Kobayashi vs. Chestnut '07: Not a match. Struggle!!

So, things are starting to look crazy for the July 4, 2007 Nathan's Hot Dog Eating Contest...

Joey Chestnut, 22yo from San Jose, plowed through 59.5 hot dogs last week in the regional qualifier, smashing Kobayashi's previous world record of 53.75. I dunno if Kobayashi can challenge that, his numbers haven't been consistent in the last 6 championships after be blew everyone away in 2001. He might be too focused on his abs these days. If Chestnut is on his game, he might take the title.

Just my luck, the one time I want to watch it, I'll be away from TV.

Chestnut is a mammoth...

His handwork is amazing... the stuff is already compacted before it hits his mouth.

I didn't know the contest was going to be televised. What channel is airing it? I love watching this kinda stuff. My favorite is the jalapeno pepper eating contests. Everyone's faces get bright red and they all cry like babies! Awesome.

Don't they show it on one of the ESPNs?

I think they have been showing them on normal ESPN ever since Kobayashi's breakout year.

Six-time defending champion Takeru Kobayashi, still unable to open his mouth wide enough for a typical teeth cleaning, joined favorite Joey Chestnut at a Tuesday weigh-in before their Fourth of July hot-dog-eating showdown in Coney Island.

The Japanese title holder declared himself ready to gorge, dismissing suggestions by skeptics that his stiff jaw was nothing more than hot dog head games aimed at rattling world record holder Chestnut.

"I don't care what they think," the 29-year-old said through an interpreter. "I just want to battle tomorrow."

Since going public with his ailment last month, Kobayashi underwent treatment by a specialist and a chiropractor. Event organizers said he also had a wisdom tooth extracted June 26 to relieve what they described as "jaw-thritis."

The slender Kobayashi weighed in at 154 pounds. Chestnut, 23, came in at 215 pounds and added his voice to those unsure what to expect from the champion. "Kobayashi is the underdog," he said, "and he's claiming an illness."

The two are among 17 contestants preparing for Wednesday's eat-off, where the winner must consume the most HDBs -- hot dogs and buns. Last month, Chestnut eclipsed Kobayashi's mark of 531/2 in 12 minutes by inhaling 591/2.

Urged by photographers to open wide on Tuesday, Kobayashi displayed less than a full range of mandible motion.

That could be good news for Chestnut, who's favored to end Kobayashi's record run as holder of the mustard yellow belt presented each Fourth of July outside Nathan's Famous. Mayor Michael Bloomberg introduced the pair before they stepped on the scales and engaged in a staredown at City Hall Park.

"Many times ... in the annals of sports, the eyes of the world have turned to our great city to watch worthy adversaries square off," said Bloomberg, tongue in cheek. "What comes to mind is Ali and Frazier, the Yankees and the Mets, the Post and the Daily News."

These guys are flying. A third of the way done, Chestnut 35, Kobayashi 30.

Halfway done, Chestnut 43, Kobayashi 41, he's catching up.

Nathans record is like 53 and change, overall record is like 59 and 1/2.

So at 4 minutes left, Chestnut at 51, Kobayashi 49. For comparison, 3rd place is a steady 10+ dogs behind now.

It was entertaining to watch. Now the new record is 66. How Chestnut got 66 is beyond me.

Looks like Chestnut's gonna be on the media circuit for the rest of the week. Congrats to him on winning and breaking his own record. As for Kobayashi, well........

It is all about the endurance. Much like the sub-4 minute mile. These guys eat about 13 hot dogs a minute in the early going, but in the final minute they could barely get 3 in. Imagine even 10 a minute for the whole run :emb: 120 hot dogs.

I dunno how to feel... this is probably the best part of the 4th of July weekend, and I couldn't see the damn thing because there's no ESPN in Karlovy Vary. I enjoyed reading the play-by-play here, I also read the short AP article.

Holy hell, 66-63??? They both beat the previous records, the both drove each other to the next level, they... they fought --err--- ate like warrior-poets.

How many did Kobayashi actually eat before the barf (reversal of fortune)? I feel like throwing up after watching it. For christ sake, those guys did drills all year, of all the foods they ate and practiced each time, they could feed the entire village in Africa.
