After all these years, I picked Mario 64 back up and I'll say this: The game's still got it. I played this shit super late last night. Just get one more star. Just get one more star. The game's very addicting. I've decided to try for all 120 again. Man, it's going to be a bitch, but will be a blast the whole way through!
Its one of the few 3D games from the N64/PSX/Saturn generation that still hold up today. There was alot of 3D drek back then/
Truly a classic.

Yeah I have this on my Wii and its still a blast.

Definitely one of my Top 10 favorites of all time! This game is an absolute classic and I find it surprising that people see is as being overrated, but I suppose that is an inevitability with anything that is highly praised by the majority of the population. You can't be overrated without being highly rated in the first place :)
I still remember trecking down via BART from Cal 10 years ago to pick up my N64 and Mario, bringing it back to the dorm room and having everyone get drunk and party around it. A timeless experience that's still great to this day. This is was the first series that I remember having a good transition to 3D; the first one to have a decent working camera (one that people still can't get right today). It was a Mario game with replay value, classic enemies, a variety of moves that weren't too overwhelming, and a genuine fun factor.
The only reason to keep my N64 around!

i think nintendo got lucky with this one - the n64 controller suited the game perfectly - had that not been the case, the game probably wouldnt have done as well.
id like to know how i compares using the wii controller.

There is nothing to flaw about the game it is amazing, Who needs a ps3 when the 64 can produce this stuff.
the game was a showcase for the N64 so luck had nothing to do with it. now if they used a different style controller they would have tailored the game to that instead.Quote:

Back when it first came out, the sheer freedom of movement that was possible in Mario 64 was mindblowing to me.
I remember waiting excitedly at a demo kiosk to try it out. There was this dumb kid in front of me who (I'm not joking) repeatedly said something like "Andalé, Mario!" and then bashed the N64 controller into the metal holster, snapping off the analog stick.

Dude, only one game on your list was an actual platformer. The rest are a completely different genre. You can compare Zupapa and NitD to them, but certainly not the Marios.

It's an OK, game. Excellent moves, and excellent control.
However, repeating the same level over and over, it's just not my cup of tea. I won't say it's a bad game either, cause I do know a lot of people like it. It's just that aspect that turns me off (same for sunshine).
Agreed, great game, especially when I was a kid, the only semi challenging part to my adult self is the last level though. Not trying to sound macho or anything, it'd just be a perfect game if it had a Yoshi's Island style easy completion/challenging to play for score type balance.Quote:

Super Mario 64 invented a genre and still hasn't been matched, not even by Miyamoto himself. Super Mario Sunshine, all the bullshit 3D Rare collect-a-thon Mario 64 clones...they're all dull as hell.
I really think the only other house to put out decent platformers since 1995 have been Naughty Dog. The first three Crash Bandicoot titles were all actually quite good, whatever problems you might have with the art style. Jak N Daxter (the first Jak title) was also really good.
Insomniac's Ratchet and Clank was actually almost more of a Mega Man title by way of Mario 64, with its emphasis on the gunplay and continually bigger and badder weapons.
It seems to be a dead genre now that few developers seem willing to touch, since it was cloned for so long by so many would-be contenders there just isn't much room to groom, as what happened with fighting games.
I wish first-person shooters would die a similar death, ha.
As for New SMB, eh...I had fun when I first played it, but it just didn't have that staying power the way the vintage Mario titles did. The level designs just aren't anywhere near as imaginative, nor are the power-ups. Shell suit? Fucking boring.

Mario is just one of those games that I enjoy in 2-D form more then 3-D.
BTW: Mario Sunshine would have been a fun game had it not had Mario in the title. Neat idea, but not for a Mario game.

There's pretty much never been a Mario game I didn't like. That goes for Sunshine, too. But to say NSMB is better than 64 is insane. The game was fine and all, but it was SO DAMN EASY. I mean super duper easy.
for me, the best mario game ever is yoshi's island. Maybe a tad easy, but really really really awesome.
Last saturday I was playing it in my little 14 year old cousin's modded xbox and he was like "holy shit! what is THAT?"
All his family have been addicted to it since then. Definetly yoshi's island got it.
And sonic... it's strange coz sonic is kinda "slower" than his 2D counterpart but a whole lot more unplayable. If the same effort that goes for OutRun/VF went to a new sonic game...
Look at mario: A game every 4 years or so and always at least, nice. Sonic is a yearly rushed dissapointment. So much hope in Sonic 360 just to discover the worst sonic game ever. Lot's of faults that could be adressed just with ANY betatesting. What happened with the day/night changes in real time? They aren't used but the game still calculates all shadows in real time hitting performance. And what's up with the gazillion endless loading screens?
Luckily The Secret Rings was kinda nice and that "Mario & Sonic at the olympics" being supervised by miyamoto himself makes me hope that sega could learn a bit. Or better yet, a monumental platform game with Mario AND Sonic. I'm kinda certain that miyamoto have thought of something like that at some point since the genesis days
Sonic should stop being that green eyed fashion victim and return to his good old dark-eyed, shorter, fatter, self and stop kissing final fantasy characters

What an awesome, immersive experience.
Whoever was on about the camera being great was spot on. I thought all 3D platformers would be like that and I was sorely mistaken. Even today the frustration of the camera angle getting botched up with cutting planes is annoying, deadly and too frequent.
Some say the graphics are simplistic, well what does one expect from a Mario title? The looks of the game have aged quite well and its still a badass game today.
