Everyone is going to try and bash one or the other, but the truth as to which is better is really in the eye of the beholder. I grew up playing the Genesis and I still enjoy it to this day.
The SNES is fun too, I just prefer the Genesis.
SNES! never owned a genesis so im a little biased. i did have some experience with it when i was a kid but i still always preferred the SNES, still have my original console!
one memory i had was that my buddy had a genesis, and i remember playing MK1, and it had the infamous blood code and the better fatalities, so with that game at least it was better, the only gripe i had with it was the shitty graphics, the SNES was superior (closer to arcade) in that respect but lacked in other areas.
SNES for me.
I was genesis all the way. Never had a nintendo system until I got a gamecube. I loved playing all the sonic games. Thought they were alot more fun than mario.
Back in them days I had a Genesis but I always wanted a SNES because the graphics and sound was better(and it had SFII). But when I look back, I enjoyed the living shit out of my Genesis and I'm glad I had one instead of a SNES or else i'd have missed out on some hot games.
I love them both though.
Shinobi III is probably the best non neo 16 bit game ever, so...
in hindsight they are almost equal for me - with a slight edge to SNES.
back in the day I never fully appreciated MD - we got an MD and after about a year dumped it for a Snes & never looked back (until recently).
Genesis b/c I was not into RPGs back then, sports games were more fun (multiplayer) in college (until Super Bomberman came along and changed all that).
Why pick? They were both excellent.
When I was a kid, I preferred SNES, but also had a Genesis. I only ever had a few games for the Genny though. Around the time when I turned 16, Genesis really started to grow on me. So, as a child: SNES, as an older child: Genesis.
I liked them both equaly, but the TG-16 was still my fav of that era.
I tried to get into the Genesis by borrowing my buddy’s from time to time and catching up on titles but I loved the SNES more. Here are some of the SNES exclusive titles that were seriously kick ass (in my opinion, all of these are still worth owning today...):
Final Fantasy II and III
Secret of Mana/Chrono Trigger/Secret of Evermore
Super Metroid
Zelda LttP
Donkey Kong Country series
Super Castlevania IV
Legend of the Mystical Ninja
F-Zero
Axelay
Actraiser 1 and 2
Super Mario World/All-Stars/Kart
Super Punch Out
Ninja Gaiden Trilogy
Breath of Fire 1&2
Earthbound
Lufia 1&2
Mega Man titles
R-Type titles
A great port of Simcity
Starfox
Super Mario RPG
Super Mario World
Contra III
Add to that superior ports of Street Fighter II and Mortal Kombat II (not MK I…thanks Ninntendo!) and you have a seriously kick ass system. I know the Genesis has some great titles but up against the likes of Zelda LttP, Final Fantasy II&II (possibly two of the best RPG’s ever created), Super Mario RPG, Earthbound and Super Metroid…I don’t think that the Genesis had a chance overall.

A pretty crazy thread that discussed the same thing. There are others too that go way back to 2004, but that was the most recent one.
Anyway, SNES for me all the way. I agree 100% with Loopz, who I'm sure will weigh in. The SNES had the most amazing library, PERIOD. Genesis had its fair share of hits, but the number of AAA titles on SNES is mind-boggling.
SNES. Close the thread.
But seriously, they were both awesome. Getting just one or the other would be stupid. If you HAD to... then SNES.

for RPG's, SNES...
for all else, Genny
Did you see my list?Quote:

I've been getting more out of it now that I've been getting import games from Otakon. It's nice being able to use my SNES to play Gundam Wing Endless Duel rather then my shitty Microsoft Sidewinder and ZSNES.
I'm sure both are great consoles and have great games, but I grew with the SNES, and overall, it has better games in a wide range of genres.
I'm a Genesis man and let the great debate begin once more.
Everyone prefers what they grew up with, and they both had some good exclusives. Objectively, for graphics and sound -- no contest: SNES. I also think SNES had the better overall library by a landslide, but feel free to disagree.
I wanted a SNES but my parents bought me a Megadrive for Christmas. I cried so damned hard that night (was 6 at the time) and then I stopped and played Sonic 2.
I still prefer the Snes though, despite never owning one when it was in it's prime.
Although I owned a SNES, Genesis had a little more advantage over SNES (the add-ons 32X and Sega CD). SNES for now until I get a 32X
I had both growing up so its really hard to say. Both had great games and I still have both for that reason alone.
What's the difference?
They both have great games on my xbox.
Why do we have one of these threads every few months? :make_fac:
SNES for me btw
But yea, you'd be stupid to not get both (or roms of both)
I've noticed something about the Super Nintendo and Sega Genesis.
The Sega Genesis had games that were geared towards hardcore gamers like a lot of shooters, strategy games, and rare, obscure games like Valis, El Viento, and Thunder Force.
The Super Nintendo was geared towards casual gamers. Because they have a lot of well established licenses that are were already known. Also, SNES had a shit load of licensed games like Ultraman, Dennis The Menance, Toys, and many others.
So,
Sega Genesis geared towards hardcore gamers.
SNES geared towards mainstream and casual gamers, and therefore sold more, because there are far more mainstream and casual gamers than hardcore gamers.
Is that fanboyism I smell? "Hardcore" doesn't necessarily mean it's better or funner. I'd rather play "mainstream" Zelda LttP than most the Genny had to offer.Quote:

Genny may have some games, but in some genres they could not compete. If it were more geared to the hardcore, we did not see a decent version of a fighting game (Maybe that obscure game, the name escapes my mind now), Genny rpgs were good, but the SNES ones kicked the shit out of em. FF4, FF5, FF6, Zelda LttP, Chrono Trigger, Secret of Mana, Terranigma, Star Ocean, Against Fighting Force and Phantasy Star.Quote:

alrighty so we've seen lists for games that were the shit for the snes, so whats the list for the genny? i never owned so i have no idea what was even considered the cream of the crop
im guessing sonic is on there.....
That is the biggest load of nonsense I have heard this calendar year. I mean, that is really pathetic.Quote:

That's just my opinon, not a fact. I dunno I could be wrong. I feel this way because Genesis had more rare obscure games, then, SNES did.

The Sega CD has a few (and I mean few) decent games but the 32x was an abortion. Arguing the Genesis-vs-SNES thing is fine as there is actually competition between the two…bringing in the Sega CD and 32x to this fight is like bringing your 2 retarded cousins to a boxing match just to get some pity from the other opponent and judges…
I currently have:Quote:

I’m sure there are more…possibly not "cream of the crop" but good in my book.

I love them both. I don't want to choose! Sonic for the speed and 2D goodness but then you've got mario bros still doing a fine job just without the speed. I just bought them both/. True there was a time when all gamers were "hardcore"
hey thanks for answering my question!Quote:

oh ya turtles in time and contra 3 were 2 of my favs on the SNES! so im sure i would dig the Genny incarnations. sadly i have never played streets of rage.......looks like i might have some hunting to do......Quote:

SNES:
Pros:
- large color palette
- powerful PPUs that support a number of effects
- SPC700 sound chip
- able to run along side the 23892 helper chips found in certain cartridges
Cons:
- those helpe chips made certain games very expensive
- the main CPU was woefully slow, and often times was not used and a faster CPU was supplemented in the cartridge
- SNES shells often turn yellow and become as brittle as a graham cracker
Genesis/MD:
Pros:
- Featured a very powerful 68000 CPU and Z80 CPU
- Featured an advanced PPU that would render a frame in advance and buffer it in the VRAM...AKA "Blast Procesing"
- Yamaha YM2612, a very close part to the YM2151 found in most arcade boards of the time
Cons:
- Very weak color palette
- PPUs did not support any sort of scaling or rotation effects
- Inferior sound chip to the SNES, although some praise it for delivering more arcade-like sound
The power base converter is the best Genny Add on...
Nevery mind the 32x and the CD.
My SNES carts never turned yellow, but I may have bought some used that may have colored a little.
I wonder why is that.
Don't forget to add "Sturdy, manly game cases that are second only to AES" for Genesis cons and "Flimsy ass cardboard" for SNES cons.
The SNES sound chip is very superior. Gotta thank Ken Kutaragi for that one. I still have in my mind great tunes I still listen on my winamp (Directly from the SPC dump), the sound chip was superior to many arcade chips, nd I have to say even the neo (So it may not be able to store a big pcm sample but you know what I mean)
Take Castlevania IV for as an example.
On the other hand, the genesis chip is awful. Still, I have only played the Genesis once (the real thing), as oposed to the emus, and you know how awful does the genny sound on an emu. When Zsnes emulated the Low pass filter I was very excited :tickled:
I thought the Genesis was awesome at first, but around 1993 I needed to get a SNES. Link to the Past was way too good to pass up, and back then Final Fantasy was still a good series. The nail in the coffin was Mortal Kombat II.
The games don't turn yellow, it's the systems.
I'll never forget seeing an eBay auction with a yellowed-SNES that they listed as a "RARE GOLD EDITION!!"
:lolz:
The SNES turns yellow due to UV reaction. This also happens to some toys (the original GI Joe Skystriker is one of them…if exposed to UV for years it too will yellow). Mine still looks new but has lived a sheltered life...
my system is discolored on the bottom half, my console never saw the sunlight it was always under a table or my tv stand or something...... i do have a couple of carts that are also yellowed on one side, arent they made of the same material anyways??
Well the early SNES systems used a different type of plastic from the later systems that will discolor even if it has sat in the box for 15 years. Although a newer system can still turn yellow if it sits in direct sunlight.Quote:
