AMERICA is a land of cheap traders and "cheap" minded people, but we spend money we don't have like a mutha'fucka. So at the same time that article couldn't be more wrong. *** LOL! *** If America was so cheap then we wouldn't have so many ppl in debt.

I have no interest in purchasing a console that costs more than half of a week's pay to me, especially when the quality of the product is questionable and it holds little to no advantage over its competitors.

It's just not worth it.

I know I'm saying this on a Neo-Geo message board, but I felt differently about the Neo and it offered obvious quality and advantages over its specific market. I also didn't pay $700 for my setup. I waited until I could afford it.

I'll do the same with the PS3. I'm not going to justify a blue ray player as the reason it costs $300 more. That's a $300 gamble on a format that may or may not win the format war.

I just hope the PSP support keeps coming. That's at least one thing Sony priced right and offers a real value. (I know people disagree, but you have to admit, for the price, it offers a great deal of features, intentionally or not.)

I also take serious issue with people on this board who offer the Neo as an example of why the PS3 isn't expensive. Number one, the Neo-Geo clearly outclassed its competitors at the time, all you need to do is take a look at Samurai Shodown on the various systems to understand the technical superiority involved. It didn't help the Neo penetrate the market, but you knew it was a audio/visual monster compared to the SuperNES/Genesis. PS3 offers no such quantum leap over the 360.
Number two, has a console over $500 EVER succeeded? No. Ask Trip Hawkins about that.

Had they not married the PS3 to Blu-Ray, installed a standard DVD drive and offered the machine at $200 less, and also offered something interesting, say PSP game playback on your television, they may have had a shot. As such, the only people really buying them are folks who want a cheap Blu-Ray player. MS can release a Blu-Ray drive separately and instantly kill that advantage. They simply pursued a smarter business model, eschewing the grand dream of the "all-in-one" box for something that doesn't obliterate your wallet.

Is that the continued sound of falling Sony exclusives in the forest?
I couldn't hear it over the deafening quiet apathy of the Europeans towards this thing. Nah, maybe it was the roar of Japanese consumers buying four Wiis for every PS3 sold. Who knows.

We are cheap, look at all the bulk item stores, the rise of ebay, Wal-Mart...We're about getting more for less. And the majority of that stuff is cheaply made to boot because people will buy anything, many don't grasp the concept of "you get what you pay for."

That alienation stems from the fact that they're arrogant from winning.

Sony has a major superiority complex. That comes from:

Being a Japanese company
Being a Market Leader for 2 straight generations
Throwing insane amounts of money around for RnD
The Corporate culture of having engineers running the ship

If they were smart, they'd be trying to convince people that it's a good buy and really espousing on those features.

Sony, in it's ivory tower and "think tank" based exec team, thinks it knows better than *you* what *you* want. It's a typical response from tech design teams and companies... they're convinced they're smarter than you are and are offended if you don't agree.

(Can you tell I support engineering teams for a living?)

The Wii is winning, the X360 is a quality product and the PS3 walks arrogantly and headfirst into oncoming traffic.

No one wins 3 times. It's not because of culture, it's because it motivates the competition to destroy you.

Sony bet the farm on the PS3, PSP and Blu-Ray.. this is just the first time they're visibly sweating and it rules.

I find it humorous that Americans are seen as cheap.

Would I say that we're a more discerning buying public than say, Japan? Oh, absolutely.

The economy isn't so great over here, the cost of living is going up and large corporations are really losing touch with regards to digital multimedia and the public at large. Sony is one of the faces of that. The more they push, the more defiant we as americans tend to get. It's in the blood.

Americans as a whole tend to be very skeptical, defiant and careful when the economy is down.

They need to realize they fucked up with the launch and try to correct it. Take another $200 off the top and then we'll talk.
