I was all jazzed up to contribute to this thread before I knew I had to watch a video.
What happened to regular old-fashioned internet journalism?
The Simpsons placing at 2? Fuck that.
No X-Men :oh_no:

well not now at least.
Someone post the list so we don't have to watch it.
10. Batman Returns (SNES)
9. Golden Axe
8. Battletoads
7. Streets of Rage 2
6. River City Ransom
5. Guardian Heroes
4. Final Fight
3. Double Dragon
2. The Simpsons
1. TMNT IV: Turtles In Time
Some good selections, but a couple oddball ones (Simpsons and Batman Returns? wtf?).

Streets of Rage (both 1&2…1 didn’t make the list)
Turtles (VI and the Arcade game which did not make the list)
Final Fight
River City Ransom
Double Dragon (The arcade game should have made the list BEFORE the NES version)
But Golden axe? Batman Returns? The Simpson’s?
I go teh romz of the Simpson’s and really, it wasn’t all that great. Golden Axe is not that great either…And Battletoads…
Aaaaarg…
Battletoads is simply too frustrating to play. I don’t care what they say, if a game is that hard, it’s simply not fun after a while. Besides, Battletoads on the SNES is everything the NES version was but much better looking…it should have made the list.
Batman Returns is mediocre at best. No where near a top ten spot.
That list is garbage.
Were you in the "great beat-em ups" thread a while back? If you were, you'd see Simpsons, Final Fight, SOR2, and Battle Toads in there. Hell, Turtles in Time is a great game, too. What shocks me is the lack of X-men, for one. Yes, Batman makes me scratch my head. Also, replace "double dragon" with SUPER double dragon. It's a tough list to make, but some great games ARE on there.Quote:

Okay I call Shenanigans.
No X-men, no Avengers and no AvP.
i'm personally wondering about cadillacs and dinosaurs. and why i'm not seeing it.
lists are always debatable.
I enjoyed this, but if i had to think about the ranks, it would piss me off.
SoR2 shoulda been way higher...
Simpsons is simple, but fucking awesome. Battletoads? That game is the shit. One of my all time favs. I don't understand. Any list made by ANY one will always be shit on.Quote:

The Simpsons, on its release was great. I think it's main "innovation" was the fact that two players could combine their characters and do different special moves (depending on the combination.)
Batman Returns (SNES) was great at the time, the controls were good and there were different ways to "throw" people. I was impressed by it on release. Although I think I would have preferred the original Sonic Blast Man to Batman Returns. :P
Golden Axe (arcade) made a big impact at its time. I remember going into an arcade that just got the game and seeing a crowd surrounding a machine that was yelling... The graphics were great, the different characters, being able to attack someone that's behind you (Dwarf would roll back and jut out his axe, etc), the varying levels of magic and the death cries of slain people... I'm not sure if there ever was a true home conversion that incorporated all of its aspects.
That said, beat-em-ups have evolved since their time... ;)
Yeah, Golden Axe belongs into the list.
SoR2 and Simpsons should change places, other than that the list looks okay but of course is incomplete, there are some more great bmu's that should be in it.

No spikeout in the top ten
one of the best beat em up !
No AVP, no Warriors of Fate.
No shirt, no shoes...NO DICE.
They showed X-Men at the beginning, but it didn't make the list. WTF man!!!
Very true. People who didn't get to play the Simpsons in the arcade back in the early 90s have no say in this matter. The game was incredible back then.Quote:

If Streets of Rage isn't at the top of the list then that list is basically invalid and obselete.
Fact not opinion.
wheres the Punisher?????
X-men wasnt that great compared to other Konami beat em ups (Simpsons and TMNT IV).
You have the same basic enemy throughout the same game with no variation, not much of a combo system to speak of.
The only thing it REALLY had going for it other than being X-Men, was the 6 player cab.
Ive owned it, I like it, but I dont think it really belongs in a top 10 list.
My fucking list is best:
1. Double Dragon (arcade)
2. Final Fight (arcade)
3. Streets of Rage 2
4. Golden Axe (arcade)
5. Guardian Heroes
6. TMNT (arcade)
7. Aliens Vs. Predator (arcade)
8. D&D: Tower of Doom (arcade)
9. X-Men
10. River City Ransom
What is with this forum's love for Super Double Dragon, is this love through nostalgia alone or have you guys played it recently?
It tries so hard to be Streets of Rage and falls flat on its face.
It falls a fist flat on YOUR face.Quote:

Sorry.
why is Battletoads always considered a beat-em-up? I mean, you've got platforming elements and those retarded racing stages... it's not what I think of when I hear the term beat-em-up.
As for the list, nobody's going to agree with it, that's what always happens with Top XX lists.
It's a decent list. I like River City Ransom, but I don't think it should be on the list. Same with Batman.
I have fond childhood memories of the Simpsons arcade game. Fun stuff. The cade I work at now has it. I'd probably put it in the 10th spot though.
Altered Beast, Spider Man, X-Men and the Avengers should be on the list.
I love beat 'em ups. :emb:
EDIT: Never in all my arcade going experiences have I encountered one of these: http://cgi.ebay.com/X-Men-6-Player-A...QQcmdZViewItem
I will say AvsP and X-men deserve to be on that list.Quote:

Ran into those quite a few times in the arcade hey-days here in Vegas. Lots of fun when the machine is full. I think the last time I saw one was when Gameland Arcade closed (ask most of the Vegas folk about that; I think all of us were there for it).Quote:

I remember when the original TMNT 4-player came out (I was in Vegas when I saw it at one of the old, legendary arcades at Circus Circus), it was a "moment" in my video game memory.
The Simpsons was the continuation of that tradition.
*sigh*
Kids... :oh_no:
That makes them good for threads.Quote:

Aw man, you know what people never mention when talking about greatest beat em ups but should?
The arcade Battletoads.
That game was the shit, pretty sure the Dark Queen was responsible for one of my first boners: http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedi.../DarkQueen.png
That NEEDS to come to Xbox arcade.
One of my favorites when I was a kid was also the Spider-Man arcade game, loved it, never a dull moment. Remember when Eddie Brock turned into Venom and broke out of that glass case thing?
A coupla years ago I had the chance to play it again, and I will admit, it definitely didn't age well....sucks growing up and finding out some things you loved as a kid just didn't hold up.
No Warriors of Fate either? :oh_no:
Rushing Beat Ishura
i see i'm the only one who cares about cadillacs and dinosaurs i see how it is
and i remember playing TMNT in the back of a pizza hut standing on a chair at the age of 4 while my friend's brother gave us quarters. it's one of my moments in gaming.
I need to check this game out now, everyone who played it seems to like it. I didn't even know something like this existed. :)Quote:

I have the Punisher JAMMA, I played it, but I just found it too shallow.
Nah, Cadillacs was an awesome game. Lots of items and weapons to tool around with and an overall fun game to play.Quote:

I've never had the pleasure to play Cadillac or Punisher.
Capcom shoulda made a sequel to Captain Commando. Good game that coulda been great had the sprites been larger and more detailed.
For the double dragon contoroversy...
1. Play the first two levels of doubledragon on the NES.
2. Play the first few levels of Doubledragon on a PCB.
Now tell me what is the more enjoyable experiance....
If you say PCB, then you are either blinded by nostalagia or a fucking liar.
I really can't believe they put Batman Returns for the SNES on there but not X-Men or Aliens vs. Predator.
And anyone who thinks the Simpsons isn't a great beat'em up is a communist. There, I said it.
Captain American and the Avengers would definitely be on my top 10.
"THANK YOU, QUICKSILVER!"
