I wanted to create this thread in order to have one place where people can discuss or ask about PC/Mac software and hardware.
I've been tossing around the idea of switching entirely to a Mac lately. I've got a Dell laptop ATM and I don't like it at all. My Powerbook G3 is old and chokes on OSX 10.4 (have 10.3 installed currently).
I'd buy a mac if I could afford one. Until then, hackintosh for me. Besides, my octuple-boot (XP-OSX-Gentoo-Solaris-FreeDOS-FeeeBSD-BeOS-OS2) makes me a geek demigod.

I just finalized a deal on a macbook pro. I'm rather excited to get my greasy hands on it. I was looking for a good, stable system to do image and video editing on and... after a couple months of poking around I decided to go with a mac. The first apple I've owned since the IIc. I've been building my own gaming PCs and regular desktops for the better part of 12 years. Hell, it's even my job. But I decided to push past all the mc hate that windows users have and give it a try. Hope I enjoy it as much as I expect. Plus, they are so damn pretty.

I'd like a cheap Macbook, but the fact they dropped Mobility Radeons and replaced them with intergrated Intel GMA graphics is keeping me from buying one.

When XP was first released, we wanted to see what minimal hardware was needed to run it. The lowest we could go was:
CPU: Pentium 1 @ 60 MHz (486 would post an error)
RAM: 64 MB
HD: 2.5 GB
Video Card: Cirrus Logic GDX### 2 MB VRAM
I remember it took ~15 minutes to fully load the operating system. If you tried to open a window, that was another 5 minutes loading and drawing the shadows and smooth fonts and borders. The days of being bored at work...

Service pack 2 is what chokes most older machines.
I actually really like Vista.
There are definitely plenty of annoying things about it, and I won't buy it until SP1 comes out, but I think it's decent overall especially considering their past track record.
i used xp sp2 every day at work on my p3 1ghz with 128mb of ram.
it was slow but not unuseable.
ive upgraded it to 384mb and its much nicer.
i run win2k ase on my 233mhz p1 with 64mb ram.

Yeah Aero is a waste of resources. Expose in OS X has some real uses, I use it every day, whereas the neat little card flippy cascade thing isn't anywhere near as useful.Quote:
