Hell, I've had my Mac for over 6 years and it's still running strong on even the newest Mac OSX. Never had a problem with it and still us it to this day.

Why would someone buy a lower powered Mac for almost double the price of a blazing fast Windows PC?

Has nothing to do with hardware advancement... just reliability, speed, (they remain faster than most PC's that are 2 or 3 years newer...) and overall build quality...

there arent nearly as many new products in the mac world (no shit) vs the pc world which explains how they can hold their value for so long.

the pc product cycle is 3-6months. the apple cycle seems more like 12-18months.

not to mention pc parts are just more mass produced in general which also decreases resale value.


couple that with the fact that a lot of people who buy macs are willing to pay higher prices.


ill take a pc over a mac any day. just more shit you can do.

There is nothing wrong with Macs (as long as you stick to mainstrream software and don't want to play games), but their ability to hold their value has absolutely nothing to do with their performance compared to a PC. In three years, a 2.0GHz Core 2 Duo based Mac will be just as slow as a 2.0GHz Core 2 Duo based PC.

Buying an apple because one can sell it at a lesser loss is like buying a BMW over a Honda.

Using a Mac let's you do everything you can do on a PC or *nix box easier, cheaper, and in half the time.

So you only have to trudge through Windows when it's absolutely necessary as opposed to all the time. Fortunately, once most people have switched and made the adjustment, they realize they really don't need Windows at all.

After building my own PCs for years and laughing at Mac users, I bought a Power Mac about a year and a half ago instead of building another PC. Best move I ever made. My computer has ceased being a hobby and is now a useful tool for accomplishing tasks.

Don't blame PC just because you are obsessed with tweaking, modding and upgrading them.

I build all my PCs, I leave them on for weeks at a time, very stable, does everything I throw at them and I hardly ever "work" on them. In fact, the HTPC I built makes my life so much more enjoyable since I can watch all the TV shows I ever want, act as a home/music server and play the occasional game/emu.

most annoying thing is when you click to open a program and its loading, its loading, and nothing.

i have no problems with windows so i see no reason to switch.

Got the CPU upgrade for $109 and the video card for $56. Both used on eBay.

This was close to 2 years ago, so G4 Powermacs running around 1Ghz were still selling for $800-$1000.

It still runs fine on 90% of the tinkerings I do, but the urge to get a dual-core builds daily. Sucks the new dual-core towers start at $2500.

I got this from this Vista review - it's actually pretty interesting to read.

On OSX, I have MSN, Safari, Mail, Excel, Word, Photoshop CS2 and iCal running at the same time, most of the time, and I have no speed/memory issues at all.

i dont have osx installed to compare it to xp's performance on the same computer.

in windows im typically running opera, aim, media player, and a game (typically wow) with no problem. aim tends to be a memory hog if you leave your ims open for days though.

i have used vista RC2, and it seemed the same as xp. possibly a little slower due to lack of driver support for some things.

Okay, I will.

A Mac has, preinstalled and at no additional cost, iLife as well as pdf document creation and editing.

I'll list each app plus its PC equivalent.

iDVD = Basic Roxio program ($50)
iMovie = Adobe Premiere Elements ($100)
iWeb = Some shareware WYSIWYG app ($25-60)
Garageband = Sony ACID Pro ($90+)

PDF Doc Creation and Editing = Adobe Acrobat ($250+, or at least 7 other individual open-source and shareware apps to get the same features one by one)


So, a Core 2 MacBook at $1050 with all of this seamlessly built in, versus a $999 Core 2 Dell plus $515 worth of additional software. You tell me.
