Does such a thing exist?
I had on the re-mastered version tonight as background noise while I did some work around my room, and I realized that I absolutely HATE the new dub. At first I felt it was okay, but after some time, and now that I've spent nearly the entire movie reciting lines from the original dub in place of the new one, I'd really like a version of it on DVD so I don't have to dig out a VCR or Laserdisc everytime I want to see/hear it.

your best bet is to buy the bootlegs from the criterion collection laserdisc. although, theyre near impossible to find, they have pretty good picture quality.

Im sure there are DVD copies around somewhere. Ill keep an eye out.

even though the new dub obviously follows the original script more faithfully, i cannot help preferring the old dub over the new one.
it's the version i watched the most as a kid, and those voices became one with the characters back then... i always liked kaneda's ninja turtle voice :D
i have the old VHS and the new DVD tin collectors thing-a-ma-bob. my only real complaint about the new version is the pronunciation of Kaneda. sounds way too much like Canada.

The original Akira dub was basically my introduction into anime and in time I've actually come to somewhat prefer it over the Japanese spoken version.
It's also one of the reasons I've never seen the new dub and don't have any intention to do so even though I'm a fairly rabid Akira fan.
(It's also one of the few VHS tapes that's going to be left in my collection during my total upgrading to DVD.)

I prefer the original dub over the new dub, BUT I liked that the 3 freaky kids sounded like kids in the new version. The sub version is still better than both though.
I really wish I didn't leave my VHS of the dub at home. My roommates and I don't even have a VHS player here in Dallas but I still miss the thing.
The UK version of Akira The Ultimate Collection has the Remastered version 16:9 with the new dub and Japanese language but also has a second disk which has the original Non-remastered 4:3 version with the classic dub!

Tbh like all anime i don't think the original japanese voice can be bettered, but the original dub has some classic lines!

I don't understand how you all think the new dub tells the story better.
It doesn't.
The dialogues almost don't even make SENSE, not to mention the barely bothered to really notice how long a given character's mouth is moving.
For example, when Masaro appears to Takashi on the freeway. The original dub he says "You know we aren't meant to exist in the outside world...come on...lets go home." Matches the movement and time that his mouth is moving. In the new dub, he says something not only less interesting, but theres more words to it, so much so that during the pauses, his voice is talking. Poor poor poor.
Not to mention his new voice SUCKS. I know they're all children, but his original voice fits his appearance so much better.

and the original dub was super. one of my gripes about the new version.
i have two copies of the original.

You could theoretically rip the remastered dvd, apply the original dub from the second disk, and burn it to a region free DVD.
That would be the best option. The remastered version (from my Pioneer DVD, dunno if it'd different from the UK release) looks really nice, it makes it hard to watch the VHS.Quote:

The first and last time I saw Akira was in 6th grade. I wasn't old enough to really appreciate it, as I was mainly interested in only the opening and ending scenes (which had the most action, iirc).
I think one of these days I'll have to rent it again.

I just watched the original dub of Akira. I've seen both dubs. I personally like the old dub over the new one, because I like Kaneda's "punk" voice, and I like the Marlon Brando voice for the fat kid. I just thought that there was more originality in the original dub than in the new one.
Johny Yong Bosch's portrayal of Kaneda is certainly very different to that of the original Streamline dub. The 'vunerability' that seems to be a trademark of all Bosch's voicework definately throws everything into a new light, making Kaneda seem more caring and concerned for his fellow bikers, but it does take some of the raw 'edge' off of the film when the lead character seems that much more sympathetic.Quote:

The voice acting in the new Pioneer/Geneon dub has a very "modern anime" feel to it and to be honest seems to make more sense - word for word - during conversations. Even though the original can be a bit silly, it has lots of nostalgia and just sounds right to most English speaking fans that heard the original dub so many times. Yup, quite a few in fact. Myself and all of my friends that watch anime always go with the dub whenever possible. Nothing against the original Japanese actors of course, its just a more relaxing and enjoyable experience for us to watch the 'toons in our native language.Quote:
