Anyway, it's one of the films I'd been looking forward to for a while now and I finally got to see it last night and it did not disappoint in the slightest.

Visually beautiful yet equally disturbing as well.

Basically an adult-oriented fairy tale that works on every level.

It hits theaters with a wide release on the 29th, but if you're not above using torrents (not my favorite method, but I used it here), then you can track it down online and catch it before it opens in the US.

Either way, I'd suggest seeing it.

I saw the trailer a while ago, looks great. I'll wait until it arrives in theaters because (1) this looks like it takes advantage of the medium and (2) piracy sux0rz.

I was lucky enough to see a screening a few months ago of this rich and engaging picture. It's as every bit fantastic as you might think.

Looks really badass, can't wait to see it.

I got myself a copy of it too. I watched like... 20 minutes of it and decided that the quality was sub par and that I'd wait for the US theatrical release to really watch it. I've been looking forward to it for months. While you wait you can check out the Devils' Backbone. Another wonderful flick from del Toro.

Not that I like brag about this kind of thing, but the one I found online was of quite respectable quality; image, sound and even sub-wise.

Of course, I will be checking this out in the theaters as well and will also be making a DVD purchase when it becomes available, so I guess that eases my conscious a little for supporting piracy on some level.

Looking forward to it. And he won my respect after Devil's Backbone.

Has anyone seen this movie yet? Is it as bad ass as it looks?

I just heard about the movie the other day and it definitely sparked my interest.

I saw it the other night. Great cinematography, love the concept, but overall, it's a B movie.

Awesome movie. I have the DVD screener, but it's in Spanish with English subs.

It's wonderful. The cinematography and character designs are amazing. Though, I'd warn you. It is considerably more violent then one might expect. I think it adds more than it detracts in the long run. It, Tideland, and The Fountain were the movies that topped my must see chart for last year.

it was definitely more violent than I expected. The juxtaposition between a children fairy tale and the reality of guerrilla warfare and torture was kind of unsettling. But the cinematography and character designs do make the movie worth seeing.

you should d/l Gilliam's Tideland uncle C. It'd be worth a watch.

The movie was all about this, contrast, and how you could see the same events happening in two completely different/opposite settings.

Thanks for the heads up. I've been on a downloading binge lately so it's good to have more stuff on my list.

I thought it was great. It wasn't what I was expecting, but still awesome. I still think Devil's Backbone is his best film though.

Opens in Baltimore tomorrow and I will most likely head out to see it.

Going to see it this weekend, now that it finally reached the fringes of civilized America. Looks like the sort of movie that's worth seeing in a cinema.

Be fun to compare to his compatriot's English movie, Children of Men --he visited the set of the latter while filming Pan's Labyrinth.

Yikes, I heard that was a travesty of terrible film making.

I'm a Gilliam fanboy I guess. It's certainly worth a watch in my opinion, even if you don't own it. There are some... uncomfortable scenes that I was rather surprised at. But I'd by no means say it was horrible film making. It's better than 95% of the crap that is churned out for the mass market. I would be interested to find out what peoples gripes were though. I know my roommate didn't like it much either.

hopefully I can see it this weekend, but it's only in one theatre (that I know of) around here so hopefully I can get there when it's showing. Tomorrow it's only showings are 2:00 and 4:30 in the afternoon.....wtf, hopefully that's not the case for Saturday or Sunday. I'll have to look into it.

I saw it today (movies at 11 a.m are only 4 bucks:buttrock: ) and I thought it was very good. I will say this though, when you're trying to sell this movie to your friend, don't use "Yeah, he's the director of Mimic and Hellboy:make_fac: ."



Here's an ending spoiler. I'd be interested in what some of the people who have seen the movie's input.






One aspect I loved about it is the contrast of the two conflict facing Pan. When you think about it, the movie would not be as good as it was without both aspect in Pan's life, but they come together to make a marvelous movie. My only criticism is the ending. I felt like the movie had all the components of a movie that'll shine throughout history, except the ending. While I don't dislike the ending (and no, I would not of liked the movie any better if they left it at the Shakespearean tragedy like we first thought, I just feel that if the ending was as good as the rest of the movie, it would of elevated this movie to a classic.

Overall, I really enjoyed the movie and I will probably see it again (along with Children of Men, which I'm surprised didn't get more praise here. I thought it was exceptional.)

i wish i'd decided to go see letters from iwo jima instead of pan's labyrinth.

i was not impressed. some of it was cool looking, but the movie kinda sucked. sorry.

great film. That monster thing with the the eyes in his hands was creepy.

Saw it last Saturday...and loved it. Unfortunatly the fucktard rolling the film must have forgotten his Bi-focals(felt a little jipped with all the blurring). The violence was pretty brutal compared to what I thought I was in for, not for the squeamish. I liked the ending, a Shakspearian tragedy/double crossed imagination would have been an interesting twist, but it still left me with a small lump in my throat.

I saw it last night. It was very good, but a lot heavier than I was expecting. The violent parts were pretty disturbing, too.

No prob. My g/f and I are more or less boycotting the Uptown until they fix the gd seats (I'm more ambivalent, but she hates those seats and I can't really blame her since it would get zero business in LA in the condition they have it). We're going to catch it once it moves to any other theater.

I saw it tonight, and I agree with you 100% about the Uptown. Those seats are very uncomfortable, I'm only 5'7" and I felt cramped, I can only imagine how uncomfortable it would be for someone taller. I don't see myself seeing any other movies there anytime soon, although the preview for "The Host" looked really fucking cool, but I could just try to rent/buy it as soon as I can find it.

But great movie, definitely worth seeing once it gets a bigger release. I would see it again.

I agree with the above statements that it wasn't what I expected. But I really kinda liked the mix of both fantasy and reality. It kinda lets you look at the story from both a fantasy-like point of view, and a more realistic point of view. I will definitely buy this movie on DVD, especially if there are extras on it.

.....to be honest though I really wish that there was more of that paleface guy in the movie (guy with eyes in his hands) Really creepy and interesting character.

Spanish fairy tale with no point but it was a great looking movie. Story line needed some work. Not to mention there wasnt really a connection between the two alternating story lines. Kinda gay.

It really felt like a mix between Alice in wonderland and silent hill.

Now this movie has gotten GLOWING reviews, and I was going into it expecting dark fantasy, but this movie is fucking sad, sad, SAD.

Maybe it's just the fact that I am generally bothered by movies where terrible things and tragedy happen to children.

I honestly didn't enjoy this movie. I thought there would be FAR more fantasy and far less real world melodrama going on.

The scene with the cannibal monster was awesome, and very memorable. But other than that scene I don't think I ever wanna see this movie again.

That monster wasn't even all that cool looking, could have been though.

The fantasy stuff was really few and far between in general...in its place was copius amounts ridiculous closeups of mutilation, purely for shock value.

Didn't like the movie at all.

i loved it. loved the bad guy. great bad guys make great movies --- and he's someone for baddies to aspire to.

The girl is so pretty and charming too. The whole movie you just want to save her. The ending pissed me off man. I won't say what happens, but it really sucked bad.

The villian was really good. Terrific. Everyone in the film was good. I still found it to be really unpleasant. Not enjoyable.

And this is coming from a person who loves horror movies and all sorts of violent shit. I love Ichi the Killer and The Devil's Rejects.

I just hate it when children are abused, lose their families, etc. in movies. It's too 'real'. I don't want to be reminded of all the bad stuff that happens to kids in real life. Why? Cause real life sucks. For a movie that's supposed to be fantasy- it was more a grim hyper-reality with some fantasy sequences thrown in.

I really was disappointed.

The movie is Spanish, it takes place in Spain and they're speaking castillian spanish.

I thought it was magnificent, it broke every stereotype about the alice and wonderland theme that I'd ever seen.

And don't pretend that the fucking monster wasn't creepy, I was on the edge of my seat.

I dont agree with the glowing reviews. In every great movie there has to be a point. There was no point to this movie. The 2 story lines didnt meet at all. The ending wasnt justified. Nothing in this movie made sense. Sure it was beautiful. But overall it just goes to show where society is headed when they totally over look the key points in what actually makes a great movie. Its ridiculous, I wouldnt recommend this movie to anybody.

Wait... what?

The point/meaning behind films aren't always objective.

Go watch something like Eraserhead and tell us its meaning.

You know what? You can't. As a matter of fact? Nobody can.

The beauty of that film (and many others) is how heavily it lends itself to constant subjective questioning.

If you're living under the assumption that a film can't be great if it doesn't follow some sort of preset list of rules with a logical train of thought starting from Point A and ending at Point B, then you're clearly lacking in film-related viewing experience.

Well, apparently your ability to delve and probe deep within the human condition and understand its most complex and inner-workings doesn't lend itself heavily to film, because, despite my thoughts on film subjectiveness above, the meaning behind Pan's Labyrinth was fairly straight-forward and easily understood.

I walked away from the film reflecting on the notion of subjective morality.

If you look at Del Toro's "The Devil's Backbone" you also see a struggle between Franco Fascists and Communist Republicans laid against the backdrop of a child's story.

Her monsters were real to her, invisible to everyone but herself. The commie republic fighters were a ghost to the fascists, but very real and visible to the rest of the village.


There was definitely a lot going on, and I thoroughly enjoyed it.

Nice merge, but the title is incorrect.
