We have been together for 5+ years and just yesterday she says for the last 3 she was depressed,
"we fight to much she tells me"
and now she wants us to have space to see if we would even plan on seriously staying with each other.
I could tell since the start of the new year that something was more wrong then usual.
Is this normal or is it curtains for our relationship?
I am seriously upset and do not know what to do.

The "she wants space" line means there is an extremely good chance there is already someone else. Not just the possibility that she wants to see what else is out there, but an actual, physical person that she's seeing right now. Maybe someone she hangs out at work with or something. On a serious note, it takes balls if you really like her but the advice to end it your self is correct.
All you have to do is reverse the situation. If you went to her and said that you need space and she stated "I think that's a great idea" or "I think we should just end this", you would more than likely be stunned. You may even question you original thinking and you for sure would feel like you didn't have the upper hand.
The only way this doesn't work is if she is already with someone else or is over you for good. (Thus, she really wants out of the relationship) And if that is the case, you don't really want to be with her anymore.

1st of all, if this is the 1st time she's told you she's been "miserable" for the past 3 years -- what the hell is up with that?! 3 years is a long time, and if you couldn't see that was the case -- either she's being a drama queen or you have been really really dense.
In any case, I have two girl friends who had boyfriends for 5 years each.
One told me she got to the point in the relationship where she didn't know if he was Mr. Right. She didn't want to hurt him, they had been dating for five years and she really cared for him, but knew the relationship had peaked out.
She dumped him in 2005. Today, she's happily married to a new guy and has a baby.
My other friend told me similar things. She dumped the BF of 5 years, also in 2005, and today is married.
Go figure.
Anyway, I agree with those who said you're lucky enough to find this out now instead of later. Based on what you told us, I'd say this relationship has a 1 in 10 chance of working out in the end.
However, I wouldn't say "YOU should end it."
Set up a quiet dinner with her -- give it time for both of you to think it out, say 2 weeks from now -- and have a loooong deep discussion about what each person wants in the future. This will let you both sleep on it. 5 years is a long time. If both partners are walking out, it deserves at least 2 mere weeks to see how things go and if this is worth salvaging. It looks bleak, but again, 5 years is a long ass time.
Communication and honesty. Tell her you guys are taking a week or 2 week break from each other, and that on (say next next Saturday night) y'all gonna get together for a dinner and see what happens
