OMFG my game gear just caught fire in my hand!!! stfu, pics now

Okay I'm sitting down playing streets of rage 2 on my game gear. The low battery light is flashing so I figure I'll make the best of it and turn up the volume and enjoy it before it kicks out on me. 3rd Level, playing that guy with the jet pack on and I hear a loud POP and the screen flashes white. I start to turn the thing over and there's a white fire inside it burning! I throw it on the floor and one of the batteries is pussing out acid and hizzing. I quick kick it into the kitchen where there's tile and out the back door.

it's still out there now.

WTF!!!! In all my life I've never seen this!!!!!

Too bad no extended warantee would have covered it this long.
The system shouldn't be too hard to find a replacement for, but the game may be a bit charred after this.

wow, yeah picture please!

Sounds more like a case of the battery blowing up that the gamegear, perhaps a freak faulty battery, or perhaps wiring fault in the gg? I have no idea, I've never headrd of anything like that happenning before - you must have been pummeling that jet-pack guy hard to make the system blow up! :lolz:

the outside of the thing looks okay but it smells disgusting. I've never smelt burning PCB and battery acid before, it's horrible. my kitchen reeks.

Sounds like you had a defective or old battery that popped open causing the acid to damage the PCB. That most likely wasn't a fire, it sounds like a short that was arcing. It looks grim for your GG :(.

WOah! Hey everyone it is my first post!

Strange becasuse I just signed in and see this..you know I was playing final fantasy 3 on gameboy I used ot play it 15 hours a day ...anyway same thing for me! Battery light then "POP, battery exploded! gameboy was fine but the battery blew up and had a small fire too. I just dumped the batteries into a can, cleaned out the game boy carefully with a towel, threw the towel in the can, put new batteries in and kept playing. Be careful of the battery acid! don't touch it , you probably know that.

I never used batteries with my Game Gear because I have an AC adaptor. Never had anything happend to my Game Gear which I still have since 1993 when I was 15 and I plan on building up a game collection one of these days. :cool:

When I was in school I used to carry spare rechargeable batteries in my pockets since I would usually go through a set a day. One of them started leaking acid when I was sitting in assembly in the gym one day. First I felt a hot spot on my thigh, then I looked down and saw that the fabric had a hole eaten in it.

Hopefully the electronics weren't damaged by the battery.

Busy. I've played perhaps one game this year that was actually made in 2006, everything else has been catch-up. :p

I've been back on the forums for a bit now, starting with the phone call I received from Bobak when the other Mods were wondering if I was even still alive. :mr_t: I just haven't been banning people left and right as I did in the old days though, so my presence hasn't been all that noticeable.
