how do we train? Well we train like MMA fighters do except we don't use any pads or mouth guards. We throw punches and kicks at each other and just man up and take it. Also we crosstrain with BJJ because its extremely popular in Brazil and my teacher is a badass from the streets of Rio so we train like Brazilians. Capoeira has no forms like TKD, Karate or Kung Fu.
However NOT every capoeira school does this. Capeoira is wierd, in the fact that despite there being 2 styles(angola & regional) every school is different than the next. Regional has colored cords(like karate belts) and Angola doesn't. However every regional organization has different color cord systems. So a Master in one org might be red whereas in another its white or even black or blue.
all capoeira schools concentrate on the cultural and musical aspect of Capoeira(if not then you take the art soul of capoeira away) but some only do that, others train with lots of flips and acrobatics to entertain tourists and others train with the combat aspect usually mixing it with Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu to cover all aspects. My class is the latter, we do alot of combat training.
Oh yeah and we don't dance around and do flips when we fight for real or when we spar. That stuff is the cultural aspect of Capoeira, and a tradition of 400 years. People seem to always wanna attack capoeira for that. If you go to the slums of brazil and pick a fight expect to get punched in the face, kicked in the ribs and then put in a submission hold all without one ounce of flashiness or dancing.
