PS3 Lines Across the Globe (Starting With NYC)

This is getting out of control. I got invited to the Sony East Coast PS3 launch party which was an RSVP event. The first 400 people in line get to enter at 9pm on Dec. 16, and can buy the PS3 at midnight. I registered myself, my girlfriend, and 2 friends, and we planned on going around 8am the morning of the 16th to get in line and wait for about 13 hours before we being let in. Anyway, I go there tonight (11/15) to do a bit of recon work to see if we need to push up our start time. Nothing could have prepared me for what I was about to see.........

At 7:30pm 11/15, the line stretched from 56th & Madison Ave. all the way down to 56th and Fifth Avenue. It then made a "L" shape and snaked down to 55th and Fifth Avenue. This was no single file line, but groups of people clumped together in metal police bins. There had to be at least 300+ people there already (out of a 400 max event). Needless to say I called my friends and said it wasn't gonna happen.

Anyway, for shits and giggles, I went down to the Union Square Circuit City (one of the stores selected to have 100 units). Got there around 8:30pm or so. Already 75 people in line that I counted. In realty, this is probably closer to 90 or 100 because of empty chairs and people who are holding spots for others. The people at the front of the line had been there for nearly 3 days.

now I consider myself a pretty hardcore gamer, and I am willing to wait for a reasonable amount in time for something I really want, but 30+ hours, no way.....

Anyway, just thought I'd share what is happening in this part of the world. Would love to hear the stories of other parts.

I was REALLY hoping to go out tomorrow afternoon and camp out for one...

As I drove to work this morning (6:00) there was nobody outside of either store...

But when I had to go get material at 9:00 there was a different story to report...

If I knew for a fact I could resale one for $1500, I'd wait 12 or so hours to get one.

Damn right. The last console launch that got me excited, especially knowing I could get one when the store opened was the dreamcast. Launches have been debacles since then.

I went past a Best Buy, Circuit City, and Target tonight.

All three have people with tents outside of them.

The Best Buy had just groups of kids in front.

The X-Box 360 was the first launch where it seemed to get problematic.

But even then people weren't waiting this early for it.

These people who are willing to wait in the rain and all that are losers. I was tempted to go past and ask them if they started playing video games with the PS2. These people aren't hardcore gamers, they are just mainstreamers who think this is cool. I wonder if any of them even have HDTVs.

I was thinking of trying to get a Wii on Sunday, but I won't get up early or wait in line for one. This shit is getting retarded. I guess I will just wait until January. With FF3, FF5, Capcom Classics Collection 2, and Castlevania: Portrait of Ruin all out by the beginning of December, I can wait.

There was a gigantic line at my local Best Buy. It's on the border of a town that, in the last 10 years, has become a very wealthy part of the city. I guess that's why there are such large lines... People had tents and everything... It made me LOL.

The CC where I work at (small town/city) has more than enough people lined up than PS3's are available. People didn't start lining up for the 360 until 8PM the night before, but the first PS3 campers arrived here Tuesday evening. Fucking ridiculous.

One thing that concerns me though is that some of my friends (7, actually) are sharing a tent where, at times, only one of them is in line taking shifts while the others work/eat/go on with their daily lives. They are figuring on just all showing up a few hours before the store opens to claim their spot. I told them that they are all going to get punched in the face, and I'd probably do the punching myself if I were behind them and didn't get one due to their shenanigans.

No people here, and I doubt they will until the day of. Had a Tornado here today and all around horrible weather.

Agreed much as i'm interested in the next generation.

I still have plenty of games left to play on my other consoles.

I'm at the point now with all the hype i'm seeing for the, PS3 is driveing me nuts now :annoyed:

Btw i'm still sticking to my plans far as it go's.... wii next year for me ps3 when the price drops.

TRU will have at least 100 Wiis for each store (some will have 150 or even 200), don't waste a second camping out, just show up at stores Sunday morning at 10 or 11 depending on the store. In comparison, Walmart will only have 20. Nintendo and TRU are practically in bed, sorry for such cheesy analogy, but that's how close their relationships are.

Just to be safe I'ma camp out starting like 3 AM at Target just because I never sleep anyway, and then if for some reason they don't have any (or there's a line) I'll just go to TRU.

My understanding now is that WAL•MART will start passing out 50 tickets tomight at 10PM for the 12AM 11/17 sale(that's a pretty dangerous time to be making a purchase imo)

Police are investigating a
drive-by shooting involving people waiting in line for a video game.
Dozens of people camped out in front the Best Buy store on Nicholasville Road. They're hoping to get their hands on a Sony PlayStation 3 console. But the wait turned serious when someone drove by and fired shots at people waiting in line.

Four people were hit by the BB pellets, including 27 NEWSFIRST reporter Elizabeth Dorsett. She was interviewing someone in line at the time. None of them were seriously hurt.

Police came to the store to investigate. They're still looking for a suspect.
Lexington Police say they'll stay at the Best Buy to make sure people in line stay safe.

The PlayStation 3 goes on sale Friday morning at eight. The consoles are selling for more than $600 a piece.

Doesn't seem that long ago that many people here were predicting PS3 wouldn't sell... They really seemed so sure... So much for that theory.

Actually, I think the theory was that the initial launch would sell out because most of the diehard Sony supporters and resellers would buy up the systems.

It's down the road that was sort of uncertain because once the resellers disappear because they can't make a profit, and the Sony supporters have their systems, what happens with the average gamer? The price tag is insanely high for a console system that is not niche, so it's going to be interesting to see how people react as they become more available.

I know I've already had people tell me there was "no fucking way" they would be buying a system for that price.
