People who smoke around their children…

Earlier, I was sitting in traffic and I happened to notice some pile of shit Cavalier sitting next to me (early 90’s, beat to shit…you get the point). In the passenger seat was this fat bitch puffing away at her cigarette. In the back seat were a small boy and a kid in a child’s safety seat.

The fucking windows were rolled up…

Their windows had the brownish look that auto glass get when its been exposed to heavy amounts of cigarette smoke.

Is it just me or should this be considered child abuse?

This isn’t 1950, hell; it’s not even 1980. My mother smoked like this around me and now, as an adult, I have serious sinus problems (allergies, chronic infections). I have to see my ear, nose and throat doctor often and I’m almost always on antibiotics. As a matter of fact, I might have to have surgery on my sinuses sometime soon. I DIRECTLY link this to the massive amounts of cigarette smoke I inhaled as a child.

As an adult, you can do what you like. Smoke if you want to. I’m not one of those guys that think you should remove a person’s right to do that but exposing a child to it constantly is nothing short of abuse. That child will have years or possibly a lifetime of problems because of this.

Am I overreacting or is this a problem that should be addressed?

No you're right, thats bullshit. Not only do the kids have no choice but their system would suffer worse damage than their dumbshit parents.

I had a friend who had his first smoke given to him by his father on his 16th birthday, I thought that was beyond retarded.

Having guns around is good for your kids and sets a great example in firearms saftey.

Smoking in the presence of your kids not only endangers their health, but sets a poor example of future behavior.

There is more to it than that....

Many poor people smoke for the same reason they have the highest obesity rates.

I used to hate that as a kid, since my dad smoked in the car and rolled up the windows. The cart had a sick smell after some time and I would always get nauseous if the ride was over a half hour long.

As a smoker, I have no idea how anyone can stand smoking with the windows up. I'd gag myself, never mind whoever else is in the car.

I do smoke in my car, always with the windows down, and take good care that my car never has any lingering smell. Many people have been surprised that they never noticed it.

But based on my experience, I never smoke in the car period with my children there and never directly in front of them either.

But I guess I have a good immune system, despite all the fumes I've breathed in as a child, I have no allergies or any condition of any kind. And rarely do I even get sick.

I think Norton put it best when it comes to the gun thing… When/if I have a child, I will keep my guns and ammo secure and locked. That is the responsible thing to do.

As far a cigarette smoke goes, any smoking in the house or in a car will expose them to it. To me, it’s pretty open and shut. If you smoke, do it outside the house and if there’s kids in the car, don’t smoke.

Before I quit smoking years ago, I used to smoke close to a pack a day and even then I could go without one for an hour if I had to.

My parents would always chain smoke in the car with me. It was worse in the summer because they'd bitch about opening a window saying it was letting the cold A/C air out. Likewise on cold days over the heat.

I can also remember waking up on sunday mornings to find my parents and half my relatives over in the kitchen all smoking like fiends. Half the house would be thick smoke from them.

I think to blame your allergies and other general health problems on your parents when you yourself were a heavy smoker is pushing it a bit. I don't think it's right to smoke around children in such a confined space, but there is far more important things in the world than this. Plus why would you need to teach a child responsible gun handling? Unless he/she lives in Somalia...etc this is moot!

I remember having a teacher at school accusing me of smoking in Jr High. She smelled my hands and told me they “smelled like I smoked”. I told her my mother smoked in the house…

I know I’ve said this before but I sport shoot, I don’t hunt (other than the ground squirrels eating my bird seed).

Sport shooting is activities like tactical sport shooting (quick draw, walk through situation), range shooting (handguns) and long range target rifle shooting. I was raised doing it and I do it as an adult. It’s fun and just like skeet shooting, is harmless.

People like you that brand firearms as a tool with the singular purpose of killing a person are ignorant. To me it’s a sporting device, nothing more, nothing less. I don’t carry in public, I don’t think of guns as toys. Possibly you should remove your head from your colon and stop simply believing what the media tells you.

When it comes to children and guns, education and familiarity is the key. From the time I was old enough to properly use one, my father took me to the range and not only taught me the power of a firearm, he taught me how to use one safely. It was no longer an enigma and like the knives in a knife drawer, I left them alone. They were never toys and I never even thought about touching one. When we didn’t use them, they were locked up. If you hide guns away and make the mysterious to a child, they will seek them out. You don’t have to lock up your knife drawer, turn the gas off to your stove, lock up the baseball bats and hid golf clubs now do you? Why? Because they are of no interest to a young kid. Educate the child and let them use it in a safe environment and they will not be tempted to use one at home. This was the case with all of my friends growing up (almost everyone I know had some form of firearm in the house, big hunting community) and none of us ever thought about playing with them.

Due to my father, I had full knowledge of both pistols and hunting rifles by age 12. Right down to taking them apart to be cleaned.

I don't hunt, but enjoy going to firing ranges.

Both my parents smoke, perhaps their smoking has something to do with me smoking (tho as a child i always claimed I never would), I dont resent them in any way for it as I enjoy smoking and am old enough to know better.

I'm old enough to know also that one shot of a gun can kill where as one puff or secondary inhale of a cigarette s very unlikely to have the same effect.

Ill6 has the right idea about ingrained gun ideas, but it also works the other way where the rest of the civilized world has in ingrained anti-gun idea.

I am not sure why but the smoking threads always have something come up (like guns) as a counter argument.

I don't smoke and don't think people should smoke around their kids. I doubt there is a doctor any where out there that would say that having your kids breath in second hand smoke is a good thing.

As for the gun argument, if you have kids, you need to be responsible and lock up your fire arms. I was an expert with the 9mm when I was in the Army but I do not own a fire arm now and have not owned any since the birth of my first child. I like to think that if an intruder breaks into my house, I can beat him to death with my bare hands.:tickled: If not, I kind of doubt that I could have got to the key to unlock the gun and load it prior to him killing me anyway.

Simply because you have the view that guns are for sporting/hunting purposes is extremely narrow minded and is not the true purpose of the majority of firearms! I have no problem with hunting/sporting firearms. But i'm just a media whore and don't know shit! I would like you to explain how any assault rifle or 9mm pistol is a sporting device? First off, Ill address the 9mm issue.

-9mm is a VERY common round used in sport target shooting, along side .45, .357 and .38, it is as common of a round as it gets. If you're going to bring up 9mm (again, something repeated, and repeated, and repeated in the fucking media), why not bring up the rest? There are .45, .44 and other rounds just as deadly in the wrong hands.

-Assault rifles do not have much of a purpose, I'll admit that. People (like my father), like to collect and target shoot them. I'll admit that they're a blast to shoot. I honestly agree with you on most of your points and also agree that gun crime in general is blown out of proportion by the media. But i believe to use the hunting/sporting argument for firearms is just as much a media driven argument as any other. We all know that the majority of guns are tools used to kill human beings and to deny that is just wrong. There is nothing irresponsible about a sport shooter having guns in his house kept safe under lock and key. Hunting is legal in England also and people have access to similar weapons such as shotguns, rifles, etc, so it is possible for people to understand the argument from outside America. The right to bear arms in the US constitution was never intended to cover hunting (that was a given that people would have weapons for that purpose), but instead it was to allow the people the access to the tools to overthrow a regime/defend themselves....etc. In all of these purposes the gun would only have one purpose.....to kill! So keep all the sporting firearms you want, just get rid of the other stuff. But, i know this would never happen in America as its a ingrained way of life. But i still believe there is no need for 98% of the firearms available to the civilian population of the world in general.

Look, nobody is denying the fact that guns were created for killing others. However, we don't live in a perfect world, or at the very least a peaceful world. We probably never will, so getting upset over the fact that guns kill, and whether or not you agree that civilians in America should have them is really inane.

I remember seeing this woman with two of her children waiting for the bus. Both were about toddler age and she was pregnant with a third. She had a cigarette between her fingers as she got off on her stop.

I was ready to follow her and beat the living shit out of her.
