PS3 Impressions .

Have been playing on my PS3 for the last few hours. Here are some thoughts:

PS3

First impression: the thing weighs a ton. Had to carry it quite a long way, and it is heavy.

Looks very sexy.

It is very, very quiet, even when loading.

User interface is just like that of a PSP, right down to the sound effects.

Touch sensitive buttons are pretty cool.

I had to upgrade to OS 1.02 in order to play Resistance.

SIXAXIS

Build quality seems high.

New 'deep' L2 and R2 buttons feel good.

Main use of the PS button is to access top level menus and turn the PS3 itself off.

Haven't tried to use it via bluetooth yet.

Genji

Like it a lot so far. Sure, nothing groundbreaking in the gameplay department so far, but awesome visuals and music, plus controls that really flow well and it seems to work for me. The control of the characters really does feel fluid. So far have met up with Benki and Shizuka (?). She has a very different feel to that of the two original characters. Fixed camera angle hasn't been an issue for me so far. Feels a bit weird at first, but got used to it pretty quickly.

Resistance

Presentation (menus and such) is a bit crap to be honest.

In game visuals are pretty impressive, but have a bit of a fake look to them.

1950s setting is pretty interesting. Driving a tank around York is quite a lot of fun.

Game seems pretty hard, and the enemies are pretty damn smart. They hide under cover most of the time, taking well aimed pot shots, then they will come looking for you if you don't go after them. Plus, don't expect them to stand around and get shot.

Found myself accidentally tapping the R2 weapon change button quite a bit during normal play.

Starts off in a city which is OK, but then heads down into a dried out river bed which is way more atmospheric and tense. Good suspense with a good feeling of anticipation for what is going to come next.

Overall

System weighs a ton, but is rather impressive.

Genji and Resistance seem pretty decent titles. Not outstanding maybe, but seem like solid games for the launch, and certainly give a decent taste of what we can expect from future PS3 titles.

May go and grab Ridge Racer 7 tomorrow.

You said you have been playing for a couple of hours, so you must have found someplace that broke release date (since it is only midnight 11/11 in Japan at the time of writing). Give us some impressions on how the scene is over there.

Glad to hear you are happy with the PS3. It just didn't do it for me. Ah well, glad to hear you got one;)

Yeah, let's just say that I didn't buy it from Yodobashi...

Nor did I queue for it.

After playing video games since the launch of Pong, I think this is the first console I have ever purchased at launch. I have to admit, I was very excited.

The main reason I wanted one is for Gran Turismo HD. Still, Genji and Resistance seem pretty solid, so they will do just fine until next month when I can get my hands on Formula One and GT HD (provided it isn't delayed...).

It only plays JPN PS1 and 2 games, and I'm sure the dvd is region 2 NTSC only. I'll find out real soon...:)

Tomorrow I will have a go at loading my Gran Turismo 4 data on the PS3 HDD, and playing GT4 on it. I would have tried tonight but I wanted to make sure the SIXAXIS got a full charge via the USB cable, and I only have the one cable (the memory card also uses a USB cable, but doesn't come with one).

Beyond that though I can't do any other testing as I don't have consoles or software from other regions.

It is always exciting getting a new system.

However, you are usually very lucky to find one or two (system seller) games the first year. The second year and beyond for a system can be were it really becomes enjoyable. This is pretty evident with newer systems like the 360 and DS as well.

I always enjoy opening the box, examining the console every little aspect and when I plug it, and play. It's a great feeling...

And yea good luck defending it.

Have you played some 2nd generation 360 games, or any new PC games? How do PS3 graphics compare with them?

Man, I want a PS3, but why can't they make one in flat black? That polished look gets people like me freaked out. It's the same with the PSP, they show every fingerprint and piece of dust or lint, and it's extremely noticeable for people with mild OCD. :mad:

I ordered a replacement faceplate for the PSP I just got, and it's flat black for this reason.

To answer some of the other questions:

I spent 72,240 Yen (614 USD) and got a 60GB PS3, Resistance, Genji, and the PS2 memory card connector.

Magnaflux: Yeah, I am a big Silent Hill fan, and am looking forward to any announcements.

The PS3 comes with a power cable (no external power device unit for the PS3, all internal), basic AV cable, LAN cable, and USB cable for SIXAXIS and stuff. It also comes with a SIXAXIS.

It does indeed work with existing PS2 AV cables. I just unplugged my PS2 cable and put it straight in the back of the PS3.

I am playing it at 720p. It looks very nice indeed. You can set this in the system settings, so now it boots in 720p too. My TV doesn't support 1080p (although I need to double check that).

Incidentally, in case you don't know, when you boot, you get a little orchestral fanfare. Like it.

All of the PS2 component cables are going to sell out in the U.S.
And all of the Ebayers who sell PS2 component cables for $3 are going to triple the price after next week.

A few more bits:

Bluetooth with the SIXAXIS works just fine. Pad has a decent weight and feels fine.

Uploading PS2 data onto the PS3 with the adapter is easy. It just creates a virtual memory card on the PS3, then you assign that virtual memory card a virtual memory slot number.

Gran Tursimo 4 worked just fine.

It looks like PS2 games run at 480p by default (assuming your TV can display it). I fired up GT4 and it automatically came up in 420p, but the game itself was set at 480i (from within the GT4 screen settings menu).

You can power the PS3 both on and off with the PS button on the SIXAXIS.

Have an errand to run now, but I'll play more Genji later today and post some more impressions.

Best looking console Sony ever designed and I LOVE the shiny reflective black they used. It's a system that, aesthetically, puts the 360 to shame.

Awesome that I can use my PS2 component cables, now I don't have to buy any.

I want one but this little piggy won't be able to go to market until well into next year. May as well play my 360 to death before I jump on this and at the MSRP.

no shit, terrible idea to get that piano gloss black for a console, that thing will be covered in dust and finger prints daily. and cleaning it never seems to work.

That's really not true. The only time you have to touch the PS3 is to eject a disk, and even that is only using the touch sensitive plate.

You may even be able to eject disks via the SIXAXIS, but I haven't seen that option yet.

Thanks for the personal experiences with the PS3 guys. Sounds nice so far but i'm sticking with the 360 as my next-gen console for now. I'll probably grab one once the rush slows down and they're easier to grab off the shelves.
