What's your favorite self stereotype ?

Lets face it, no matter what race, religion, culture, how you dress, act or any of the countless ways people get grouped off, we all get
stereotypes directed at us. Most are negative, but I find ones shot at me rather amusing.

Me...since I'm non-masucline looking and prone to look or act metro/androgynous/whatever that I'm gay. I could care less if someone really believes I'm gay, but the results of people doing it can be amusing.

Just today at work a new girl was bitching about her ex b/f and called him a faggot. She assumed I was a gay and might have taken offense to her using that word, so right after she said it she started to explain herself to me that she wasn't a homophobe and just prone to use the word as a vague insult.

I let her babble on for awhile in this deep worded apologetic self explaination before telling her....why would I care ? I'm not gay. Then that triggered another long winded apology about assuming I was gay.

I landed up hearing 10 minutes of apologies for doing nothing, but I found humor in her self guilt while doing it.

I'm Indian and people usually assume one of two things:

A. I'm a terrorist and linked to 9/11

B. I'm going to be a doctor

I prefer B.

Hahaha, some weeks ago I was at a restaurant with a friend and 2 girls - I ordered smørrebrød as an appetizer. We all ate a bit, but my friend didn't eat at all, because he isn't very open-minded when it comes to food.

So the waiter comes and notices my friend did not even try his smørrebrød. He asks why, and I gently replied "because he is fucking gay".

What did the waiter reply? He said "really!? because I am gay too!"

Hahaha, what an entertaining moment.

Im Iraqi, and my favorite is that I am afgan :oh_no:

Since i'm Italian (and living, for a few days still, in The Netherlands), people assume that i go around with instant pizzas, mandolins, etc. Noisyness, lack of will to work, tendence to fool around with women, anything you can think of the stereotypical Italian. I actually don't look like the stereotypical Italian as well, as i have red/auburn hair, gray eyes, fair skin. Of course, women demand that i spend my time trying to act funny and to bed them, regardless if they're doable or not.

Point is, Italy is a continent by itself. I stick to a number of stereotypes of my specific zone - the Appennines (the central mountains) - which means a "mountain-bred" style. I don't try to always be "funny", i'm hard-working (even a stakanovist, if i need to) and i tend to be respectful of people's privacy (i.e. i'm not noisy). Also, i am used to rather cold and dry climates (mountains are mountains), so i endure the cold much better than the average dutch. Also, i am a well without bottom when it comes to food and drinks, albeit relatively slim :chimp:

two perpetual presumptions that I have had to deal with for years:
I'm a drug dealer and I am open for business.
and
I'm a psycho.

second one is slightly more observation than presumption. it's not true though. just a veil.

Having a darker complexion and a pretty big shnoz than most pacific islanders... When I used to have shoulder length hair, people always mistook me for being Native. People were always like, "YOUR ASIAN?!! Yeah right. Get out of here."

It's funny because, people at work thought I came from the reservation. Asking me all these questions about what tribe i came from. I guess wearing that long coat with the dreamcatcher design wasn't such a good idea either.

Now, that I have shorter hair, people always mistake me for being latino(even my own culture too). Which I don't mind. That way i can flirt with the hot looking mama cita's.

Since I look like the typical fat, nerdy, white guy (and I wear glasses) people think I know lots about computers (I don't).

I am a very big and strong guy (6'10" and 330lbs) and people always ask if I play football or basketball. Well I did back in high school and college, but now I write software, namely video games :)

I've never fit any stereotype to be honest.

Since most people equate South Americans with having a dark complexion, they are surprised when I tell them where I'm from. When I explain about the amount of European blood in Argentina, they also get surprised.

But other than that small detail, I've never fit any stereotype to be honest. I'm normal looking, good height, well spoken and extroverted.

I don't dress in any way that makes people assume something different about me.

BTW, whenever I am in Argentina, people automatically know that I'm not from around there since I'm paler than most and dress slightly differently.

I get the same thing. A friend of mine is really into fighters, and whenever he fights as/agains characters like Benimaru/Vega, he always makes a comment about how gay that character is, then turns to me and says "Not to offend you or anything", and then I always tell him that I'm not gay. Its kinda funny, but starts to get annoying after a while. I swear, some people just can't tell the difference between homosexuality and narcissism.

I grew up in a predominantly black area, and have been making and producing Hip-hop for around 15 years now. When I had to move, people at my new area presume I'm some wigga eminem/vanilla ice wannabe - its especially funny as for years no black people questionned it, its only white people who seem to think its strange :kekeke: its not like I dress like Ali G or anything :lolz:

People think I'm gay just because I sway my hips when I walk, and occasionally suck a fat dick or two.

Fucking ignorant bastards.

I can't say people have any serious expectation when they meet me... I don't really look like any particular ethnicity (I'm 100% Persian, but I've had a number of Persians go "Oh really, what half?" "Uh, both." "O RLY?"). Because I get pegged as Israeli, Argentinian, or whatever I never find any real stereotypes thrown my way --though on rare occasions I sense mild discomfort in people who can't peg me into a category.

The closest things:

• In college (USC) everyone assumed I was in the film school
• I'm not as large as Big Shady, but because I know a lot about college football and I'm the size I am, I've had a lot of guys assume I played football at 'SC, including former college and NFL football players --looking at them when we're at the gym I realize I have the same (not peak) physique. Hah, I was a theater guy in HS.

my uncle called my spanish friend "squanto" at dinner once. We all did a lot of fake smiling that night.

Me... Metrosexual. I stand idle kind of.... girlish.

I get people thinking I'm nerdy because of my glasses and introverted demeanor. I guess that would be partially right, but I'm starting to grow out of it.

I also get people thinking I'm gay. They think that because I'm passive and shy, usually don't have a girlfriend, and am skinny. Actually, I haven't had a girlfriend for awhile. I tend to clam up around the ladies, am slow to get to know people, and am very picky.

Because of my dark complexion people mistake me for Latino -- which is kind of easy to do here in California. Once, back in Middle School, I had this Mexican dude come up to me. He had his whole head shaved except for the pony tail he had; he had on plaid and baggy jean shorts and says, "Hey, you down with Bulldogs?" The Bulldogs are/was a local gang here in Fresno; can't remember if they're named after the CSU Fresno bulldogs or what, but I quickly told him that I wasn't into that shit and walked off as fast as I could.

Then when I tell people I'm Native American (Paiute/Miwuk) I get all sorts of people going, "OMG, I'm totally Indian too! I'm 1/78,000th Cherokee!!!" and all sorts of rubbish. I even heard, "My so-and-so was once a Cherokee princess!" :mad: No Native American tribe has European nobility titles in its social structure you fucking posers!!! Away from me!!!

And then I get hit up all the time for spare change from Latino bums and then when I don't speak Spanish they look at me funny. :tickled:

One time I was going to San Diego and I was boarding the AmTrak at Union Station in L.A. and this homely looking white dude came up to me, "Hey, dude, can you spare some change? I gotta eat man, I'm so hungry." I try to use my brown-ness and go, "Uh, que dices? No comprendo, no tengo dinero." Motherfucker starts speaking Spanish back at me! I gave him two quarters and walked away cussing. :angry:

It's hard out there for a pimp.

People always think I'm part Asian because I'm 5'1" and have dark brown hair and have Hello Kitty on my keychain. Sometimes I play along and start talking in Japanese with that over-the-top cutsy bishojo lilt. ^_^

I'm a big dude with a military haircut. I have met a lot of people who think I'm a soldier of fortune / militia gun toting dude like Merc. While I am ex-military, I'm an extremely liberal person. A hippie in disguise :D

As for stereotypes, I have a accent that supposedly makes me sound very smart/sexy, and people assume I'm more intelligent and attractive than I really am when they just talk with me on the phone. I'm neither intelligent nor attractive.

If I was smart, I'd be a phone sex operator. If I was attractive, I wouldn't have to buy my own drinks.

Well, maybe I am attractive.

People think that just because I'm a clerk at convenience store that I must be a slacker who dropped out of high school, is too stupid to go to college, and has no aspiration to better himself.

Other then that, i don't know.

Well due to my personal style (if you can call it that) of Blue jeans rolled into either dark brown Corcoran WWII era "jump boots" or Brazos work boots, and the usual plaid assortments of button up overshirts + the silver bullet brigade Lifetime NRA member bullet dangling from my neck as a necklace + high & tight Marine Corps haircut...

Ppl immediately think I'm some ex military guy. I get all kinds of ppl wanting to know what unit I was with and all kinds of shit. Unlike a lot of BS artists out their who make claims they can't back up, I tell it true. That my manner of dress is of a rugged fashion and I'm 9 1/2 years MCT (Military Combat Trained) by the Brown Boot [ppl always need a history lesson on this it seems] / old guard military vets who served mostly in Korea and Nam, but that I was never in the US Armed forces, but it wasn't for lack of trying. Then the next question is what I do for a living and when I tell them "Security Police" for a PSC (Private Security Contractor) made up of ex military and ex LEOs, they still don't get that I work for a privatizied police force who have absolute jurisdictional authority on the properties we're contracted out for and only call in the regular LEOs when someone needs to be taken off propety... Despite all that description, the next question is > So you're in the Air Force as a cop then? Security Police? To which I just shake my head. Or they can't understand the difference between a Security Guard and an SPO (Security Police Officer) [and there is a BIG difference]. I guess being too ruggedly dressed off duty aside from being naturally stoic can work against me at times, but I'll never be a part of the Abercrombie & Fitch crowd.

Also I hate the misconception that because I have heated opinions on things and have a foot-to-ass approach to life, and am not an apologetic slob, or a liberal, that I'm automatically some nut job on the loose. Nothing could be further from the truth, hence why offline I don't regularly give my 2 cents out about much these days. Despite the overexaggeration on these boards with my persona, I'm quite normal and have to be for the profession I'm in, and on the job I'm 150% professional and NICE to the people I often remind I'm there for as well as operational regulation enforcement at the various sites I work, ranging from section 8 government housing facilities to construction sites to night clubs and more where the shit can hit the fan at any given moment and a "hot dog" is the last thing the company needs. It's just sad that one has to basically be lock step & Politically Correct in order to be considered "normal" is all. Also why the hate for being a high context individual?

As for me, due to my round eyes and high nose, people think I'm half white, when I'm full Vietnamese (although a lot of Vietnamese tend to have rounder eyes than other asians). Also, just because I'm not very talkative at school, my classmates think I'm very shy, and are quite surprise to see me at the social scenes. I also get the gay stereotype because I keep in good shape and am a neat freak.

I have had that "misconception/stereotype" on occassion but really, most ppl either go in the other direction (or at least side step out of my way when I'm walking through a place) or immediately want to strike up a conversation about what branch of the military I was in etc. For the few times the "gay-in-hiding" thing has come up, I have to admit I was pretty pissed off about it though, being confused for a homo is about as bad as being called/mistook for a Communist, though not quite as bad.

I blame contemporary society for any who have ever thought that about me, more than I do the individuals who had the misconception though. Ppl today who have no understanding of culture and/or the history of the last 65 years or so (mostly from about '44 - '62) WONT understand someone who's rugged and has heated opinions. In 2006, dressing in the manner I do and being inherently PROUD of being a 100% red blooded American hetero dude (though I do like to ass spelunk on a woman, much to the dissapointment of a few of the ppl of the misconception I'm quoting you on.) is just viewed as weird today is all. Since most are going to simply dress in a casual fashion (Aber Crombie, American Eagle Outfitters, etc.) or be all business like (suits), seeing someone like me and hearing my views automatically makes a more openly accepting society towards homos THINK that I might be one. But like I've said before, raised by a hard assed military instructor of a father + vets, being MCT for 9 1/2 years and having part of me programmed by the writings of Mickey Spillane... well, I just make it a point (even moreso) to be inherently a "Grunt" / "Uga, Uga" kind of dude because I'm sickened by the limp wristed half-fag (if not outright Gay) look and manner of behavior that our politically correct and candy assed times has proven to be the way of the future.

I'm like the whitest motherfucker out there (I'm Scottish/Irish) and I've had lots of mexican people thinking that I'm mexican. I have no clue why-- I'm 6'4", light complected, have light brown hair (not very dark hair), and I have dark blue/green eyes. My ex's family (they're mexican) thought I was mexican when they first met me, former co-workers thought I was mexican, perfect strangers, etc. Some people even try to talk spanish to me, automatically assuming that I know what the hell they're talking about. WTF?

I get a similar thing, but in the opposite direction. Asian people think I'm every kind of Asian but Vietnamese (maybe it's that half look I mentioned earlier). I was on Vietnam Airlines from Japan to Hanoi once, and the stewardesses on the flight spoke both Vietnamese and Japanese. When it came time to serve drinks, this one stewardess spoke Vietnamese to all of the passengers; however, when she got to me, she switched to Japanese.

I didn't read The Stand that early (12th grade actually), but I did grow up watching slasher flicks and desensitizing myself.

Ooh, I got one! I'm a tall, bald, black man that is eaisly mistaken for a thug because of the baldness and posture while in reality I'm a tall, bald, blackman with an undeniable love for Christ, getting his education, and that plays games other than EA sports games. the only stereotypes i ever really have had to deal with have to do with being a single mother or being female...apparently, the fact that i'm a single mom means that i'm uneducated and looking to latch onto the next guy that comes along. on the flip side - since i'm female, my primary concern when dating guys is money. i've had a lot of guys tell me how they make soooo much money, and/or own this or own that, as if that's going to make me want to sleep with them...thanks, but if i want money, i'll go get my own. i fucking despise the idea of having to answer to a significant other for funds. :mad:

I get from a lot of people that I'm younger than I look. Everybody thinks I'm 20-22, but I'm really 30.

That single mother thing is a bad stereotype. I bet you get people thinking you're a chain-smoker/on welfare/white trash/stupid, etc. The bad thing is I know at least a few single moms that fit some of those stereotypes.

otherwise, i generally try to be pretty nice.

being cuban is cool. especially if you live in miami. thing is i'm cuban and i live in austin texas. so any and all other cuban people are across the gulf of mexico so here everyone assumes i'm mexican. and they all assume i know spanish (i knoe a good bit but i'm not fluent) and well it's not really bad i mean i can't blame em but eh it does sometimes bother me.

If it makes you feel better, Greg, I would never, ever think you were gay. You simply don't look it. Of course, in the outer-Metro (whoa, excuse the pun) Twin Cities, I can see people making that mistake for lack of knowing anyone gay.

While I've never directly had to deal with this stereotype (those kind of women are generally easy to spot and avoid), my g/f has female coworkers at her law firm (people making a boat load of money, mind you) who still are that way...they talk about it all the time... as if it couldn't get anymore silly. I can't stand women (or men) who are that way.

bobaks stereotype is foreign hard working straight laced guy who earns fuckloads yet would do his job for half the salary for the love of it all.

I'm working in the IT biz so people automatically assume I'd be extremly interested in using PCs or fixing OS problems (and consequently keep on draggin in their stinky old Windows boxes they've just trashed) but nothing could be farther from truth. In reality, I use PCs as tools just like screwdrivers or hammers (or as a medium to talk to people via the internet) but other than that, I don't care for that cheap shit at all, the whole IT biz can suck my little König Ludwig II.... 30 years ago, scientists were happy about computers because they actually helped them with their job, but then came multimedia and fucked it all up beyond recognition.

I guess the word "desillusioned" would be appropriate here...

If I were a large computer manufacturer, I'd probably take the next logical step and sell my super-duper multimedia boxes at toy stores, right next to Barbie dolls and soft toys... :chimp:
