Questions on the XBox 360

Ok, so I'm likely getting an HDTV next month (this set) and the temptation to get an XBox 360 is high so I can play a bunch of games I've been wanting to try out (DOA4, Quake 4, Chromehounds, possibly Prey and Oblivion).

But I have some general questions on the system that I figured you guys could answer since you probably went through the same stuff I'll have.

1.) How do you set up your HD output preferences? Can I tell the 360 to always upconvert 720p to 1080i since that's what my set will support?

2.) Live. I have XBox Live with the normal XBox. I do not want this to go away. How hard is it to get my Live subscription moved over to the 360? Can I still use my Live account on my normal XBox for when I want to play SF3?

3.) Does the 360 play regular DVD's well? I know it can output DVD's in 480p. I don't have a regular DVD player and I figure that instead of blowing an extra $50-$100 on a DVD player I could just use the 360 to play my DVD's in 480p kind like how I used the XBox for normal DVD's now.

4.) Wireless Controllers, how do the charge and play kits (an extra $20 per controller) work? And how well do they work? I figure that for an extra $20 I can not have to buy alkies or use my other rechargables for the 360 wireless controllers.

5.) I have some nice XBox joysticks that I've built over the years. Are there adapters to plug an XBox stick into a 360? In fact where the hell are the wired controller ports on the 360? I can't see them from any pics of the unit I've found.

6.) How do I convince my wife to let me get one now instead of waiting for the price drop? :(

1. yes, in the menu settings you choose 1080i or 720p

2. All you have to do is got to xbox.com set up a passport.net account and key that to your gamertag. Then when you boot up your 360 you just enter in your passport.net info and it finds your gamertag and asks you if you want to use it on your 360.

3. yup, it plays DVDs, not too shabby a player either.

4. don't buy the play and charge, buy the quick charge kit. It comes with another battery and it charges in 1/4 of the time.

5. there are 2 USB ports under a hood cover on the front of the 360. I believe they sell quick disconnects that go from USB to the regular Xbox disconnect plug that allow the use of regular XBOX controllers or sticks. But you might as well throw away your S controllers, the 360 controller is the best damn thing ever for comfort.

6. Tell her since there will be a shortage of 360s around the holidays since the PS3 won't be in good supply. So everyone will buy the 360 and Wii. Don't know if it will come true but it's worth a try.

1. You go to the system options and tell it to do 720p or 1080i. If you leave it at 720p the tv will upconvert the signal. If you put it at 1080i the 360 will scale it up (if I remember right).

2.No clue. I dont have broadband.

3.Yes it plays regular dvds. Im pretty sure it supports 480p. I dont see why it wouldn't. I dont use my 360 for movies so I cant tell you how well they play though.

4.The charge and play kit comes with a rechargable pack that you put on the back of the controller. Once the charge dies you hook up the USB cable that came with the kit to the controller and the 360 to charge it back up. You can still play games while its charging.

5. No clue about any adapters. As far as I know I have not seen one. The controller ports are just USB so it may be possiable to get a XBOX to USB adapter. But I doubt this would work. I have read that every controller needs some firmware in it to work for the 360. But that could be bullshit.
Oh and the port are on the front of the system. They are hidden by a flap/door thing.

If you set it to 1080i, all games will run 1080i as will the dasboard; the only thing not 1080i will be DVDs (480p).

It's pretty easy to transfer your account, though I can't recall the exact procedure. And yes, you can still use Live on your original XBox after the transfer.

It's pretty decent, actually; better than the original XBox or the PS2.

This I can't answer since I just purchased a set of four rechargable batteries from TigerDirect and I cycle them in pairs as they become drained. I choose to keep the vibration function disabled, which greatly increases battery life.

I remember; you made some awesome sticks! I know you can buy adapters for XBox-to-USB (I'm sure I've seen them somewhere) which 'might' work with the 360. There are two USB ports behind a panel/door on the front.

I concede that the pc version is probably better, but that dont stop the xbox game being among the finest created in its sphere.

The sad part is that I don't play competitively online anymore. I actually just want to do the single player of Quake 4, not a whole lot of multi.

Halo 2 online is more fun for me than say UT2k4 PC Online, so I figure the few times I need Deathmatch, I'll get it just fine on the 360.

Plus there's the whole it's $800 for a new gaming PC vs. $400 for a 360. I haven't touched my PC in so long for gaming that it's near criminal to spend $800 to upgrade it to decent gaming status, when I will need a 360 in the future anyway.

Don't have a X360 but I did remember hearing that the 360's USB ports will only accept pads from registered 3rd party makers (I don't know if it's a special firmware or just a specific manufacturer ID). So you might have to wait until someone hacks the 360 USB "protection" or a "registered" 3rd party maker makes an xbox to USB convertor. (Or hack a xbox 360 wired pad?)

I'm not sure where I read it, and I can't find that information right now. I figure your best bet would be to have someone with a generic USB pc pad to plug it into an X360 and see if it works. :P

I'm sold on Oblivion and Fable 2 myself, I'm not buying one yet as I know my grades will go to shit if I pick one up now. :kekeke:

No, you can not use your regular Xbox to play SF3 after the transfer!! Microsoft only allows your Live account to be linked to one system. If you wish to continue playing all the great 2D fighters on Xbox Live, you will need to purchase a separate account for each console. Microsoft is lame for not making the only games I want to play backwords compatible with the 360.

I don't do clans anymore and most of my PC gaming friends from school don't really game much online anymore either, so I'm stuck playing on retard-ville pub servers.

At least with Live it's easier to just go out and get a few good games in, especially with the buddy list and easily joining people I know online or IRL.

And I hate BF anyway. :loco:

Seeing as your other questions have been addressed, Hendrix, I'd make one comment on the Play-and-Charge: it sucks. I would estimate that each charge gives 120 minutes of play time, max. I guess it's better than buying batteries, but MS did pretty much nothing to optimize its performance.

Gonna have to try me that quick charge kit, sounds like.

You should be able to nab a new one for ~$360 shipped from overstock.com soon. That's probably about a $70 savings after tax and such, which is better than you are going to get new at the store for a long time. Watch the cheapassgamer forums, and you should get a good deal.

I get more charge out of it then 120 mins. Maby your battery is screwed. But I have gone two or three days without having to charge it. And thats playing about 2 hours or so everyday.

Anyways Im with JHendrix on not playing PC games anymore. Once I moved and couldn't get broadband anymore it just wasn't worth playing them. PC games are all about FPS and RTS games. Both of which are only fun online. Its just not worth paying 400-500 bucks every couple years for a vid card/CPU/MOBO/Ram upgrades. For what like the 2 or 3 good games that come out for the PC every so often.
I do miss those late night CS and Battlefield matches though :(

I've gone online with Rainbow Six 3: BA on my original XBox since migrating to the 360. I do realize they can't be logged in at the same time, but I'd say your above statement is incorrect.

Thats bull I have my Xbox and 360 setup I transfered my old Xbox account to my 360 then turned on my old Xbox and played some King of Fighters and Third Strike online.. The wierd thing is I didn't have to re-move my account onto my old Xbox?

You should have to though but its dead easy and takes 30 seconds, I used to move my to and from mine and my brothers xbox for online play constantly theres no way you need 2 accounts..

I'd say it's a little closer to Mechwarrior (not Mechassault) than Armored Core, in the general stuff it does. However, there's a physics engine at work when it comes to how you build your machine. Badly placed parts with recoil will show their affects, on the battlefield. The machine builder is insane, though.

Also, it's not quick like Mechassault or Armored Core. It's more like fast Mechwarrior speeds (given you accelerate faster than Mechwarrior machines, and there are faster bot models).

The attention to detail is definitely at Mechwarrior kind of standards, when fighting. Everything from how much armor a specific part has, as to learning how to recognize different parts of a Hound so as to target them and cripple them.


Also, the Gamertag is good anywhere you have it set up. Mine works fine across my Xbox and my 360.

Dude I was a Mechwarrior 2 whore back when I was in high school.

I saw the stuff for Chromehounds and it looks awesome and I definitely want to try it out.

I have to get DOA4, mainly because my wife and friends love the series - I kinda like it but I'd rather play KOF or SF if a fighter is to be played.

After that is a game for me. Quake 4 is a must have for me, but I'm interested in Oblivion, Chromehounds, and actually am somewhat tempted to try PDZ.

Oh and then there's the temptation to get Burnout Revenge since I didn't get it when it came out on the XBox and playing burnout in widescreen HD is so tempting, especially with some of my buddies who love the game.

The problem is buying a second wireless controller, the quick recharge kit, and then at least two games and I'm looking at $600. :(

Oh well, anyone interested in a nice 36" Flat CRT Sony TV (non HD)? Looking to unload it to someone in the tri-state area. :p

Yeah, I saw a few people with heavy weapons the side of their AV only to see them spin 450-degrees after they fired. Funny stuff. I like how the AV build interface is vastly simplified compared to Armored Core. I spent well over an hour just juggling the few parts I've earned so far in an attempt to find that kickass combination. I believe I only have forty of the 150+ parts. 4 hours in story and about 22% complete. Online looks to take quite a bit of time which is why I'm making the purchase today and returning the rental asap.

Don't miss out on Condemned if you like survival horror. It's first person, but it's a good one.

However, don't worry about buying everything at once, just get what you need, and pick a game from a genre you'd like to tackle first.

How are the controls in the game? If it's anything like Mechassault (which I thought was pretty damn fun) then I'm game. I don't expect it to be as arcadey as Mechassault was, but kind of a mix. Never played armored core much, and I'm not so sure I like the idea of going and spending a lot of time playing w/ weapons options on a mech for hours. I prefer to just kind of pick-up and play, but that's because I don't have a lot of free time anymore.

Here's my question for you 360 Vets, if you were buying a 360 now, what games would you buy? I know I'm crazy for wanting Quake 4, but I'm such a fan of Quake 2, and I don't want to get the PC version since I know my PC won't play the game as well as I'd like and it'd just make me more frustrated than anything instead of just enjoying the game.

I'm not into survival horror that I can't just up and shoot things in. IE. I don't like RE4 but I LOVE Doom 3. Mainly because after screaming my ass off at the demon popping out at me, I've got a trusty shotgun ready to blow it's damn head off quickly and efficiently. :D

My problem is wanting too much at once. On one hand I'd LOVE a nice RPG to sit and play through like Oblivion, since both the wife and I can sit through that, but I want a nice FPS. I'm really interested in Prey but after hearing how short it is I'm tempted to just rent it instead - unless the Multiplayer is really good. Though I have to see how I'll like a twitch FPS on a console.

For those of you that have Prey or maybe Quake 4, does it play similar to Doom 3 on the original XBox? I have a demo of the game I never tried so if it plays similar to that I could test the demo and see if it plays well enough to my satisfaction.

I really haven't picked up Quake 4, myself. As for the controls of Chromehounds, they are similar to Mechassault as far as the two sticks go. It's a bit of a different monster, though. For instance, you have to pay attention to your legs if you use bipeds and stuff. This is because, those legs move faster forwards than backwards. You'll be counting on terrain a bit more, this time, and fortunately there are some high hills with which to do so. Objects and towers help, too. In quite a few ways, I'd say it's about as simmy as Mechwarrior is, but the controls (driving mechanics) are a bit more arcade. Where in Mechwarrior (and steel battalion), you actually dealt with throttle controls for your movement.

I'd say hook up your 360 first and grab the demo, to see what they're like. Both of them are available. The short answer to your, do they control kind of like Doom 3, is yes. Quake 4 moreso than Prey, given Prey's unusual circumstances.

From what little I played of MechAssault I'd say the controls are quite similar, and they're considerably smoother than Armored Core. Typical dual analog control, left analog for movement, right analog for rotation. R3 click for interior/exterior view, RB to change weapons, RT to fire. I don't believe the face buttons are ever used, at least I never have.

...and that's about it. Meh, I'd avoid Quake 4. Horrible online server w/terrible lobby system.

Never played armored core much, and I'm not so sure I like the idea of going and spending a lot of time playing w/ weapons options on a mech for hours. I prefer to just kind of pick-up and play, but that's because I don't have a lot of free time anymore.

Here's my question for you 360 Vets, if you were buying a 360 now, what games would you buy? I know I'm crazy for wanting Quake 4, but I'm such a fan of Quake 2, and I don't want to get the PC version since I know my PC won't play the game as well as I'd like and it'd just make me more frustrated than anything instead of just enjoying the game.

Controls in CH are a lot like a normal hybrid FPS/third person shooter. It feels like playing a simplified version of Armored Core, IMO. Not that that's a bad thing, since most people are put off by AC's difficulty level and complexity, I think.

It's not as arcadey as Mechwarrior, but it's far more so than AC. It's a fun game, but not really a must-play on the level of Oblivion, Prey, various others. It is pick-up-and-play friendly, though, which I agree is nice.

How many games, in that second question? I've owned literally every game on the system besides Live '06, and I've kept all but about 4 or so. If I was just now buying a system and planned to pick up maybe 4-6 must have titles, they'd probably be Oblivion, Fight Night Round 3, Prey, Burnout Revenge (if you haven't played it on other consoles, substitute Project Gotham 3 here if you have), Condemned, and maybe NBA 2K6 (though 2K7 is due out soon). Good mix in there, those alone would keep me busy for months.

Quake 4 is pretty damn fun, BTW. Not a bad pickup, slowdown and all.

CoD2 (for the awesome single-player game)
G.R.A.W.
MotoGP'06 (it's addictive)
Need for Speed Most Wanted (I can't help it... I loved playing it!)
Ridge Racer 6 (if you like Ridge Racer, RR6 is incredible!)

BTW, Burnout Revenge kicks ass on the 360 Hendrix. I would skip out on Quake 4 though.
