Win XP on my iMac and game shots (pics)

Well, I finally got Boot Camp installed on my iMac last night and now I have a dual OS system! I’m happy to say that although annoying as hell, Windows XP is up and running just fine with no burps or problems. I even downloaded the demos for Battlefield 2 and Call of Duty 2. Both work fine and run as if it was a regular PC. Here’s some shots:

Funny enough, CoD2 on the Mac runs a little smoother but the audio on the XP version is better….

macs running XP, now there's something that doesn't suck. i might pick one up if they start shipping them with it.

Somehow I can’t ever see that happening. Boot Cap was free though as was my hacked version of XP.....no lockout/registration needed mutha bitches!


Besides...Xp can eat my balls.....I'd rather use OSX.

Boot camp is just the beginning.

OS X 10.5 (Lepoard is it?) is going to have something better. For those of you that are familiar with Unix/Macs its going to be a compatability layer like Classic, but capable of running XP apps. Think WINE for Unix only not so shitty. The new compatability layer is going to be fast too, like the Rosetta translation engine used to launch PPC apps on Intel hardware.

Translation - Launching Windows apps inside the Mac OS instantly.

Then what will people have to whine about? :kekeke:

Exactly.

For me there is no draw whatsoever to running XP on a Mac. I've run dual-boot systems in the past, and unless you have a real burning desire to run something that won't work in another OS it's a pain in the ass.

However, if you can run Windows programs within the Mac OS without having to install another OS, THAT would get my attention.

you could run wine on macos, they even used bochs as a core on ppc

This is more of an expirement than anything else. I want to play a few games like Star Wars Galaxies that aren't available on the Mac.

I won't be using XP that much....I just wanted to see it running.

Was in CompUSA last night, it was booted to WindowsXP. Apple must be making the BootCamp a selling point eh. Played a bit of Halo on it. The game is... alright I guess, I liked the terminal stories and the claustrophobic environment of Marathon trilogy better.

I think I am going to wait for those sexay rumours of Flash drive 'Gamer' MacBook pros to materialize, then I can finally work in MacOSX and play my bishoujo/hentai games in WinXP.

I'm still bitter about the move away from PowerPC processors.

I hope MAC mouses now have more buttons ... WinXP with 1 button = crap even when you have a key on the keyboard to replace it.

There s so much mess in winxp that you cannot have an efficient compatibility layer. The only way to have both at the same time is a virtual machine with proper hardware virtualization.

MacOS has supported 2 button mice for quite awhile now.

didn t know about these mice (dunno why i wrote mouses btw... how well). good enough i guess.
On the test i saw of bootcamp, under windows the tester had to press a key to simulate the right click, i think he had an old-school 1 button mouse then.

I've always been a PC user, but if Mac OS could support WinXP apps without a dual boot, I would switch right over. WinXP is just too unstable.

It seems to me like Apple is trying to take away all of my excuses for not buying a Mac.

The mouse knows which side you're clicking. Click on the left side, left click. Click on the right side, right click, click on the middle (pushing on the trackball), center click. It really is a smooth mouse, so far the best I've ever used. I too was skeptic until having used it.

The 360-degree scroll ball is the best thing about it, after using it a vertical only wheel seems rather useless.

You have to go to "keyboard and mouse" under system preferences (in the toolbar) and activate the right click feature (Mac will call it a "secondary button"). I had to....right off the bat it wasn't set up for it. Not sure why it comes this way.

You CAN run WinXP (as well as other OSes) as an application window on the Mac OS.

Parallels.com has software that supposedly lets you run multiple OSes at the same time. I'm trying out the demo with XP, works well. I can even have a common folder, but I chose to use an external HD and save common files there.

I'm trying out the trial for Linux right now. Or at least trying to get it set up.

For general use? No.

For gaming? Yes.

Parallels is great if you need to use things like Access or the little Diabetes management apps I use personally. It isn't good for gaming at all though because it hogs an entire processor, is an enormous ram hog, and doesn't give you the video capabilities that Boot Camp does.

Crossover Mac is equally impressive as it will allow you to run Windows programs within OS X, and without installing Windows in any way. It also doesn't use virtualization since there's no second OS, so it has been proven to run Half Life 2 and Access (the two most popular Windows only programs to me) as well as a host of other programs that they list on their site.

Intel OS X users should check it out, it's still in a closed-beta but if you're trying out some obscure programs they may let you in on it.

Until last week, my office machines were Pentium II's running 98, a Pentium III running XP, and my Celeron, the powerhouse, with 256 megs of ram.

Needless to say, we get by happily with Access and Peopleware.
