Nascar is boring, says Schumacher

Seven-times Formula One world champion Michael Schumacher has said he would never consider a move to Nascar.
Juan Pablo Montoya was released by McLaren after deciding to move to the US-based racing series, but Schumacher says he is not tempted to follow suit.

"What do you see in Nascar? What is exciting about it? I can't see it running around in ovals," said the 37-year-old German.

"I just don't see the challenge in it for me. Personally, I wouldn't do it."

However, Schumacher's view was not shared by former F1 world champion Jacques Villeneuve.

"Nascar has always looked very exciting, racing-wise," said the 35-year-old Canadian, whose contract with BMW Sauber expires at the end of the season.

"It's something definitely to look at if there's no Formula One."

After getting really into WRC last year, and going to watch 2005 Rally of Japan, I realised I prefer the rallying much more.

I love how they still have the nerve to call it "stock car" racing.

Plus it's interesting that they still use carbs, but then again the hicks and rednecks tend to be slow to adopt technology.

I never really understood the draw of watching people use ancient technology to make left turns all day. Maybe it's easier for the masses to grasp?

Anyway, I'm glad Danica Patrick wasn't serious about switching to NASCAR, she's way too refined to drive around with White Trash all day.

It isn't a sport either. It's a game. Calling NASCAR a sport is like calling RC car racing around a cheap plastic track a sport. Are video games a sport now?

The interesting aspect of Nascar is the long-time/endurance approach, that is something you don't have in any other formula or class, timing and strategic attacks are very important here and I can see why some people like it.... basically it's the motorized equivalent to athletic long-distance running which takes place on an oval track with several lanes.

What's more, it's much easier for a Nascar spectator to keep track of the race because you always see all the cars and the complete course, contrary to most F1 courses where the average F1 fan with an average-priced ticket only sees 20% of the whole race, if at all.

And make no mistake, some diehard F1 freaks I know are just as, uhm, simple-minded as your average Nascar fan...

But well, I'm not a huge fan of motor sports in general, I like motorbikes and big engines and whatnot but I rather drive/use them myself instead of watching others do it. :)

Nah, last year was great. It was a pretty close race as to who was going to win the championship between Alonso and Raikkonen. Plenty of wins by both Renault and McLaren.

I was thinking the same thing. I have never been to a NASCAR race, but I figured that is probably the case.

There are really only 3 ways of looking at it: from the TV viewer's perspective, from the driver's perspective, and from the perspective of a spectator at a race:

TV Viewer:

F1 wins hands down I think. Sure, you get crap races, but it still beats watching cars go round in circles.

Spectator at a race:

Maybe NASCAR wins here? At least you get to see much more of the race than just catching the cars every 2 minutes. I'm just speculating here. I have been to an F1 race, but not NASCAR.

The driver:

How many drivers do you see going from NASCAR to F1? Exactly. PUt it this way, I would rather drive ANY track in GT4 over the oval speed test track or whatever it is called. Fucking boring regardless of what car you are in. I totally agree with Schumacher in that respect.

Even so, WRC rocks :buttrock:

tak is right about NASCAR. 500 laps, 4 hour race, and a long line of ars going around at 200 miles an hour. it's all about timing, slipstream, and skill. to say that NASCAR doesn't take skill and ability is a lie. it takes a ton of skill to sit in that super hotbox of a car for hours planning your assault on every other guy out there. and the best way to see this is to watch some of dale earnhart's races. he would lay in the back minding his own business for a long time. then start his assault. and bam he's bumpcars til they moved out of his way, hit other drivers, make his way up to the top. it was very intimidating and tense to watch him do it. he drove at 200 miles an hour and just hit any other driver who he saw in his way. it was suicide the way he drove but he would often times get out in front before anyone could see him and would be gone. now yeah it may be on a circle track, but a lot goes on, on that circle that not everybody sees.

though i do think NASCAR is fucking stupid, i figure it's best to learn about something before you bash it.

I don't really follow either. If I happen to pass over an F1 race on TV once in a while though, I'll keep it there for a while and watch some laps. But NASCAR is garbage.

What I don't understand is why the hell would you make a move from F1 to NASCAR? That makes absolutely no sense, at least financialy. F1 cars are ten times as expensive as stock cars and moving to NASCAR results in a major paycut for the driver. F1 drivers are some of the best paid people in sports worldwide.

I don't get Montoya's move either. I guess it's an sports move. Ferrari doesn't want him, McLaren already said no, and he didn't want to go to Williams, he rather go to a country he knows and has lived there, with his wife and kids and settle down.

It's a good move for Nascar too. Getting a F1 driver isn't something that happens everyday

And I would still say that rally or f1 racing makes a whole lot more sense as a competition. Manuvering is what makes racing fun, not waiting and taking advantage of slipstreams and stupid shit like that. I think it's way more interesting to see how tight someone could drift through a sharp turn than to see Dale Earnhardt bump people into walls and take advantage of wind resistance. Still, rally and f1 are not sports.

Go check the definition of the word sport and you will see that automotive racing qualifies as a sport even though you don't think it does. You're entitled to your opinion, but it doesn't mean you are right.

So you're saying in "competitions" you don't get tired its just skill involved, whereas in sports it involves both stamina and skill right?

Well, for sure F1 is a sport then, don't kid yourself its extremely exhausting, F1 pilots are very fit, in fact Mark Webber sometimes trains with Lance Armstrong.

I think you really don't know much about F1 or motorsports in general.

F1 cars do, what, 4-5 Gs sideways back and forth. dealing with this, AND steering/working pedals isnt using your body? whatever...
It can also be EXTREMELY hot.

I have driven in several endurance races (on road courses, not ovals), and after a 30-60 min shift i was exhausted. especially in the summer, when track temperatures can be well over 100°, and in car temps can be over 120°

Not a sport my ass. F1 (and other high level) drivers are incredible athletes.

Before you go pointing to the average league bowlers who drink and what not, you need to get out of your narrowly defined world. A friend of mine was on national TV 13 years ago when the PBA Tour used to be broadcast on ABC. He could easily tell you it is a sport. Just because you seem to have a preconceived notion of sports being tremendously physical does not automatically make it so.

F1 is a sport even though you so dearly want to believe otherwise.

i'm not going to get into the debate on whether racing is a sport or not. because to me it is and always has been. but racing (and i mean all kinds of racing) has always been a thing for a certain type of people. whether it's racing started by a small town in france who figured driving for 24 hours would be intense as all hell, started by moonshine runners in the backwoods of the united states, or started by rich english playboys who wanted to see how quick they could get their delahayes, mercedes, alfas, jaguars, and bugattis going back in the day. to me racing has always been a sport and something i've wanted to be a part of ever since i first rode in my uncle's corvette at the age of 5. racing is something that attracts a certain audience. it's surely not universal. it attracts the kinds of people who have three cars in their driveway all of them the same kind and yet only one of the three runs. the kind of person who loves the smell of fuel and tires. he who can take the smoke of burning rubber and say "that looks fun" whether the guy is the type to drop a 454 into a chevy nova and slap a hurst shifter on the floor, or he's the type to tune a toyota supra up to 600 horses. and whether he watches NASCAR, cart racing, F1, rally, or even fucking boat racing. motor racing attracts an audience that let's face it a lot of people just don't understand. and i as a fan of racing can't explain it to em. i can't get through to them that stig blomquist could climb pikes peak faster than anyone could in the audi quattro. that ayrton senna is to this day one of the best drivers ever. or that richard petty+superbird=defeat for any challengers. some people just aren't made the same way or don't feel th same way but to me. racing is a test that no other sport no matter how athletic it may be can rival.

soccer brings the world together, baseball tells the story of america, and motor racing... that just makes you go "wow" you hear a porsche 917, a ferrari 599, or even a camaro SS rev that engine, burn out, and shoot off. and you just forget everything. racing is something that to me you have to be born with it in you or you just wont get it. it's engrained in your DNA. that could be a good thing, that could be a bad thing. but as long as there have been cars there has been racing. and as long as super fast cars barrel down the streets of lemans france once a year. there will be racing

That is true of some drivers, like Damon Hill for example, who probably only ever overtook about 3 people in his career, but Schumacher????!! :oh_no:

Racing drivers need to be in perfect shape to resist 3 hours of heat and punishment from the G's, so yea it's a sport

Stupidity at its finest is you having "ferrari" in your user name yet worshiping NASCAR.

I don't think anyone critical in this thread (unless they're being critical of the idiots posting) has ever participated in any racing event ever.

I've raced dirtbikes and cars. At it's peak, it simply comes down to making fast decisions or relying on your gut all the while a vehicle is beating your kidneys to death. Do racers lose weight? Yes and most of it is water weight, no question. Is it physically demanding? Absolutely it is. I don't think comparing it to a pussy sport like soccer is fair. If you fuck up in soccer, you'll at most probably suffer only a broken limb or concusion. If you fuck up on a bike or in a car, chances are good you might fucking snuff it.

Driving a 10 or 9 second (the fastest I've gone is a 10.04, talk about getting cheated out of the 9's) car is like being drop kicked by God. There is not much else to compare it to unless you're a jet pilot. All the G forces on you could probably mess you up if you aren't in good physical condition.

So some are still up in the air as to whether or not racing is a sport, I say it is. It's a rich man's sport much like golfing or horse racing. Originally only rich men could afford the sports cars much less race them.

Whoever the fuck says curling is a sport and hanging on for dear life in an 900 horsepower car isn't is mentally deficient or a homosexual.
