Is World War III Beginning?
Given the current situation in Iraq, the looming crises in Iran and North Korea, and the rising levels of hostilities between Israel, Lebanon, and the Palestinians are we seeing the beginning of World War III?
On the way home from class I was listening the radio and whoever was on at the time claims that we are indeed witnessing the prologue to such an event.

Nope. I don't think any credible scholars of international relations (or the vast, vast majority of them) believe that such a step is feasible (short of China going insane and attacking other countries, which is so unlikely now that they're becoming all about the Benjamins (or Maos...)).
Without them, there's simply not enough firepower on the "other" side, whatever that is. Sure, NK could throw out a few nukes, but they'd still lose in short order and there's no doubt.
Let's do a quick run down of the "Axis of Evil" (which was made up at the last second before that speech was given: it is generally agreed Iran as a last second filler because it sounds better to have 3 countries and Iran was at the top of the shit list that day, it could've very well been Sudan the next month).
- Iraq is just a beartrap that needs to be taken care of.
- Iran will never become a war for many logistical and political reasons.
- NK is a problem because, with nukes, you can just run in without knowing exactly where they are and expect Seoul to still exist. But as I said, though they can certainly go out with a bang, the damage they'd do is analygous to a nasty, scar-causing flesh-wound, not a fatal blow by any means.
- As for Israel, well, saying Israel is going to be a cause of things at this point throws all of the last 50+ years of their history out the window. I suggest those concerned read up on the history of Israel and explain how now is any different than before. If anything, it's actually much, much better :p
Again, there's no credible evidence. All we have are jackasses with bombs, and that's nothing new (it's just new to the US, and the wackos in the US are acting like it's something bigger than it is: a social annoyance that requires serious force to reduce).
Don't get me wrong, I know that even NPR will sometimes bring a looney saying (even with a quasi-credible guise) that the WWIII is coming; but it amounts to the social science version of finding a well-dressed, well-spoken scientist who promulgates intelligent design as a scientific theory. They may good talking heads, but they're by no means the norm in their field --in a way I think its a disservice because they only create excess worry in people who haven't taken the time to become well versed in the field. In that way it's analogous to the talking heads who've been worrying ignorant soccer moms about how MySpace is going to cause their children to be gang raped by derranged pedophiles.

The world has been much closer to another 'World War' many other times since the end of WWII.
There is a greater chance that other forms of conflict will emerge today, such as acts of terrorism, or limited conflicts between certain countries, but I don't feel we are particularly close to a World War at present.
