I am not impressed with the XBox 360 Demo

Played several demos today in Best Buy and Gamestop. Call of Duty 2 and that Rare Ltd game.

Amongst the 4 driving games in the demo unit avail to play/movie, and call of duty 2... maybe it was the monitor but given all the PC vs XBOX360 discussions as of late... I think I am NOT sold. God a $1000 PC could do better than what I saw on the demo, while doing all other PC duties avail to it as well.

Not sold. Not one bit. I'll wait to see what other games are avail for the 360 to see if that could possibly change my mind as well as the PS3. At least the PS3 will have more Japanese games available.

You're right, CoD2 looks like ass, genuine unadultered ass. Massively unimpressive stuff.

From what I've heard... The Xbox 360 just does not produce a realizedleap of quality.

maybe it's because i'm not a PC gamer, or because i don't hate for the sake of hating, or can deal with slightly less polys/texture resolution in CoD2 360 as opposed to the pc version, etc etc.

but honestly, i thought the games all looked great, i didn't play Kameo but i watched someone else play it, and it looked great, and King Kong looks even better.

and as far as COD2 goes, it looks just as good as Battlefield 2 and other games if you ask me, and it was a lot of fun to play.

what is the japanese launch lineup like? maybe getting the thing modded or getting an import one will be the way to go some time down the road? the US lineup is too.. american?

I'm unimpressed simply because it's sort of in the uncanny valley of video games. It's stuck between the "video game" look (like Quake, played at 320x240... ahh, so pixellated yet still so clear) and the realistic look. The graphics are looking almost as good as PC games, but with no "retro" factor and no "WOW!" factor it's just lame.

Beta demos are MEANT to show off a system's capabilities. And thgat's especially true on a system that encourages using a standard API and not assembly hackcode which can be optimized per-game.

I played the CoD 2 demo and I thought the same thing. But you have to remember, the X360 is mainly targeting mainstream gamers; people who do not have a computer that can run games like those will buy it. It's all about the show case.

From a graphical perspective, consoles have never impressed PC gamers. PC gamers have been gaming at 1280x1024 and higher for years now with the right equipment.

I've never been a hardcore PC gamer, but when I see console gamers gushing over 720p support, I have to laugh a bit.

If the PS3 can genuinely run at 1080p with all kinds of graphical tricks without massive slowdown, then I'd be impressed. Even high-end PCs have trouble going that high with all the goodies turned on.

From what I played of Cod2 at Wal-Mart I was not impressed. It seemed like another bland WW2 shooter, with pretty graphics.

However, this only a first impression.

Basically the graphics didn't "wow" me over - it's not the leap I expected, however if the games are good then I wont give a fuck. These are early games, and I know the 360 has a wealth of potential in terms of graphics and power. I hope the extra power of the system is used not only for better graphics, but for more realistic physics. Basically it's just a waste of processing power if we're getting new shiny games with awesome graphics that don't really do much more than the previous generations games. While I do want better graphics, i also at the same time want better gaming experiences.

ps: Console gaming>PC gaming (and i play both)

Well I'm off to play Mario Kart DS.

I'm not writing off the entire system.

I'll judge from the goddamn demo if I want to, and it looked like shit. Textures...goodness the textures. Bad.

Until they can get games photorealistic, graphics don't matter. I don't care how many sparks are flying around at once all emitting HDR lighting data, if the characters look like they were modelled by a 5-year-old the appearance is ruined. And yes, more physics-y games would be nice. I'm betting we'll see tons of physics-based games on the Revolution (RDKF, anyone?)

Funny, I watched the demo and couldn't help but think how undeserving the hype is for the 360 version.

If you like choppy framerates by all means go buy it.

I saw some shooting game at eb, it's the army game or gay whatever it is, anyhow...it looked like something the ps2 or xbox could produce, but maybe a little smidge better. Not worth all the money as far as I'm concerned. I'm gonna get a DS in a month or so and will be playing MK online, that's got me excited.

I dunno, I'm a little underwhelmed too. I'm pulling my preorder tomorrow. Basically, I think I'll wait for a price drop.

I don't think the launch is horrible or anything, but I'm thinking I might be better off putting that money towards the current gen. There's still plenty of games I want to get, and my money is better put there. Plus, I wanna get an AES finally, and a consolized Atomiswave is gnawing at the back of my brain (and forget supergun suggestions! I crave consolized coolness).

At first, I wanted to be an early adopter for once, but what can I say? I changed my mind.

But before we all get our panties in a twist about a horrible lineup at launch for this thing, let's all harken back to the PS2 lauch. Man, that was pure shit, yet no one says so now. What about the N64? Pliotwings and Mario 64... And that was it.

C'mon, sure the 360 isn't looking phenomenal, but it sure doesn't suck, either.

I played or saw running almost all X360 launch games in a Microsoft Show in Switzerland, all games was running at 720p and most still had aliasing.

DOA4 and RR6 are great, but nothing really new.

Perfect Dark Zero, very good, except for some framedrops by heavy actions.

Kameo, good game. (I played already at TGS2005)

PGR3, better gameplay than the 2 (thanks god), but had so much aliasing I could tell it was like GT4 on PS2!

The games were good, the problem is they have some technical problem that they souldn't have.

If I ever get one it will be 1-2 years from now when there are lots of games to try.
By then it may look so pale compared to my PC I may lose interest all together though, especially if it doesn't drop to like 200 bucks by then...


If you guys notice though, all the regular xbox and ps2 game commercials are less than good looking now IMO... they look "PS1 'ish" now after seeing the 360 in person. Its a jump forward for sure....but knowing MS, they are going to screw all the first unit buyers....and I would rather just watch it unfold this time.... My bet is on Nintendo still, my least favorite company...but I have that feeling about it this time around....provided the number of games improves over the cube.

No, the problem is with rabid fanboys of other systems liking to shit on other folks enthusiasm for a new console. Its like reading posts over at GameFaqs.

I could start a thread about how impressed I was with [insert 360 game here] and the trolls would come out of the woodwork making all sorts of ignorant remarks and claims that they can't back up. Besides the lazy sports games appearing on the 360, no current console could touch what the 360 is doing in standard def. Once you factor in High Def you can totally forget about the competition.

The bottom line is that a bunch of folks are excited over the new console launch and it just happens to be Microsoft. Come time for Rev and PS3 launch it will be the same thing over again. I look forward to both those consoles as well.

The one big blunder I see is the "Core system."

They should have done away with that and gone with the hard drive as a standard feature.

Eventually the price is going to be lowered on the Premium Package (when the Revolution or PS3 are readied for release,) the Core System isn't going to be sold any longer, Microsoft is going to push those detachable HD's on to those that don't have them, and they're finally going to give the green light to developers wishing to take advantage of the HD when programming their games.

Systems should come with a standard HD, as much as I don't like the idea of console games needing to be patched is seems like it's necessary this day and age... especially given the fact that so many games will lean heavily on the online component.

I'm going to pick up a HDTV sometime... when I do I'll pick up a 360, but that'll be after it has many more games under its belt. Maybe in three or four months.

Agreed. If $100 breaks the deal because one can't afford the $400 version, perhaps one should rethink spending the money on a gamesystem in the first place. Besides, its not like games make us earn money, intellectually improve our brain to earn more money, or give us more skills to earn more money.

I totally agree with this. MS should have made the HD standard. After reading Magician's post about what the Oblivion developers said about this just confirms it. Hopefully they will eventually phase out the core model or atleast make it come standard with a HD.


Also, another mistake I think they made was getting the finalized dev kits to the developers so late in the game. Since they insisted in launching the system this year, they really are lucky to have as many games available at launch as they do. I imagine the next wave of games to hit will be much more impressive than the launch lineup.



Hopefully Nintendo and Sony will give their developers finalized hardware far more in advance than MS. Then again some think Sony is still planning a PS3 spring-time launch in Japan...

It's cool that you are excited about the new system, but the launch titles are all tired sequels and, derivative 'original' titles. Seriously. The reason you can't (and haven't) comeback on that point is because it is absolutely true.

Anyway, aren't you the one that is so excited about Kameo: a 3D adventure game where you have to use certain abilities to progress through the game? That's the sort of game that wouldn't even raise an eyelid if it was released six months after a console's launch. The fact that people even look at it now just goes to highlight how weak the other launch titles are.

The way you talk about Kameo makes me think your trying to convince yourself that it worth buying a new console for, not anyone else...

Fair points. For me, I have nothing againt Microsoft, but I am sorely unimpressed with the 360 software so far. Hardware wise it clearly has potential. Simple as that. For the next generation I want to see some next generation games. I hope the 360 will deliver the goods later, but at the moment it isn't doing it for me.

That is fine, but I want to be excited by something for a good reason, not just because this is powerful new hardware. Give me some original, truly next generation games and I will be there. Kameo? Absolutely not. This wouldn't interest me if it was released on the PS2 or GC, and would probably go largely un-noticed if it was.

i played kameo and loved it, i also played pdz and loved it, i also played pgr3 and loved it.

over the last year ive played about 70 or 80 games on various systems and maybe about 10% of them grabbed me (made me want to play more than an hour).

besides i would be pumped for it even if it was six months into the machines lifespan, i was excited about zelda:ww and mario sunshine both of which hit the cube long after its launch.

That is pretty fucking shitty.

Well one way MS could overcome this whole Core system bullshit is to just put a notice on the front of the game boxes saying that a hard drive is required. Of coarse that will also bring the 360 even closer to the dreaded PC side of things that console gamers seem to loathe so much.

I understand that you love those games, but I can't quite understand why. Maybe if you went into some more detail there then I would.
