with oblivion that would have cemented it imo.

youve got a good range of sports games for those interested, a platformer, lots of good fps, good racers, etc.

looks like a big portion of them will be 8+ titles too.

please list what came out with the machine if you think another launch was better...

MS is claiming 3 million 360s sold (to retailers I'm guessing) in 3 months. With a decent launch line up, and some decent follow up games, they may just pull that off.

I'm still not interested as the majority of launch titles are genres I have no interest in. Sports, racing, 1st person shooters and 3D platformers. No thanks. Shooters, fighting games and Sakura Taisen would be deal breakers for me.

The DOA series is OK IMO, but not a fighting game worth buying a system for. Maybe if I ever buy a 360 it'd be something I'd want to pick up cheap. Definitely not $60 like they want for it at launch.

Hell, I can't think of any domestic game worth $60. I pay those prices for Japanese games, since that's where my babies are born (fighters, shooters and Sakura Taisen) and I have no other choice. Some of the fighters get released in the US, but not as many and not always the ones I want.

360 early adopters should be happy, I just won't be one of them.

Well, the launch is quite good... but hmm... somehow i liked the french SNES launch better... iirc

Has any system ever launched with an RPG? I always think that RPG lovers get left out for a long time while waiting on a traditional RPG.

Dreamcast got evolution thing and PSP got Garghav part 1. There has been one on PSX too but it was so horrible i can t remember the name

RPGs never make a launch window. Every single system had a little trickle of them start maybe a few months afterwards or something. And when I say trickle, I mean it. Like 1 or 2 little known RPGs that are ok at best. The 360 would've been the first console I've ever seen with a big RPG name making its launch window. However, with the delay, it will simply have to settle with being one of the earliest-released big name RPG releases on a new system. As much as the Playstation got touted for RPG releases, each system took a while before they really actually came in. However, the bigger named ones would be hyped before the system actually launched, but not come out for at least another year after launch.

The launch lineup is mostly English-designed games. Granted they are quality stuff but I need Japanese-designed games too.

That's simply because of territory stuff. It's always ends up that your launch lineup has more games where the console stems from. One of the reasons why most often Japanese consoles get released in Japan earlier than other places, because their launch lineup is almost all Japan-centric which then devs make decisions on what gets localized overseas and more devs, in other countries, finish their projects. Not to mention, the launch lineup we see is mainly the launch lineup for the States so we know what we're getting.

It wont be making the US/Euro launch, but I think I read somewhere that FROM are trying to get Enchant Arm (RPG made by the same guy behind the Otogi games) ready for the japanese launch.

I was just wondering in general. I have no interest in Oblivion or whatever. I just couldn't remember a big name RPG ever launching with a system. I don't think I can ever call a launch even close to great until this happens.

I remember waiting for Phantasy Star II back in the day. I wanted that game so badly my balls ached. I tried to fill the void with Super Hydlide, which was easily one of the worst Genesis games ever.

RPG players definitely get the shaft with new consoles.

They do, but one does have to understand, they do comprise of some of the longest games to make, these days. Part of it is that they are longer than the average game and demand generally more stuff to entertain people over a long period of content. Actually, the elder scrolls games consist of the highest amount of content packed into a release (they literally throw the kitchen sink in there). However, even the super-linear, lead you on Japanese RPGs (of the ones that do) still have to entertain you for ~20 or more hours. Each part has to be tested, as well. When you consider the time it usually takes to make and test, they always take the longest. Thus if you even consider if devs get the kits at the same time, those RPG makers will be bringing up the rear.

Bethesda gets a little boost here, though. Even though the 360 has made fundamental hardware changes from the last model, the software library still has them coding in familiar territory, thus their simultaneous PC/360 development can still happen on schedule. To a certain degree, because they could code the game so early (PC-side) and be guarranteed a software library with which to easily port a great deal with little effort, is about the only way such an early release is possible. The other examples had to delay their progress, in starting, until they got the new hardware, since they did not have some familiar software library with which to work with. Or even much of a library at all. So in a way, this multi-hardware platform library idea, by MS, is the best way to get your stuff out faster. Any other current way will delay the RPG releases, unless you purposely delay your system launch until they arrive. Obviously, the setup doesn't make everything work right away (considering hardware differences), but it saves quite a few months of work.

Is the 360 version of Call of Duty 2 the same as the PC version?

I don't know about you guys, but I'm not that amped for the X360 release. Nothing really lights me fire.

I can get CoD2 and Quake 4 for my PC. I have FEAR and Civ 4 which are also just awesome.

On the console front, there are a slew of good games like Shadow of the Colossuss, Guitar Hero, Dragon Quest VIII, and Gunstar Heros.

I just really don't see a want/need to buy an X360 right now.

to be expected id say. launch/first gen games will always have trouble stacking up in the gameplay/innovation areas and so i dont blame you for being more pumped for DQ8 for example (nice game btw :) make sure to put a thread up if you need hints).

im pumped for the launch coz i love the excitement that comes with a new console and this ones launch seems solid all round imo.

Why yes, yes it is- no Big Red One here. Which is a good thing, I think. Looks really nice and is supposed to be near identical to a high-end PC running the PC version.

My one big remaining question regarding the launch lineup- how's King Kong? Anyone play a version at E3 or anything? At first I just assumed it was a shameless EA movie cash-in, but then I read that Peter Jackson refused to let EA make it since he didn't like their work on the LotR games, so he went to Ubi Soft instead. Gotta admit that the video I've seen of it looks pretty solid.

For first gen games it really is a solid line up. Nothing really exciting or out of the ordinary but that is to be expected.
Im disapointed that we dont get a sequel to Phantavision though.....maby for the ps3 launch :smirk: :kekeke:

I know it's a cliche, but I prefer the US Dreamcast launch. That one felt like it had something for everyone, and about 3 games I was dying for, which this launch (to me) doesn't. I hate sports games, and I hate FPS. I like racers, but it feels like that's practically all that's left.

I saw the 360 demo at Best Buy yesterday, and the graphics were nice, so I'm sure I'll want one as soon as there are games I'm interested in.

Looks solid to me. About half of those titles don't really interest me at all, but I'm pretty psyched about Quake 4, Gun, Project Gotham Racing 3, Call of Duty 2, Perfect Dark Zero, and Condemned.

You're both a little off- the 64 launched with two games- just Mario 64 and Pilotwings.

Only 4 of the 19 games listed are original titles and one of those is based on a movie remake. Xbox 360: Attack of the Sequels. I'm definately waiting to buy one.

Last I heard DOA 4 was pushed back to 12/1, both EB and Gamestop have adjusted their release dates. But they could be wrong. Sucks about Oblivion getting delayed.

Beelze, I know you really like the X-Box and FPS a lot, but calling this the best launch line-up ever is ridiculous.

My first launch purchase of a system and it also turned out being the biggest let down. Less than a year later I had a Saturn, and less than a year after that, a PS1.

So you had 3 really great games... for 3-6 months where only shit floated out of the N64 sewer pipes.

I take that back, I actually enjoyed KI Gold, which was available for X-Mas the launch year I think.

MK Trilogy was not a launch title. The other two were the only ones to make launch.

I think some people are forgetting about Condemned - the crazy psyco killer FPS from Sega. Apparently the A.I is very intellegent (for mad people). It's not a "shot ask questions later" FPS, it looks more 1 on 1 style showdowns.

Pst while we are on the topic of launch games on the N64, didn't Shadows of the Empire make it out fairly quickly? It was one of my early favorites, played it a year ago however and it hasn't aged well at all.

The N64 launch while containing 2 good games, was barely what I would call a "best launch line up."

MKT, Wayne Gretzky, Shadows of the Empire and KI Gold also all made it for X-Mas of '96, but nothing else did. And only SM64 and Pilotwings were classics. KIG and Shadows were fun, but that's about it. Definitely not classics.

Lots of games, but pretty much mothing that interests me right now, and certainly nothing that makes me want to buy a new console.

I am currently loving GT4 on my PS2, and have just reserved NGBC and Sega Rally 2006.

I remember the PS2 launch in Japan had a really poor release lineup. I bought Tekken Tag and Silpheed with mine. I don't even play Tekken, and only ever fired that game up a couple of times... I still bought the console though.

Did it? It felt like a lot longer. I was working part time at blockbuster at the time, and everyday little kids would come up and ask, "did more games come out yet?" like a new release video game was going to appear Sunday morning or something. I remember hearing one parent tell a crying girl (looked like a girl anyway), "Why the hell did I buy that thing for you?" And more than one parent asked me if they could play SNES games on the N64. One even asked if Playstation games would work on it. It seemed like forever-- an endless string of stupid questions-- before more games came out.

N64 was launched in Sept right? According to IGN, Cruisin was released December 6, 1996.

Like someone else mentioned, I think the US Dreamcast launch was the best. It did have a game for everyone and what seemed like the best football game ever (at the time that is. I went back and played NFL2K and it was utter crap.)

I would say the best launch lineup would be the DC like some others have said.

The 360 lineup looks excellent for gamers, since most are mainstream and not into niche titles.

While comparable, it still doesn't match the DC lineup.

I thought the PSP had a pretty good launch considering that the best titles on the handheld to this date were released then. It showcased the handheld's capabilities well enough and had enough variety of games to satisfy different people, including a fighting game and a puzzle game. The 360 has pretty much nothing but FPS and sports games in comparison.

I won't lie, I've never followed launch line-ups until recent years so it's hard for me to make a call, but the fact of the matter is, there is nothing even remotely new or interesting in the 360's launch. I'm sure I could google some other console's launch titles and make my case, but it'd be pointless considering that it comes down to a matter of opinion in the end. As I said, I know you like FPS so this is probably the best launch line-up ever in your eyes, but if you look at it more objectively you'll realize it's far from it.

The truth is, every launch line-up sucks. It doesn't take until at least 6 months after release until we start seeing great titles on a new console. Then again, the PSP had a fairly good launch, but that's pretty much all we've had thus far.
