NG.com Consumer Reports thread:

I figured this MIGHT turn out to be a decent thread that gets bumped regularly. The core of this BBS seems to be roughly of the same income, age, and lifestyle, so I figured we could post our thoughts/reactions/opinions on various products to give people an idea about things they themselves might be wondering about (i.e.- Consumer Reports). For instance:

Schick Quattro Power- I recieved this a freebie from a rep or something at my workplace, but if I had been given a chance to try it, or seen a review of it, I'd buy this razor anyway. It has 4 blades instead of the 3 my Giilette Mach 3 razor has (I had no problerms with this razor either, fyi) and using a single AA battery, the razor vibrates. Aside from the obvious sex toy jokes and references, the vibration and 4 blades has given me the most comfortable and closest shave I've ever uh...experienced? It doesn't pull on your facial hair at all, and you can barely even feel the razors against your skin as you use it.

The two downsides to this razor that I've noticed in the two weeks I've been using it is that hair seems to clog and get stuck in the blades more often and more stubbornly than other razors I've used, and the moisturizing/conditioning/whatever it is strip at the bottom of the four razors has been "peeling" over time, its very weird but doesn't seem to affect anything.

Overall: The best razor I've ever used.

interesting. though i read about 40 reports in various mens magazines and online sites saying the mach3 is still the closest shave available, i've always wanted to try this gay looking instrument.

Right now I'm in a product test for new razors before they hit the market. Right now I'm testing a new Schick razor with 6 blades! It also vibrates as well. I thought it would give me the most extreme shave ever but I think it is pretty sucky. Mach 3 is the best I've used so far.

I love flavored seltzer water. Mostly because it has no sugar, no artifical sweeteners, the flavor is quite acceptable, and best of all; its VERY carbonated. I can enjoy carbonated drinks, whether straight or with alcohol/juice, and its so cheap. This way, I won't gain alot of pounds and inches around the waist, get tooth decay, or diabetes with sugared soda nor get cancer from sucralose or acesulfame potassium in diet drinks.

To make clear, seltzer water consists of nothing more than carbonated water and natural flavors.

Note: Quanine only exists in Tonic water, NOT seltzer.

Perrier: Best and most authentic tasting seltzer for sure. Great to have during dinner. It is however rarely on sale, and is expensive at about $1.50 a 1L bottle.

Adirondack, a 2nd favorite brand, is slightly less expensive than the above. Tastes slightly better than Polar, below.

Polar seltzer water, is a main staple of my and my wife's beverage intake. It is cheap, can be had for almost $0.21 a can if purchased in 24-packs for $5.00 at local bargain markets. Can be found often under $1.00 per 2 Liter bottle

Can anyone reccommend a good electric shaver?

I'm tired of buying replacement blades and in general I just want a fast shave

I can't shave with a blade. Shaving with the grain isn't close enough, and shaving against the grain makes me break out like you wouldn't believe. Electrics are really my only option.

My Norelco is the first shaver I've owned that didn't tear my face up. I tried a Braun foil shaver, and my face hurt like hell. Never adjusted to it. The Norelco gives me a really close shave and has adjustable blades so you can get just the right amount of closeness.

They're not cheap, but they're worth it.

I would recommend the flat end type, not the "Tri-force models".
Braun brand is most certainly the finest electric shavers, and that's all I have been using for the last 10 years. I would also recommend using an aftershave lotion. I've been using this Loreal SPA Men's line of facial lotion and face soap. Works real well, and cuts down razor burn to zippo.

I also use Mach 3. Got a razor kit free from Gillette many years ago. Hell I buy 4 pack of blades for the thing every year, they last so long. Hell even my wife has stolen it for her legs until she got one of her own. Women, meh.

I've had a Remington R845 for years now, three floating blades, and it still works great. Got it cheap at WalMart a while ago (about $45) and it hasn't had any problems. Keeps a charge for quite a while too. Looking at WalMart's site, here are two Remingtons in that range:

As far as I'm concerned, they're reliable and well made electric razors.

Electrics: I've had a cheap model Norelco, two Remington microscreens, and a Braun Activator. The Activator is what I currently use and is easily the best.

Traditional: Mach 3, all the way. Nothing has matched them in my experience. (I haven't tried a Quattro)

I recomend not shaving and growing some man hair.

But if you decide to shave, I also enjoy the Quatro. But then again I dont really mind using disposable double blade ones either.

On a related note Skintimate Moisturizing Aftershave Gel is good stuff. Cuts down on the razor burn and bumps and the general irritation (soaks into your skin quick and kind of numbs it).

Thumbs.

I use a Mach 3 and it's been the best for me. Electric razors don't do it since my hair is so damn curly that even my facial hair stays very close to flat against the skin. I can only shave against the grain too and at that only every 4th or 5th day without tearing my face up.

I have been using the Quattro too. It gives a nice clean shave, although like Buro said the blades seem to get hair clogged in them easily. It also seemed like they went dull pretty quickly. Normally this wouldn't be a huge deal but replacement blades are like $10 bucks.

I prefer Gatorade Propel over Powerade Option. (dunno, don't want this to just be a razor thread)

I'm exactly the opposite. Option is cheaper (here at least) and it doesn't taste as fruity or sugary as Propel does.

I have lately though taken to drinking regular Dasani water (regular as opposed to the new flavored variety) as the other brands are either way too filtered or oily (Arrowhead is disgusting).

I recomend Tap Water. I give it an A+. Refreshing.

I cannot tell the difference in any bottled water.

fiji water is tops.

the blue plastic that desani bottles are made out of are not recyclable, at least they weren't last i heard, so i've tried to stay away from it.

Being diabetic, I'm forced to measure out the carbohydrates in my meals in order to gauge how much insulin I want to use.

Considering this is kind of a low carb craze right now, I'm lucky because I have so many additional options.

If you want healthy, great tasting snacks go for South Beach Diet snack bars, they are like granola bars but without an excessive amount of carbs and calories. My favorites are peanut butter and chocolate.

Nabisco brought out some sugar-free oreos which are amazing...but a bit more expensive than your average cookie considering they only come in small boxes. I recommend giving them a try as well, I love'em.

What is the difference between the Mach 3 and the Mach 3 Turbo?

I have the Turbo, and I think it gives a damn fine shave, but i'm not so sure it's different from my old regular Mach 3.

the absolute closest shave possible comes from any norelco lotion dispensing razor. period. beats the mach 3.

i used to have a norelco lotion dispensing razor ... the battery burnt out in about a year because i used it on the way to work and left it in the car day-to-day in 120+ degree heat.

but, in the shower [where you should be shaving, anyways] absolultely nothing beats those electric beasts.

foil razors claim to be the closest shave, but there's a period of ADJUSTMENT ---that not many get through--- during which time your face gets eaten alive. plus, a dry shave isn't ever as clean or cool feeling as a wet shave.

if you're going to stick with a razor, i'd suggest soaking a towel in STEAMING hot water then slamming it on your face for 30 seconds to open up your pores. your hair, coarse or curly as it may be, slips right out with razor after that.

otherwise, just shave in the shower for gods sake. the steam works the same way, only better.

if you prefer the lotion/cream route, i still find nothing works better than barbasol --- so long as you precondition your face with a bit of oil. for the best stuff, check out www.anthony.com

their mint oil preconditions your face quite well. works great, especially under your chin/down your neck, where most guys seem to overlook.

I personally use a chainsaw, but if my blade is dull a belt sander can be a reasonable substitute. Sometimes I just let wild dogs bite the hair from my face.

point is, some people NEED different products/treatments.
i could shave quickly and with no products but EDGE shave gel ... but i'd break out and the shave would look like shit.
not very appealing to the opposite sex.

Ahahah, you're right. Some people have sensitive skin, I know. Just razzing you guys. Personally, I use an old Gilette double blade & Edge gel. I have tried the Mach 3 (got it for free in the mail on my 18th b-day, long time ago :crying: ), but it really didn't work any better for me. In fact, I've noticed that the blades became dull rather quickly, and I get a better shave from my old 2-blade anyway. And the replacements are waaay expensive.

But that's just me, everyone's face is different.

Mach 3 worked nice, but I just can't do razors. Braun never dissappoints.

I thought I was the only person that shaved in the shower. Well at least I know I am not some shaving odd ball now.

pretty much any brand of canned spaghetti with meatballs is FUCKING GOOD. i eat it for breakfast lunch and dinner. avoid the no meatball version at all costs.

I don't even use shave gel, I use the excess shampoo froth from my scalp.
Cheap? Fuck yeah. I have a much cuter girlfriend now than when I used to spend a lot on that shit, so I just don't know.

Even I don't shave with disposables, that's crazy. Last time I did that I had to walk around with a whole sheet of TP on my neck to stop the bleeding from the cuts I got.

I can't shave with disposables (not sharp enough) or electrics, I use the Mach 3. It is fantastic.

I changed deodorants. I now use Gillette Power Stripe. I've been told it is fresh and fantastic. My pits got tired of my old deodorant, this new one is the cat's vagina.

I would talk about my fabric softener but I don't want to sound like a fairy.

I use Right Guard PowerStripe on occasion. It has a nice scent, and it's a good anti-perspirant.

Most days however, I just use Axe body spray. Axe is pretty good, but the scent doesn't quite last all day. It lasts longer if you also spray in on the inside of your clothes.

Old Spice has never failed me.

I forgot all about Old Spice. That is some really good deodorant. I used to use that a lot back in the day, then slowly forgot about it over time. God knows why.

my deoderant of choice is: RIGHT GUARD Xtream sport invisable solid, "clean impact" sent.

It's the only deoderant that A) works on my funky pits B) dosen't smell awful itself and most importantly C) I'm not allergic to.

I know that there's a lot of better brands out there and I probably tried them at some point but I've had to stop using them at some point, because I started having an allergic reaction.




The only bottled water that I regularly drink is a regional brand called Sparkletts. The company that bottles it is based in Anaheim CA and is carried in California, Nevada and possibly Arizona and Utah. I dig it because the water tastes... I donno... "cleaner." It dosen't have that nasty plastic or oily or metallic tang that other bottled waters have and it tends to be cheaper, almost by 50%, than the name brands. The only problem is finding the stuff, the only convience stores that stocks it here is a local chain called Terribles and grocery stores that will only carry it on request.

Wow, I didn't know Sparkletts was still being made. That is pretty good water. Haven't seen it in my area in quite awhile.

SHAVER

I've never shaved with a blade in my life. Instead I used a so-so shaver for my first few years, then 3 different Norelcos over the past 9 years along with a beard/burns trimmer.

Norelco does a good enough job, although I probably wouldn't recommend it for the person who needs to shave more than once a day.

Among Norelcos, I recommend the old fashion (now cheaper) models over the new ones that try to add extra quirks to the blades.

This is a great idea, but I recommend a tweak:

Start a new thread for each product, otherwise it's going to be hard as hell to avoid confusion/searches-for-relevant info.

I encourage people to start more of these threads.

I would add a prefix to any future thread title "Consumer Reports: " so that people know you're asking for the same opinions.

That's a bad idea. So Unrealted would be full of about a million threads with one or two replies each... and it would look like:

Well, I hope people keep shavers/blades together...

but if things got out of control (like polls), we'd have to adjust things. I debated adding a warning, but I guess I should've done that.

I did think of this problem (too many posts to get a clear idea/consensus) but I didn't see any other more effective method. But we already have several threads on the same things over and over (Home Theater/Plasma, LCD TVs, CD players, headphones, monitors, etc etc). Its too bad you can't have multiple sections to one thread.

A Best Buy rep told me that in terms of LCD/Plasma quality, Sony is tops because of their above-average audio components on their sets, but otherwise the top brands were:

Sony, Samsung, Sharp, Panasonic


And that the following brands were middle of the road or poor:

Phillips, Westinghouse, JVC(the 40" set they had on display looked like ass), Toshiba


Probably somewhere around the end of Janurary, mid-February, I'm going to be selling the 36" Sony Wega I have and picking up a 37" LCD/Plasma. Any thoughts recommendations?

Granted, Sony equipment tends to be the best in picture/sound quality but, on the other hand, their stuff isn't very durable under real world conditions. I've been very happy with my Sharp (tube) TV, they have consistantly good quality. Panasonic used to be crap/bottom-tier a few years ago but I guess the've improved their Q/C over time. I haven't had a chance to use any Samsung stuff, so I'm not sure about them.

In terms of picture quality Panasonic has a few sets better then Sony.
