I picked this up today and I have to admit i'm a bit disappointed. Nothing really special here but the tournament mode is a rip on VF4Evo.
So, got soul caliber 3?

Sad to say I'm more interested in the OST than the game.
I might pick it up this weekend.
I'm interested in the create-a-fighter mode thing, but otherwise I'll probably rent it some weekend when I remember the game even exists.
The reviews say that it isn't that much different from SCII gameplay-wise. I knew Namco should have just held it off until the next generation... :oh_no: I'll pass and keep my Xbox version of SCII until some real fighters come out for the 360...
Damn, I didnt even know this came out yet, i thought you guys were joking. Ah well, 2 is still great to me.Quote:

i'm glad i bought ninja gaiden black instead.
Ninja Gaiden Black(original as well) is the only good xbox game so you should be proud. A friend of mine bought it and says it's great, that friend also purchased FFXI for the PC so I can no longer take his word for anything.Quote:

Are there movie endings for the characters, or is it that cheap lame-drawing-and-text-ending thing again? I miss the endings from Soul Edge, where you could affect the outcome by entering a command at the right time.

Soul Calibur: Third Strike!
LOL
Like I said, Namco should have just waited for the next generation instead of crapping it out this gen, and for the PS2 only, when the multiplatform SCII strategy worked wonders. :oh_no:Quote:

One of my friends is all gung-ho on getting this game so that he can get practice & enter tournaments and such. I think i'll have to tell him about this thread. Might as well stick to SCII from the way it sounds.
I was a pretty huge fan of both Soul Blade and Soul Calibur. Soul Calibur is probably my all-time favorite fighter (2D or 3D) and is one of my 5 favorite games ever.
Which is why SC II was such a big disappointment. To me it felt like the same game only more unbalanced. If SC III is the same way I'll probably pass on it. :(
It does make me want to go back and play the DC version though. :D

I wont say that it plays like SC2 b/c there are subtle gameplay changes that have been made to seperate the two games. Plus the moveset changes are very apparent. Im still not impressed with it at all though, the whole series just feels so "masher friendly". And I know SC purists will ride my ass and tell me that I just dont know how to play it but the way advantage/disadvantage works in this game just doesnt make sense. Its not a bad game, just not my cup of tea.
O.
Actually, the coolness behind the original Soul Caliber on the DC is that it was a launch title and the graphics, at the time, were amazing along with the decent gameplay. I've told other people this, the DreamCast had the best US launch line up of any system in my opinion. There was literally a game for everyone.Quote:

So, I guess Ninja Gaiden Black will be the next purchase, never did finish the first one, will have to get back into it......
I'll skip SC3 and wait for the rumored X360 version, or the 4th one. I got a demo from SC3 and it's graphicaly a lot worse than SC2 on GC or Xbox...

I got it yesterday and think it's great. I also bought Soul Calibur 2 on release and played it enough to unlock one character, because I thought it sucked. While it's true that the game is more of a masher than such games as Tekken even, it's better in a way because those who play casually can have fun while the elitists can learn the move lists, frame advantages, etc. Some of the new stages are downright gorgeous (final stage and Egyptian stage rock), the gameplay is slightly faster, and movelists have been changed drastically (depsite what some people are saying).
For example, Ivy now changes her weapon to whip form with B+K, whereas the input had been qcb for the previous two games. Also, after an attack, she actually keeps the whip form! This is fuckin huge, because she would always revert to sword form after an attack or knockdown before. Kilik has evolved into a combo-oriented speed demon as opposed to the ranged poker playstyle of his in the previous games. Other characters have been given upgrades as well, such as the separated Nightmare and Siegfried sharing only a few similarities but a ton of differences. While there is no single player arcade mode, which sucks, the character depth and changes makes it feel like a whole new game, which it should. Besides, where else can you have a fight between Jesus and Dante?
I think the series is intended to have 2 separate play levels, both of which are enjoyable. Newbies or casual players can pick up Mitsurugi, slam some buttons, and he'll probably pull a few flashy moves.Quote:

As far as III being a little underwhelming, I can't really disagree. There are a few tweaks that are subtle but really important in that they balance the game better, though- moves were added, subtracted, or altered for every character, and the guard impact system was tightened up. the balance still isn't perfect, but it's better than it was.
Me, too. I just hope that there's a great fighting game soon for the 360... and no, Dead or Alive 4 and Rumble Roses XX doesn't count... :oh_no:Quote:

Namco seriously needs to rework this series.
It's hard for me take a fighting game that doesn't get an arcade release seriously.
Good point. Then again, not much of anything is getting an arcade release anymore.Quote:

I don't know what happened with this franchise. Soul Caliber is/was great. I just wonder why I thought that. It seems like one of those when there's nothing else to play type situations. I only think this is because I bought SCII the day it was released and took it back the next day. It just didn't do anything for me. I figured if I had to play a 3D fighter it better be Virtua Fighter or Tekken.
I prefer Soul Calibur over Tekken though.
At least it's a true 3D fighter with 8-way run and whatnot, Tekken is just a 2D game with sidesteps.

2 hookswords or one looong assed fucking Nodachi type sword

....Im gonna have to pass on this recycled shitpile. Otherwise, Namco can have my wallet and take what they think they deserve should they meet the above-listed critera.

Namco also seems to have tightened up the inputs needed to perform moves. Certain high-damage combos with Kilik require more precise joystick motions now, and so do his flashier parries. Nice changes, though they are pretty small.
Because the worldwide sales were the best for the PS2 version, the GameCube version having sold the best only in the US thanks to Link.Quote:

Played it. It's pretty good, but yes, it is more of the same. I don't know how the graphics compare to SCII on the PS2, but there are noticably less polys on this game when compared to the GC version of SCII. The characters are pretty much exactly the same from the last game. The backgrounds are very cool however, there's one called the lost cathedral that is breathtaking. Character creation mode is pretty cool, but unfortunately you have to unlock a lot of stuff from story mode. For example, they give you 4 different female faces to choose from at the beginning, but there are at least 8 total. You have to unlock the rest.
Overall, not a bad game, but they could have tweaked it more.
Two inaccuracies to start, right off- there are more polys in this than in SCII on PS2 (of course there were more in the GC version of SCII. There was also superior anti-aliasing). And the characters are ALL re-draws, and all have new moves. Yes, they look very similar, but they're most definitely NOT "exactly the same as the last game."Quote:

I can sum up this game in one word...
Meh..
The changes are interesting, and the graphics are ok. It may just be my cheap TV but some of the stages look very cloudy. Not sure if that was what they were going for but It's kind of annoying. There is no arcade mode but you can do quick mode in the Arena battles and it's still the same.
The character creation mode is pretty meh as well. You have to unlock all of the stuff(clothes, faces, jobs etc). I really hate the fact that you can't really choose the weapon for your character...maybe you can in the chronicle mode, but I just don't want to bother as that part of the game seems like a waste of rom space. If I wanted a strategy game I would have gotten one.
Not worth the cash...
While the three new characters are nice, it's still not worth the price of admission. Maybe if you're a SC die hard, then you'll be very happy with this, otherwise, rent it first.
Did I not just say that I haven't played the PS2 version of Soul Calibur 2, just the GC version? What I was getting at is that the GC version of Soul Calibur 2 looks better than Soul Calubur 3 on PS2. The characters have pretty bad jagged polys. And I meant their moves are basically the same, not their looks. Sorry if I confused you.Quote:

Endings? What kind? Text? Movie?
Before anyone says, "who cares?"... I do. And we've heard about most everything else.
Haven't seen an ending yet, it was just me and my friend playing versus mode. I played around with character creation a little. I made a scantily-clad red-headed dancer chick that uses tambourines as weapons. Pretty cool. Got tired of it after about 15 rounds and turned it off. We then played 3rd strike.Quote:

I got this game yesterday but haven't opened it yet... too busy playing RE4. I've played for 5min at the store but... still loading time is a bit annoying (character select) and not certain... it could've been the screen but it seem to have that PS2 fog effect on certain stages during certain moves... haven't seen this effect in SCII... perhaps Namco had to do this in order to avoid slow downs on gameplay.... :eek_2:
