Seriously dudes, this shit pisses me off. FPS has been around about as long as 2D fighters, shooters, and beat em ups, but it's still as popular now as it was then?
Why hasn't FPS gone niche like the rest?
Is it because FPS is always taking advantage of the new technology? I just can't figure it out.
It's because ppl fucking lack imagination and it's easier to program for I'd imagine. Everything in a "First Person" POV, stuff comes at you etc. I personally hate the genre outside of a few titles here or there, but if there's ppl to satisfy the games will indeed continue to be made. I guess I hate on FPS 9 times out of 10 because it's due to it's over hyped popularity that 3rd person RGS games are the exception and not the rule. That whenever a good "Shooter" be it 2-D or 3-D gets made it's really something special because everyone wants to outdo the other guy for "Realism" or "Surrealism" in their FPS that's the greatest thing since sliced bread. :rolleyes:Quote:

Multiplayer HALO, Unreal Tournament, DOOM, etc. is a geek fest and you know that's not going to just fizzle out and die. Hell, even MTV's shining their dim spotlight on female gamers who just happen to play HALO. :spock:
FPS'ers are simply more popular than fighters, in my opinion.
I think, also, that fighters are flat-lining a bit compared to the ever-improving FPS engines and gameplay enhancements. Fighters just limp along with new characters and whatnot while FPS'ers take giant leaps in gameplay thanks to hardware improvements...as you eluded to in your post, Greg. FPS'ers are more vast.
Soul Calibur III? That's coming out soon. Is there another big-name fighter coming out soon that's worth noting? ..or really, any recent fighters?
Farcry:Instincts, Half-Life (on XBox, for Christ's sake!), DOOM3 (not the best, but damn good-looking on XBox), etc..
It just appears as if FPS'ers are thriving while fighters are looking a little bleak.

I'm not really a fan of the genre, but I had fun with South Park for the N64. Unlocking Terence and Philip was the best.
There is a much more diverse set of subgenres of fighters, shooters, beatemups, etc - with diverse gameplay mechanics. FPS games are marked by two huge subgenres within two huge subgenres (realistic or fantasy, lone wolf or squadron combat). Most all FPS games are made of the same gameplay elements: Aim and Click, headshot = more damage. There aren't yet enough gameplay variations to thin out the legions of FPS fans - so what one person likes, most all do, too. Until you have puzzleFPS, platformFPS, etc (poor examples), games out there for the FPS fans to fight over amongst themselves those fans will be a single unified army.
Also, it's a genre that has not had to endure a mutation from 2d to 3d. There are have been far more high profile beatemups in recent months compared to FPS games, it's just that, as stated earlier, there are many subgenres within the beatemup genre that we tend not to heed attention to the other styles of the same genre that don't suit our taste.
I think it's mainly because of the graphics. They are always setting the standards really as far as graphics go. The multiplayer aspects are just a bonus really. They keep the games popular until the next one comes out.
It also helps that they weren't confined to the Arcade like the ones you listed were.
I hope someone takes a massive shit into John Romero's cereal bowl.

hmm, beat em ups. i think the hibernation from '96 - somewhat recent pretty much just murderfucked them out of any chance of mainstream appeal. a few titles nearly perfected the genre in the mid 90s then they fell off the face of the earth, only to poke their head out every 2 months when the new dynasty warriors came out. if that is gonna be the staple and standard by which all beat em ups will abide then someone please chop off its fucking head next time it peaks out. put the sad beast out of its misery.
fps are mainstream because they have evolved with the times, always utilizing the latest technology while at the same time making whats there better with nearly every installment. it has only gotten better since its inception (very few, if any, genres can boast this. racing games is the only one that comes to mind.).
anyone that says differently doesnt play them.

Yeah i played fps from 1990 that are more fun than HALO, damn that game is way over-rated. I especially hate HALO 2 as it improved not a damn thing other than graphics and story scenes. Another thing I thought was gay is that they tried too hard to detail the graphics so you will see pop-up details when it gets closer. So damn retarded. What a peice of shit. All my co-workers and roomate called it the "beat-ass" and have get-togethers with linked X-boxes.
The only fps games I liked were when they first started out (ID software). Of course these were games like Doom 1 and Wolfenstein 3D and then Aliens vs Predator for the Atari Jaguar. The only newer fps I liked was Return to Castle Wolfenstein on PC. Other than that I am sick of fps now. It needs to either die or take a big ass break until they can do something different.

Until (in my mind) we have that glorious niche hardcore counter-strike fanclub, which would entail NO noobs or smacktards (they would all have to commit mass suicide or something), the FPS will keep dying, just eventually kept on the life support of technology (look at the pretty high range dynamic lighting WOO). I cannot wait for the day when I can play my FPSes online, and not have to worry about idiots. I dont care if only 500 people still play counter strike source when this happens, I still want it to happen.

In that respect FPS are becoming more and more like fighters. Since at least Quake 3 we have seen a move from involving single player campaigns to a focus on multiplayer.
When i remember Goldeneye and Perfect Dark on the N64 i do no think about the sweet single player game. Its all about the fun multiplayer sessions with friends.
Hell the battlefield series is all about online competition, the single player game is a joke. It's only useful to learn the maps and how certain vehicles handle.
Wolfenstein Enemy Territory is arguable better then the return to castle wolfenstein game itself.
At least FarCry was a step in the right direction with an impressive single player experience.

As long as there are developers out there who can make good, fun games the FPS market will stay fresh. Plus it seems with every technological gain in computing power we are also able to simply DO more things in games.
Because it is the only reason for computer gamers to buy the most expensive hardware.
X developers makes a technology/market-driven FPS so that Y GPU developer releases a more expensive and powerful GPU, so that Z gamer buys it.
It's kind of a cycle.

I love battlefield also (not vietnam, just 1942 and 2), but there is this certain satisfaction I get out of shooting someone in the head with a pump shotty, that I JUST cannot get from battlefield. I also own at counter strike (source (i suck at 1.6 and I HATE CZ), so thats another reason why I play cs. I slapped together my entire system for less than $300. It's way more than sufficient to play BF2. The only expensive issue I've yet to tackle is a good LCD monitor.
But I guess it just comes down to the online aspect appealing more to some than others. For fans of FPS games it really should be an absolute necessity by now.
Also, while I have found it CAN work, console FPS games just can't fucking touch PC ones, not with a pad, no matter what.
My video card cost $250 and that's because it was purchased from ebay, from newegg the card is ~$450. How did you build a complete pc for $300? Did you already have a case and psu?

FPS's are just as prevalent on Console, and is one of the most popular genre's. Look at the most popular things shown for the new systems.
360: Gears of War, Perfect Dark, Ghost Recon, Unreal 3, Halo 3

Revolution: Of all the games shown for it, Metroid in its "FPS type looking gameplay scheme" is what was shown.

I dunno, maybe a good bit of the population finds the genre to be incredibly fun? I dunno, I guess that MIGHT explain why it's so popular. I mean that COULDN'T possibly be the reason, could it?
My first FPS love was Zero Tolerance on Mega Drive. Played it to death in 1P first and then talked a friend into buying another copy, from then on we had months of fun with 2P matches via link cable.
I really like some FPS games, my faves are ZT, Doom, Duke Nukem 3D (PC), Quake!, Quake 3 Arena (both DC (homebrew glquake and the official Q3A release)), and a few others... I don't dig some of those current FPS games tho, they're too team-oriented for my taste, I prefer the kill-'em-all/fragfest approach.
FPS aren't niche games because, well, it's the most popular genre at the moment and will definitely stay in the focus for years to come. Sure, there are some rip-off games and others that re-use the same damn engine over and over + a bit of new eye candy on top, but well, that could be said about any genre out there.
However, I loathe FPS RPGs, real-time and fantasy is something that still gives me headaches.
