Let's sell this model, paint it green, then sell it again in red with a new saber. Yeah...
And yes, Gundam is a huge marketing ploy, but even with Wing they never seemed to have released an endless stream (in the show) of new model Gundams and Mobile Suits, nor did they change the op/ed themes on what felt like EVERY episode. SEED just takes it to entirely new levels of ridiculousness.
It doesn't matter who created the property. It's what people get used to. Take a for instance in gaming. Someone starts playing Metroid on the GCN, never playing any of the others. His idea is that Metroid is supposed to be a FPS, not a side scrolling adventure. Sure the fundamentals are the same, but the mechanics are different. Gundam 0079 and W are no different in that respect. Yes, it's easy to figure out who created Gundam and where it's origins lie, just as easy as it is to see the original Metroid. However, if it's not what you're used to or what you were exposed to first, then it's possible you'll never see the originals as the originals.
And just because you can't get over the pretty boy look, doesn't mean a series doesn't posess a decent storyline. W, while fundamentally different than 0079, does have a decent storyline IMO.
G Gundam just shits all over everything, as even the Mobile Suits are tricked out and none of the designs are of a mass produced (other than the Danish windmill thing you see at the end) model, they are all unique. And there are no New Types. If people can't accept G, more than likely these are the 2 main factors. it's still the best IMO though.
