Official HDTV gaming/DVD viewing thread

That's right, I just fucking made it official.

I tried reading the AVS forums and doing what you dicks call "research..." but I can't figure out what they're saying half the time due to the videophile jargon.

I'm looking to get an HDTV catered to both gaming and watching DVD's/HD DVD's/BluRay. I was looking to get a Samsung DLP but I read it has all sorts of lag and other miscellaneous problems when playing games.

I want a TV with a native resolution of 720p (I hear that's the best res for gaming,) and I want one with absolutely no chance of burn-in. I want it to work well with the next generation of consoles (although If I buy any of them I won't be doing so for awhile... at least until the price is lower than what it is expected to be at launch.)

DLP, LCD, CRT, Projector?

Looking for members like Thirdkind (and any others who know what they're talking about) to give me some quality feedback so there's a thread with all the info I need for easy reference - if I'm going to drop a few grand on a TV set I want to get the most bang for my buck.

I dunno about 720p being 'the best for gaming', since the only console game I know of that supports it is Soul Calibur II on the Box. All my other games that run in 480p look fucking awesome, and I'm sure the 360 stuff will blow my fragile little mind. DVDs look bad-ass too, and if you want a bigger model, Panasonic also makes a 30" and 34" as well. My DVDs look fucking amazing too.

That is tempting (a 26" widescreen for $520... I want a smaller TV as I don't have much living space), but I can't find any reviews for it. There's a user review up on cnet, but the guy got a bad set and is very bitter.

Hmm... the Sony 30" HDTV is around ~$700...

I saw that same negative review on CNET too.

Is the Sony KD-36XS955 a good choice?

Would it suffer from burn in?

DashK just got the 36XS955 (4:3) and I have the 34XS955 (16:9) And they would both be very good choices as they will give you the best picture since they are tubes...although if you want a larger size then you have to go with a projection set. Burn in wouldn't be any more of a problem than it is with a normal tube TV since it is one. I'd reccomend one, Xbox games in wide screen in 480p Like DOAU on these things is sick.

That size sounds like a perfect fit for me since my TV room isn't that large.

They aren't prone to burn in? HUD's in FPS games and other immobile shit on the screen won't burn in after a couple hours of play?

I bought this a few months ago for $800, and its been great so far.

I checked out the AVS forums before buying it and everyone who's seen it or bought it say that its pretty good for what it is. I use it as both a computer monitor and TV for my consoles. Has a native res of 720p (goes up to 1080i), lots of inputs, looks nice, and saves lots of space. My Dreamcast looks great on it, as does my computer. I'd recomment getting an RGB scart cable and a Scart -> Component adapter for all your older consoles, since S Video looks pretty bad in HD.

Only major flaw that I can think of is its built-in speakers, which make a low-yet-noticeable hissing noise. Turning off SRS (sound enhancer) lowers the noise, but its still there. It dissapears if you mute the volume. If you have all your stuff connected to an external reciever, this isn't an issue at all. I was well aware of this issue before buying the set, but it doesn't bother me much really.

Best bet for no burn in gaming is a DLP Projection set. The Samsungs are great.

Nothing will get you a better picture than a CRT, but you can only get those in 34" Widescreens at the biggest.

If you want something bigger you're going projection. DLP and LCD projection are the only ones that won't give you burn in. I prefer DLP since it can handle other resolutions better and can give you better black colors.

You're looking at about 2k for a 50" Samsung DLP right now. I wouldn't reccomend anything else.

It is Samsung's 26 widescreen with two component inputs and HDMI, much better than the others... I did alot of "research" as well and most pointed to this little beast. The best thing, weighs only 87 pounds. That is really light weight for a CRT widescreen!

The picture is amazing, dvds and gaming. It's a nice lower tier set up. I too, didn't want to blow a grand on a TV...

Considering the 36XS955... seems like a good fit.

Where would be a good retailer to pick one up? I'm not going to order something like this online.

Isn't the widescreen aspect on the 4:3 set less than an inch smaller than the one on the 16:9 set?

If yes I really don't see why I wouldn't get the widescreen version now that I think about it. Other than some old Kubrick movies pretty much all DVD's are widescreen.

buy any sony or panasonic 4:3 or 16:9 tube crt HDTV and you will be good to go for gaming and movies.

Next gen games will go widescreen. Most games of this gen are already widescreen as it is.

Heck even with the stretch modes playing 2D fighters in widescreen works out pretty well too.

This is why I got the widescreen version, sooner than you know all stuff is going to be wide and I wanted to take advantage of movies and the next gen consoles. I was kinda trying to 'future proof' myself to some extent. I asked about high def programming because the sony TVs in the XS series have built in over the air tuner and they also have the new cable card slots so you can forget about the big HDTV cable boxes. If you dont really need an over the air tuner I would suggest the Panasonic 34" widescreen set (the one with the black frame around the screen, I think its called the cinema series) as this TV can be had of under $1150 and it has 2 component inputs AND 2 HDMI inputs which I really wanted but the built in tuner on the sony is what made me spend the extra money and go for that one.

The best picture quality for a CRT Tube based tv is Sony hands down. I spent a good 3 months researching tvs and after taking back 6 sets weighing in at over 185+ pounds each, I finally settled on the Sony for the clear picture and vibrant colors.

The downside with a CRT based setup, is as I mentioned above is the weight. The overall way to go for a decent set is a nice DLP tv. The weight is usually 100 pounds or less, the picture quality on the newest chipsets are amazing and most of the newer models are ing 1080i and some 1080P. But it depends on what you wanna spend.

Fuck, why is everything so cheap in the USA? Those HD's cost like double that here...

Get this one, Dinkins. I generally don't like Sony's, but those XBR CRT's are hard to beat if picture quality is your biggest concern.

by the time everything is wide, you will long need a new TV anyway. the only thing you need to "future proof" for your HDTV is make sure it has HDMI.

DVDs are the only medium that is mainstream for widescreen now. 90% of cable channels aren't, and they won't be until 2010-2012 at least. 99% of every videogame on the planet isn't as well.

As for current gen xbox games, less than 12 support 16x9, but all support 4:3 480P. If you get a widescreen TV, you will be playing them stretched, or in a small 4:3 window, for example on the 34inch widescreen tube sets, the 4:3 window is 28inches, that's a bit small for me, since I was coming from a 32 inch set. I can tell you Halo 1 looks incredible in 36inch 480P on my set, only a Home Theatre PC running this on a bigscreen could compare.

It is also not guaranteed all 360 games will support 16x9, it will not be a standard set by msft.

Would the widescreen HD broadcasts be stretched/altered on the 4:3 TV? Would the only difference between the 4:3 and 16:9 sets when watching HD widescreen TV be the horizontal black bars on the 4:3?

hdmi needed= nope... can be converted with just an adapter. but it cant hurt to have.

12 xbox game only support 16X9? that was the most retarded thing i have ever read. a lot of xbox games support 16X9. :loco:

playing or watching any widescreen media on a 16:9 display is the the only way to go.

The widescreen shit would look the same on the fullscreen set as it does on the widescreen set (except for the horizontal black bars on the 4:3), right?
