Hurricane Katrina, a big pain in my ass.

Well this is great, I live 250 miles exactly North East from the coast of New Orleans in Mississippi. So we have no water or power now and the trees threw up every damn where. Power lines are knocked down atleast every half mile or so. Yeah I am looking to not playing Neo Geo for over week, same goes for anything else as well.

Boredem is one of my main anoyances. Luckly I atleast have a GBA handheld to play. Of course it isn't an SP so I can only play at day or use a flashlight at night. I have my laptop but in order to charge it I have to use a power inverter and hook it to my car. Atleast my phone line works as I am using the internet right now but only for 1 hour or so.

We had 2 hurricanes in the past 2 summers that hit us, this one being 4 times worse. I personally think its the climate changed due to our burning too much fucking gas and factories. This is just to odd since it happened back to back to be natural. I guess I should feel a little more fortunate though since many people near the coast were killed but then again they should have gotten the hell out though. Many of them were dumb-asses and had a Hurricane Party.

Anyone else been affected by this historic storm of the past 100s of years for the US?

Well...I didn't get my Gamecube Mario Baseball game that I paid overnight shipping for because of the storm.

However, I am not complaining, as it would be a bitch to actually live near where the storm hit and have to mess with that mess.

Be glad you are not here at all. It is the hottest part of the summer. The humidity levels in the South are Horrorendous, it is way higher than air itself. I am sweating my balls off right now in my room and it is almost 1 a.m. To fall asleep I have to load up on booze to just pass out. I think I might just get in my car and turn the AC up. I got a full tank. Oh well, time to add to the global warming, oh the irony.

My fathers friend has power in town and offered for us to use it for our convenience. He has a hot single daughter also that is really cool, hmmmm.

I used to live in Gulfport, MS. I'm so glad I don't live there right now, but I have a lot of family there and we haven't been able to contact any so far. I know Spinmaster X has family in Biloxi.. hope they're alright man..

my girlfriend lives/lived in new orleans. her house isn't flooded, but it's probably looted. her best friend's house is totally under water.

they're in memphis right now and it's hard for them to get any info because the phones are out, even cell phones, and the cops aren't even letting anyone into the city.

i was supposed to move in with her today, but that's obviously not gonna happen.

I fear that my grandfather, father, uncle, and pets are dead. I fear that my house is destroyed and all my possessions gone. I fear my truck's got a huge oak tree on top of it. Yeah, I realize what is going on. I am not heartless you know. Life does go on and its best to just get it back on track. My cousin in Pascagula house and car is gone, so it is really bad. We are helping him and his family out, as well as my uncle and aunt. I do realize a lot of life has been lost, but these people should really have known better to get out.

There are people without transportation in New Orleans for example because of the poverty. Still there was free evacuation and shelter programs, so there really is no excuse to stay there in a unsafe area. A lot of those deaths could have been prevented, the officials said qoute :Haul ASS out of here now!!!!." How stupid can some people be when it comes to that. I mean some people that were in safer areas and lost their homes, that is different. But in the target of hell on Earth, what does it take to leave? Human beings underestimate natures wrath, how fucking arragant.

I knew poeple were going to scold me when I said what was going on with me with no AC and entertainment. I was really just trying to break the ice of the fact of what has really happened.

Gas went from 2.60 to 3.20 in a matter of hours. Gas stations are running out of gas here too. More than Narlens is getting F*ed cause of this.

Yep get ready for some messed up shit. Gas prices will go up since 2 of our main oil refineries is in San Fransisco and New Orleans that I know of. Plus a few off shore oil rigs were obliterated.

Second, steel will be in shortage due to no barges bringing in imports through here during the storm. Of course thats one of the least problems I think.

Check the damage $25 Billion and maybe more, most not insured from what i heard. This still doesn't add up to the life that was lost, which is close to 2000. What is sick is 80% of them could have been prevented if people just didn't under estimate it.

I have been through Hurricane Hugo in Puerto Rico 1989. We were in a concrete bunker since it was in the Navy Base. We were very safe since it was mostly under ground and 200 feet above sea level. I saw its devistation. Dead birds as far as the eye could see, trucks on top of houses. It was unreal. I don't fuck with taking chances on hurricanes. It is too bad that everyone hasn't seen its truth before hand.

Gas prices went up here and the highest is 2.99 right now. I guess I should be thankful that I don't live in Atlanta where it is six dollars a gallon.

What pisses me off more about the evacuation is that there are looters going around taking advantage of this and stealing stuff! Where is the army, the national guard, the navy? Nancy Grace on CNN was asking all of these questions to Anderson Cooper eairler today and he really say anything. All of our soliders are in Iraq helping others when my brethern and sisters next door need help. Bush comes up on television on how he is feeling sorry for these people yet he isn't down there doing a damn thing about it. Hell, he didn't do shit last year! I just can't stand to see people act this way in times like these! We have a president who doesn't give a damn about my neighbors, looters who don't give a rats ass about what they're doing to others and themselves, and we have people suffering, having to live out of their homes and into sports stadiums (in Dallas, people are in the Reunion Arena and in Houston, the Astro Dome). God bless the people that survived this storm and I think I'll speak for the country of Texas that we will do what we can to help you all out in this time of need. The Commandments say "Love thy neighbor" and you are welcome here as long as it takes to recover from this nasty hurricane.

Well if it makes you feel any better Maury I spent the better part of my day helping load 18 Wheelers with bottled water bound for Lousiana and I'm trying to see what more I can do through the Salvation Army in deploying down to the ground zero of it all (Louisiana, Mississippi etc.) As of now no one has any information on that but the guy on the phone told me to call back tomorrow which I intend to do. I figure since I work for myself and don't have a rigid schedule I might as well try and do something to help these ppl. Volunteering in town is nice but I want to go THERE and help where I can.

This tragedy however, proves what I've been saying on these boards for years though. That in any given moment of an economic collapse, power shut downs, natural disaster etc. People's inherent "Barbarism" surfaces and many will take advantage of the confusion and chaos. I can understand if ppl are still in the danger zones or are going hungry and can't wait for food rations and decide to forage/scrounge... but to go around looting TVs, and shoes, into ppl's houses and Toys R Us stores is assasine. And like I've always mentioned, the National Guard and Police cannot and will not be able to be everywhere. Now armed thugs are looting and having it out with the few authorities there are. I'm thinking a volunteers corps of civilians armed and authorized by the proper authorities should be allowed to go in and police & contain the areas from future looting. Thus if you don't see me on these boards for awhile it's because I've left to help where I can or possibly head up such a "ACP" (Armed Citizen's Patrol) if that idea of non criminal volunteers is accepted by those in charge. Whatever happens I'll make sure to make a post before I leave.

Contrary to what many might think of me here on the boards. #1> I actually do give a shit about others and inherently always want to HELP. And #2> I've got more than enough training in Urban Containment & Police Tactics along with "Guerrilla Fighting" in various terrains (though search & destroy isn't really needed here I'd say) + cross trained in "Special Rescue" when I was about 13 with a (then) local Civil Air Patrol Group operating out of UH-1 Hueys w. permission from my father. While I was never "IN" the CAP they were at the time instructing volunteers in the event of such disasters. I'm a bit rusty on all of it but you don't forget the bulk of it.

As for being afraid of armed looting idiots. Sure, only a fool is never afraid but if something isn't done in the sectors where it's out of control and it's more than evident the states affected are under-manned. I'm sure with the right propostition (i.e. someone with a detailed SOP to initiate it), other volunteers will want to deploy in what is traditionally known as an ACP (Armed Civilian Patrol) that is really the function state "militia" used to carry out before wackos tarnished the image of what a milita is. I'm sure if I get to deploy to Lousiana or Mississippi it'll be of a normal capacity but I'm typing up the proposal for an Anti-Looters ACP. If they don't go for it then fine, but undermanned and seeing someone with their head on the shoulders and with an understanding of how to implement something like that, all that would be needed is for the Sheriff to swear in and deputize the ACP to carry out that function. I'm aware of the possible danger (be it helping in a "Conventional" manner or in ACP Formation) but I can't just sit back and watch this all unfold on the TV and act like it's a damn movie. There are people hurting, hungry and being taken advantage of and I intend to help wherever I can be deployed. Again, I'll fill in our community here if I should be able to leave though these things do take time as I learned during 9-11 when I was told by the Red Cross they had too many "Volunteers" already.

First I want to say my thoughts and prayers are with those affected by the hurricane. I don't have a problem with people that take the essentials to survive, but it's too bad to see a guy taking a fucking Powe Wheels jeep from a Wal-Mart. :oh_no: I was watching CNN (or Fox news) and they had a reporter inside a Wal-Mart. Two police officers were inside also taking stuff. I'm not sure exactly what they were taking, but they were wheeling around a shopping cart. One of them claimed they were there to stop looters.

#1> I will indeed keep my Neo Brethren up to date on whatever happens as far as my deployment to help in a conventional manner or both. *Actually if I get to go (which I'm sure won't be a problem) it'll be under the conventional "Volunteer" status no doubt. But I'll have the 12 page ACP Proposal ready to be shown to the proper personnel who can direct me to the ones in charge. Assuming things haven't been brought under better control, but I somehow doubt it. We are no where near the ground zero of this natural disaster and with the gas prices having reached just under $3.00 for regular, there are pockets of ppl siphoning gas from ppls vehicles. This was going on last week, but I've talked with 2 police friends of mine that have said there has been at least 14 cases of ppl complaining of near empty gas tanks, and a few who caught ppl red handed just since this morning. The fact it's not on the news might be that they don't want an open panic. But frankly I'm surprised it wasn't reported. Thus tonight I'll be on watch with my M-94 getting whatever sleep I can so I can call the Salvation Army about where to sign up for deploying to Louisana/Mississippi/New Orleans, + a few others who might know whom to contact ahead of time about my proposal.

I still can't help but have a small instinct in me that sort of does want to be at ground-zero. Some of the best fun I've had is survivalist camping (self-built shelters and the like) with my Scout troop, and I can say that being right there in the aftermath would be some story to tell! Mike, something tells me you can see what I'm talking about with this.

Tonight was the first time I've actually got to sit down and watch live coverage of the carnage left, but it's just blowing my mind... I was just there last summer driving down those streets being shown that are under water! I really need to goto bed but I can't quit stop thinking about this. If the government (I don't care who, just someone) doesn't step in and help these people, both in cities that are under water (this just freaks me out everytime I say it) and everywhere else in the country pertaining to price gouging there is going to be major economic trouble in the coming months. If we think our dollar is weak compared to the Pound now, just wait. I'm not even going to be able to afford food much less gaming...

Yeah I see what your saying dawg. But make no mistake I'm not going for glory I want to go because it pains me to see such misery, and the fact that with everything in confusion & chaos + lack of good logisitical personnel to both Search & Rescue + Contain/Hold At Bay looting, I just feel someone should be there who thinks in this manner. If someone has the same idea I have no problem joining them, but so far that doesn't seem to be the case at all.

As for being braver than you or anyone else. Naah, I just won't forgive myself if I just sit and do nothing. At least earlier today (well yesterday for about 5 hours) I got to help load 18-Wheelers with water and canned food that will be heading for those in need. But I want to do more is all. What surprises me the most however is with all the clean water that has been sent, why no one from Army Engineer Corps hasn't put up a outdoors 6 man shower system. Ppl waiting to evacuate and/or still coming out of the muck are going to need to get clean. It's heated water (even by way of solar power cells) in large drums and a person gets 2 minutes to wash up. Keeping ppl in filth is going to cause bigger problems soon enough.

I have been to New Orleans plenty of times and now am glad I did since it won't be the way it was from here on out. This past Madi-gras and a show the band The Melvins played at One Eyed Jacks was the last fun visits I had. It saddens me to see it in this condition considering it is one of the most historic cities in the US. The French Quarter is fucked from what I heard, which is the best part of the city.

Something just never seemed right when I looked up and would see boats passing through. My imagination went wondering like I would about California and its fault lines. Which by the way, thats another example of a matter of time. Many people think to themselves that this isn't going to happen in their lifetime, but I got news for you. A lot has happened in everyones lifetime that was thought not too.

Damn I am going to miss those drinks they are known for Hand-Grenades and Hurricane drinks. Hurricane drinks, shit thats fucked up now that I mention it. It was one hell of a great town to escape from the bullshit we face in school, work and life itself in my area. Also Biloxi, but I am not much of a gambler for casinos.

It makes me sick to see the footage of people looting those stores. I can see taking food and drinks if you really need it, but stealing electronics, shoes and a friggin' power wheels jeep is ludicrous. Nobody can use TV's and DVD players anyway, there's no power for hundreds of miles around the devastation! The cops need to shoot them where they stand.

Until June (3 months ago) I was a resident of New Orleans! I just finished my MFA so I moved to Ithaca to find employment (employment in the South sucks) and live with my girlfriend.

I didn't leave a minute too soon. This is horrible. I was there for three mediocre hurricanes and this is the one my friends always feared. Imagine if it had been a category 5, not a 4... I just talked to my former roomate last night, whose entire life has pretty much ended and he was in great despair. They are in Texas right now, and I am really happy how people have responded. The hotel he and his family are staying at is charging them only $25 a night and Walmart, McDonalds and many other stores are giving the victims giftcards. In, addition the hotel is feeding them free of charge. This of course does not help my friend's whom just bought their house, are paying it off for the next 25 years, and now have no house to go home to! Regardless to say they did not have hurrican insurance which is far too expensive for a working person to pay. So they have lost everything...

The situation in New Orleans is horrible. The waste of life that is looting during a time of catastrophe is the same trash that drives by and shoots tourists, or robs you in the Quarter and then just shoots you for the hell of it. I have seen pictures of these fuckers stealing lamps, televisions, dvd players --there's no electricity for that shit! Honestly the vagrance of New Orleans can flush down the toilet for all I care. The first year I lived there I was burglerized and everything I own was stolen from me, I almost quit school and went back to Detroit. I am happy I was at school when it happened because if I had come home they would have shot me, they do it for less. Noetheless, there are alot of people I care about in New Orleans and I have been in contact with them all...

My cousin lost his storefront and home in New Orleans. Luckly he's with his parents, my aunt and uncle in Denim Springs, but I'm told they're still without power.
My other aunt and grandfather are safe in Breaux Bridge. They're getting a good bit of rain, but had power enough for my grandfather to give me a telephone call the other day.

What's really unnerving is my mothers family around Natchez, MS. We got ahold of one of her uncles. But we haven't heard from an adoptive brother or an aunt of hers yet...just hoping they came out okay.

Evacuation of the Superdome to the Astrodome was just suspended because some chucklehead shot at a military helicopter. Idiot. Those people really need sanatation, medical, food, psychological, and spiritual help badly.

Never in my 22 years of existence in FL did I ever hear of people looting during a hurricane aftermath for it's a NATURAL DISASTER! Get to safety, receive and give medical attention whenever necessary, help your fellow man out, stay outta trouble, rebuild, donate if you can, and move on knowing that you made a difference and become more knowledgable in storms so that you'll be better prepared the next time it occurs. Why in God's name would you want to steal electrical devices (mostly for entertainment purposes) when the entire city is under water? Why would you steal guns from pawn shops and Wal-Mart to "defend" yourselves against the police and rob others who have already lost everything they have? What, to protect your turf? Here's some little details you won't read about in the paper...

They are not showing images from St. Bernard Perish, because there are corpses floating everywhere.

The U.S. government bombed one of the levees near the 9th ward to circumvent water, which in effect "saved" the historic French Quarter, but drowned 200 people in the blast site.

The looters, are not stealing food primarily, they are stealing manufactured goods, and of course weapons! Not only that, they are squatting in houses, not just looting them. They are even forming resistance cells, which is why the Terrorist squads were called in to NOLA...

This is all information from a friend of mine who is in NOLA right now... It is chaos there...

More... there are morrons shooting at the Chinook helicopters sent by the army delaying the New Orleans Superdome evacuation... :oh_no:

Carrying a firearm in that situation might be somewhat understandable for personal defense, but these armed gangs that are shooting at rescue choppers need to be shot on sight. Instead of the standard Blackhawks and Chinooks, they need to switch to military Blackhawks with mounted miniguns. That might deter some of these subhuman scum from popping off shots at them.

I'm not really that familar with New Orleans... So they bombed another part of the city to keep the French Quarter from flooding? That's insane!

This just keeps getting worse... I'm afraid that when the engineers and such are let in these radicals will be capping them right and left. It's not possible for military troops to search every house while the city is still underwater. Do these gangs think the whole world is like this? Are there people trying to talk sense into them?
How do they plan to police a town covered in water with alligators swimming around?

Man I was thinking about this last night. We can just get down in a basment or something made of concrete, but these people had winds as strong as most tornados plus 30ft tall walls of water. Getting down in a basement is not a good idea.

It's just blowing my mind that a city the size of New Orleans can be completely covered in water. :oh_no:

In addition to using text books that were published in 1985, most of the inner city youth believe that Martin Luther King freed the slaves. Try being a white teacher and trying to teach them that a white guy named Abraham Lincoln freed the slaves in the U.S...

Also, two years ago, the city of New Orleans, which is incredibly poor and in debt, bailed out the Harah's Casino (due to internal imbeselment), some 2 billion dollars or some shit, just to keep tourism high in NOLA! Good spend of money there!

That's right, casket chasing. Even though the city of New Orleans only burys it's dead in Mosoleums, I'm sure the amout of water flooding the city could bust the concrete in a few of the older setups.

That, and the dead bodies that are floating in the water to be tracked down. That water is a rank mixture of sewage, gasoline, festering death, and vermin. For just the interest of health everyone should evacuate New Orleans.

So forget kennels. Leave the pets for dead. Get out of there. If these thugs keep causing trouble, shoot them dead.

I lost power during two of them for about 4 days each time. Its amazing how important electricity is to us these days. Especially when its humid from the weather and you have no AC, linoleum is your best friend at night.

We have been lucky this year, I thought for sure this one was going to hit the gulf, speed up, and turn right into the Tampa area. I live close enough to the coast to where I would have definitely been evacuated.

I'm just amazed at all the BS going on where its flooded. I keep reading about all these people shooting at each other, and someone even shot at a rescue chopper. :oh_no:

BTW did you guys see the prisoners being moved yesterday? Hundreds of them were sitting handcuffed on a partially submerged on-ramp.

In all seriousness that is a HUGE problem right now in St. Bernard Parish, that's why there are corpses floating everywhere...

It's really unhealthy to have hundred year old death matter floating around...

I'd hate to see what my nephew would've had to go through, especially this was his first time being away from his family in another state with people he doesn't even know. He was just about to start college at Xavier University and my half sister bailed him out just in time. Right after the orientation, the speaker told everyone to just pack their bags and go back where they came from.

When Hurricane Isabel came through our area in 2003, the day after it hit was the most stressful day for me. Gas stations had traffic lining up from the freeway off ramp, I've seen several fist fights at the pumps and more fights at Wal Mart for ice. Even I too was running on E. But i made it home just in time. I slept non stop that day, for about 10 hours. All I did to overcome boredom was either walk around the block or maybe to the next neighborhood which was a mile away from mine, clean up the front yard, the sun being out helped me cope. And my only source for entertainment, this was a silver lining to my week without power, was listening to AM radio talk shows where dozens of callers from all over Petersburg Prince George and all other surrounding towns were venting about their frustrations about life with no electricity as far as

The complaints about the pettier things we could live without were the most amusing. But when it came to necessities such as food and water, that was no laughing matter.

What really sucks is being stuck with taking showers with ice cold water.

We have our good times too, we turned a natural disaster into a social tool. For the sake of not wasting food, alot of the residents in our neighborhood got together got whatever food was left in their fridge so it wouldn't spoil from not being refrigerated and gathered at a nearby park and threw a cookout. Not only that, we even let the Electric and Tree crews get some.

Plus relief effort is also being made by the Chris Duhon (of the Chicago Bulls) Hurricane Relief Fund, the FedEx Forum (Memphis Grizzlies' arena) is serving as a drop-off point for relief, The Green Bay Packers are sending an airplane's worth of supplies to be sent down to LA and MS, the Reds, Astors, Marlins, Pirates, Dodgers, Mariners, Royals,Twins, and Rangers will all have drives towards Katrina victims, the Astrodome in Houston will be used to house Katrina refugees, and as of this time, the Red Cross has raised over $9.6 million. It's good to see that sports celebs actually care.
