So I beat Zero Mission and I started playing the original Metroid that's on the cart. This was the game I played as a kid that kept me from trying another Metroid game again till like a few months ago.
So I started playing it, and I still hate this version of the game. It seems Zero Mission was a remake of this game, and I loved that, but I just can't enjoy the NES version it seems.
Should I try and blast through this or just move on to Fusion?

If you played zero mission there's really no reason -Metroid 2 and then Super Metroid, if you want to do it in order
Metroid was one of those games as a kid on the NES that kept my brothers and I occupied for hours on end. It wasn't until we got a book with maps that we finally finished it. I think I was in 3rd or 4th grade at the time. I can run through it in less than 2 hours now (or at least I could when I felt like playing it, probably not that good at it any more).
And if you just want to see the ending, see if the Justin Bailey code still works. lol
Metroid was a fucking great game back in the day. Why do you think people still want to play the new games like Fusion and Prime? Sure they probably got some N00B5 into it with the new games, but games like Prime felt like they were made for the original fans.
Scary thing about Prime is that even though it's a 1st person style game, it still gives me that feeling of exploration I had when I used to play Metroid and Super Metroid.
Anyway, to answer your question, if you don't like playing it, don't play it. There is NO point in playing a game just because someone tells you it's a classic. If you don't enjoy playing it, then find something you DO enjoy playing or go do something you do enjoy. Life is too short to waste on games you don't like. ;)
super metroid and metroid prime are incredible. both offer the same amount of worldly exploration, and total atmosphere and immersion. MP is stunning too.. it just gets better and better as you get the more addons, double jump boots et cetera, and you come back to places all powerful , suddenly that massive ledge you couldn't get to 5 hours ago is oh so accessible.. so satisfying.Quote:

Unfortunately, although that game started the "timeless" search and destroy/hunt platform genre, its iteration of the formula didn't age well at all.
It was harder than a coffin nail back in the day and remains so.... and as much as I hate to say it.. while the level design was great the rest doesn't stand up so well.
Save yourself the frustration and time and just play ZM, which while ALSO a collosal waste of time and ruining of a classic game.. gives you a more modern feel.. and it shows what it would be like if it were updated to the way the rest of the series is.
It's not that the game is bad, it's just that it didn't age well and the rest of the 2d versions have so far surpassed it that it makes it look even worse.
Don't bother with Fusion... it's really bad. They should've let the series die with SM as the apex of gaming or keep EXACTLY the same gameplay and just redid the levels.. unfortunately, they dumbed it down for the modern gamer and made it very linear and uninteresting. What was such a phenomenal game (SM) has been fused with, I hate to say it.. almost Super Mario World type game play in terms of linearity.. and a dash of Prime's "Hey, instead of a challenge and exploration, I'll just tell you where to go because you're too stupid or have too little of an attention span to wade through it"
Fusion is crap. It was a great concept, but fell flat on its face. I don't expect anyone younger than 24 to understand that gripe.

I have to disagree on the difficulty dept. I suck hard at games and I'll be the first to admit it. I'll also admit that when I was in 3rd/4th grade, it was tough as balls. However, by the summer of my 5th grade going into 6th, I was able to fly pretty well through the game without problem. The trick, IMO, was getting the ice beam ASAP and using it to collect some of the energy pods that generally required the high jump boots to get.Quote:

I got back into Metroid by playing through Metroid 2 on the GB...through my nGage. :p
It was hard, but I manged it and had a blast.
I played through Zero Mission, which I thought was awesome.
Tried Metroid 1, and I hate it just like I did ages ago.
I think I'm going to go through Fusion next, just to build up to SM, and really enjoy it as the apex of the 2D Metroids, then do Prime.
I'm pretty dead set against playing the original now, I just don't have fun with it and I have too many games to play to get mirred playing something I'm not having fun with just because it's "a classic" and part of a series I'm enjoying.

I had a blast with it kind of tricky but not break your Game Boy hard. I also loved the unstopable clone of you hunting you down. Wish they had done more with that.
Fusion was a little bit short, and sort of simplistic compared to other Metroid titles (Super Metroid, Metroid Prime), but I really enjoyed it, and thought it was worthy of having the Metroid game. I can't ever recall a Metroid title that I didn't enjoy.Quote:

Another logical point to make is that Metroid 1, while intrinsically hard by itself, may appear harder to some because the instant gratification received by beautiful graphics aren't there. In other words, because the graphics are 16 color at low res, it may make 'some' people not care to try 'as hard' as if the game were 'pretty'. Forsaking these traits and accepting a game, a person, an idea, or whatever else truly judges the merit of that given "person, place, or thing".Quote:

I just find it annoying. Yeah it's hard, but you know it took me a bit but I got used to it, found ways to live and got used to the physics. Kept on refilling the health by camping by one of the pipes and the little flying enemies that zoom out if you keep standing there. It's old school hard, but with enough play and practice you can do it. I managed to get the missiles and the second energy tank before having to put it down (playing on GBA so my time is limited).Quote:

If you want a great NES game that was not made "Inferior" by latter editions, get Blaster Master.
I belive that it was even re-released for the GBC and is the same as the NES version plus a Save Feature.

Metroid (NES) is not "harder" because its from a classic era of gaming in which developers were geniuses looking to challenge and impart life-altering virtual experiences to young children.
Its harder because its fucking terrible and it lacks in control and responsiveness that can readily be found in just about every other fucking Metroid game, which not surpsingly, are far better than the original.
Our similarities continue... Zelda 2 still stands as the most fun Zelda I've played, and the most often finished as well.Quote:

In Metroid 2 and Zero Mission, you jump a certain way and fall in certain ways depending on how you control it. This is very different and annoying when playing the NES version.
The perfect example where I noticed it is where you pick up your first set of missiles. Jump up to the first platform and then jump over to get the missiles. As you're jumping and pushing forward you look like you're going to overshoot the middle platform. In Metroid 2 or Zero Mission you'd let go of forward and just fall forward onto the platform due to inertia, not so in the NES version. Let go of forward in the original and you just drop straight down. You hold foward in the NES version to get the missiles, if you did that in Zero Mission you'd be in the lava.
Things like this mean the controls feel imprecise, or differently than what we've become accustomed to. Buro hit the nail on the friggin head with what he said there, we've come a long, long way as far as programming controls and responses in games, and I'm talking about the 8bit days where most of this work was done.
This is why a ton of old games seem "hard" for most gamers today, since they're so used to the controls being a certain way, not so much easier, just different.
M3h, the controls feel fine to me. Of course they're improved in subsequent Metroid games, but I've never had a problem with the way Metroid controls. It's a little more loose than say, Super Metroid, but that doesn't mean Metroid isn't a great game.

I know you made the SMB comparison and I'll be honest with you, I find that an exercise in tedium also.
The 8-bit generation is that weird transition period between simple yet great arcade games and the 16-bit generation's leap forward in playability and genres.. I find a lot of the games that were so "great" back then or are "classics" play like absolute garbage. Time is a bitch, I guess.
Metroid still has its charms, though. I *do* suggest, though.. picking up the Metroid hacks that are all over if you're a big metroid fan. I play them pretty frequently and som eof them are REALLY spectacular.
