Handheld gaming and you -

With all the current Gameboy Micro related threads and discussions, I was wondering on how do you people relate to the actual concept of "handheld gaming".

Seems like several members here actually play handhelds while they are not at home, be it at work, on the bus or whatever. I find this weird, since I personally only use my PSP or DS while I am at home, and I also don't know a single person that actually plays handhelds "on the go".

It sure does sound like a good option if you are alone in a long trip, while on the plane for example, but at the same time I see it as something extremely antisocial - getting to know who sits next to you is always an option too (if it's worth it).

Again, I don't understand the need to fill every little *gap* in one's life with a couple of minutes of meaningless gaming.

Sometimes I play my PSP or my NGPC if I go to a movie early (to snag a good spot) and want to kill time until the preview.

Other than that my free time at school or whatever is usually spent reading a textbook. :crying:

I play mostly at home as well.

I bought a sega game gear once just so i could play it on vacations. Yeah i was pretty anti-social :kekeke: I also used to have an insane amount of those handheld Lcd games. You know the cheap ones when you press the little black button with a pencil all the available animations show up? Now when i go on vacations i just sleep until i'm there and once i've arrived i mingle. So handhelds are kind of pointless for me now.

I usually do most handheld gaming at home. I normally play 30-45 minutes on the DS in bed before I sleep, not every night but pretty often. It's nice to have the handheld for trips though. I'm going out of town for a weekend in a couple of weeks, and it will be nice to have a portable to play while I'm in the hotel.

Portables are also a godsend on long plane trips, I would have gone insane without my GBA when I flew to Japan. They're great for travel in general.

For me, it's also about the 2D factor. The handheld market is one of the last bastions of good old 2D gaming, so that's a big reason I'm still into portables.

when im not at home the last thing i wanna be doing is playing video games. unless i see a packed arcade it isnt gonna happen.


and i hate playing handhelds. ive tried but the joy i get out of them died when i was bout 13 years old.

I'm probably split about evenly between playing my DS and PSP at home and either at lunch or between the end of my regular work day and before night meetings at work (which can be a wait of 2+ hours).

So I voted "on the go," since I think that fits the intention of the poll more.

I figure I may as well take Nintendogs with me to play while no one else is in the office and I'd only be on my computer anyway.

It's really hard to play my GBA at home with its saltine-sized screen when I've got so many other superior gaming options. I do get some enjoyment out of it when I'm flying or stuck in an airport, but other than that it really doesn't get much use. This is why I haven't gotten a DS and is also why I probably won't get a PSP. I like the fact that many of the old SNES classics are available on the GBA, but I have most of them for my SNES anyway. I do play some of the GBA games on my Gameboy player for the Cube, but I guess that doesn't really count.

So anyway, yeah, having the latest and greatest mobile gaming device is pretty worthless to me.

Shouldn't this be in the handheld forum? Oh wait, you actually want people to see it... ;)

When I go somewhere, I'M the one driving. Playing handhelds and driving isn't conducive to a long life.

I also won't play handhelds while at home. I mean, fuck me, I have a nice big TV, why would I want to play on a postage stamp? I don't, so I don't. If they gave me an option to use my TV, like the GB player, then I'd play them. Of course, that means I wouldn't really be playing a handdeld anymore...

I know it can't be done well with the DS, but if the PSP had the ability to have s-video/component/DVI/some sort of video out, where I could play on my TV, I'd be more likely to pick one up. You could just use the handheld as the controller and you'd be good to go. Wonder why they didn't do that?

Pretty much at home. And since it's a bitch to see the screens in a car because of the sun I feel I am forced to. I bought my PSP mainly because I was going to have a 4 hour trip back in May. On the way I turned it on and could barely make out THUG2 Remix so I said fuck it. Even when I was on my way back at the begging of the month I couldn't see HSG enough to care.

It was the same with my GBA/GBASP. One of the main reasons I got rid of them besides waiting seemingly an eternity for the games I wanted to come out.

Because of these I'm debating picking up a DS. I have enough stuff to do at home and gaming these days isn't very high on that list. It's hard enough making time for my other consoles.

i just got a DS and love it. it's great because i can get games that can't be played on other consoles because of the inovative hardware. i'm pretty addicted to nintendogs.

i've mostly been playing it at home, cuz when i go out i've got better stuff to do. however, i'll be driving from new york to new orleans soon and i'm sure i'll be playing the DS a bunch when my girlfriend is driving.

i had a PSP which i used to play on the subway, but i sold that because none of the games really kept my interest. ports of games that i CAN play at home is not my idea of a good portable gaming experience.

I can't stand handhelds, although I do have a decent NGPC collection, but that's only for collector reasons.

I haven't played a handheld system since the original Game Boy. Played some Zelda and some fucking Pokémon. Blue and Yellow, bitches. Bought a NGPC but never really bothered using it.

I'll probably be getting a PSP though. It's fucking r0x ;) DS sux monkey ballz!!!11

Playing Magical Drop 2 survival mode on the PSP while dropping a duece is a good way to pass the time.

If I'm away for a week or something I'll play them, or if I'm getting a flight very late or very early and can't really get my brain onto work I'll play something, but really, they're what I do when I can't be bothered reading.

Your poll is flawed. Where is the option for Both Home and On the Go?

Mostly on the go though. Lots of crap to do when home. And I don't get the TV that much with a wife and kid to compete with.

Antisocial? :oh_no: I usually go on a plane and have a hard time sleeping because there are just so many social people conversing around me. It's just crazy!

I think Mushiki will be pissed that the poll shows the majority of people here play handhelds somewhat regularly, even on the road.

I never fly anywhere, if I go anywhere I'm almost always driving. So if I do play handhelds it's at home. But I don't own any handhelds at the moment anyway.

I am not disappointed at all, only 30% of the voters seem to use their handhelds on the go.

I don't see many people using hand helds in public at all. I've really only seen two people. This kid in a barber shop playing his GBASP and another kid at a Hobby Shop with one. Oh and this one guy was in the arcade playing Darkstalkers on his PSP (I don't know why either.)

If you have steady access to a TV why wouldn't you just play a console while at home? Handhelds cramp my hands up and I get bored of them in about .2 seconds. You, Mushiki, are a hand held fancy pants.

Get a GBA and Astro Boy: The Omega Factor...seriously, I had never even seen/read anything Astro Boy related and that game is in my Top 10, easily. Treasure's best, IMHO.

When I was a little kid, I'd bring my GB with me when going to restaurants and play Super Mario Land, which is still the shit. I remember I even beat Wario Land II for the GBC at Golden Corral at a dinner party one night, that's still an amazing game as well (best in the series too, WL4 ain't got shit on WL2).

As I grew older, I stopped bringing the Game Boy out; the GBC had a pretty miserable collection, IMO, and was merely a shadow of its predecessor. When the GBA came out, I waited until its price dropped and then bought that. I honestly didn't play it too much and blinded myself from some magnificent games (for a long while, I thought of it as merely a portable SNES, with no good games of its own).

Then the Circuit City $5 sale came out last summer, and I picked up some truly amazing gems, such as Mega Man Zero, Gradius Galaxies, and Mega Man & Bass (which I absolutely love to this day; it's my favorite MM game), among others. Because of the sale, my interest into the GBA really ignited, and I've got a nice size collection of some great games now. STILL looking for a complete and good condition of Contra EX and Final Fight One, but because of the CCC next month, FFOne isn't much a priority now.

I never play my GB out in public now, because when I'm out I really don't see why I need to play it. I hear many people have time to play their GBA at work, but at my job I'd get fired off the bat for doing so (I don't even have any time to do it at work too, and honestly even if I did I wouldn't bring it with me). I play my GBA at home all the time, and I rarely travel by plane. On road trips I'll take it with me, but I haven't been on one when I wasn't the driver in over a year.

The GBA has a lot of gems for it, as does the Game Boy (Kirby Blockball and Dreamland 2, mmm mm). But when I play them, it'll always be in my house.

I only play a game on the go if im absolutely addicted to it. Advance wars ds i was playing on the train today as i was going to see a blue jay game. Other then that its nearly impossible to play while driving! I play it mostly at home though.

i havent owned a handheld since the neo pocket color, and i don't see myself owning one anytime soon, just no time to play it between normal systems and playing handhelds at home only is beyond gay.

The Game Boy Player for the GC is nifty.

I used to own one (a GC w. GBA Player) but I'm no longer FEELING it. 'sides, I'm more interested in tracking down the choice upright cabs for my Mini-Arcade in my house now. If I'm not playing in my home arcade, then it's MegaDrive, Famicom, SATURN or SMS.

Yeah I hear you about having the true arcade boards. They just take up so much space and I have so much shit already... I mean my game/computer/tech stuff is in every room of the house, the garage, and outside on the patio... I need a shop building for a garage. How killer would that be?

This is why I'm getting out of the Console (well contemporaries mostly) area of gaming. I've long took up two rooms and with a daughter on the way and priorites changing + a big enough room to house 10 Upright Cabs, + 2 more in another back area I can have 12 arcade games of my choice in the house. I'm expecting a deilevery tomorrow actually for IKARI III: The Rescue, then sometime next week (hopefully) my damn near brand-new "Operation Thunderbolt" should be in, and I've got everything I need to build an upright for my long sought after 1987 Konami F-15 Strike Eagle shooter MX 5000. In about 2 months I'll procure the Final Fight cab I've always wanted, then a UN Squadron and Super Contra.

I still like the idea of "Portable/Handheld Gaming" I just don't have the time nor the patience is all. The only good thing about it all is that 2-D is being kept alive in that medium. I just don't see how ppl can bust a nut over a great 2-D title on a handheld but then shit all over a damn good 2-D game if it were on the current or next gen home consoles? I don't play games for more than 45 minutes at a time anyhow, thus classic arcade goodness is where it's at for me.

On the plane is a big one, especially since I fly coast to coast at least twice a year and to the midwest at least once or twice.

In hotels, usually when my kid is taking a nap. What else am I going to do then?

Did you see that episode of xplay too? I was fighting mad with some of the comments they made about Metal Slug. It boggles my mind when people have a double standard when it comes to gaming. They are willing to rave about a 2d gba game, but when they see a 2d game for a current-gen system automatically trash it for being from the darkages. Then also you've got all these kids thinking it's now cool to like 8bit Nintendo and Atari. For the love of god could Hot Topic quit printing these tees already?

I mean. I didn't like the ps2 because it had such stellar games as zone of the enders 2 and all, but really, I dont want to sit in my house with a portable as heavy as the psp.
