I was in USMC infantry a few years back and have always wanted to get back into shooting. I am not a "gun person" so I had no idea that the assault weapons ban of 1994 had been repealed. I was talking to a buddy of mine and he thinks that the ban is going to go back into effect very soon. I figured if I wanted an assault rifle, now was the time.

I haven't heard much on the reinstatement of the semi-automatic assault weapons ban. Hope that doesn't happen again soon, as it was more or less worthless anyway in keeping "assault weapons" from the general public anyway.
Heh, a Bushmaster. Nice looking gun! Any reason in particular as to why you chose a Bushmaster?
Is this model full auto? If so, what is the rate of fire? How light is it?
I ask because I've mostly used and fired Colts all my life.
I seriously doubt that it's full auto - they're illegal unless you've got a class III firearms license.
Anyway, that's a nice looking rifle, although I kind of doubt that the assault weapons ban will be renewed anytime soon.

That sounds like a best-case scenario. In many cases, you have to get the permission of the local sheriff in your area, and provide justification for ownership of a machine gun. And considering that lots of cops of complete thugs, personally I'd be uncomfortable with something like that.Quote:

I didn't know that about the MGs. I was always under the impression you HAD to have a Class III FFL. Interesting. Maybe I'll buy me that MG-42 (or 34) I was looking at a few months back then. But I'd rather fund my Indie film with that money though. Usually for fully automatic fire I have found that it's not worth paying all that money. I can't speak for an MG but on your average assault rifle the AUTO BURST works nicely indeed. I wouldn't call it "True" Autofire in the classic sense, but it's rapid fire pleanty to me. I like the fact I can simply attatch it to my AK-47, or take it off without ever having to do any internal modifications to it.Quote:

I repeat, these are free! The ATF sent these to me via FedEx and i got them about 3 days after i placed an order. The Federal Firearms Reference guide definitely set me straight about what was and was not considered a semi-automatic assault weapon. Good thing the ban is over now anyway :D

In the marines I had the chance to fire just about every fully auto firearm the military uses today. With a few notable exceptions most fully auto guns are only useful for laying down a surpressing blanket of bullets and taking out area targets. In Vietnam the troops used the fully auto M16A1 and wasted millions of rounds. The funny thing is, I walked into the store planning on purchasing a Colt, because like you said, it's all I've ever really fired as well. The people in the shop let me fire both weapons, the bushmaster and the colt. The bushmaster felt better and had a slightly smoother action. The bushmaster had a more heavy duty barrel and came with the izzy flash surpressor. They're practically the same gun though. The shop owners and several other people at the shooting range explained to me that Colt is kinda like the Harley Davidson of guns; you're just paying more money for the name. The price for the law enforcement version of the Colt was around 1500 and the Bushmaster was 1100. That kinda sealed the deal for me right there. I figure I'd rather buy a slightly better gun for 400 less than a name brand gun. I'm not paying a 100 dollars for each letter (c-o-l-t=400 bucks more). Don't get me wrong, Colt still makes a damn fine gun; you're just paying a premium for the name.

I put about 1000 rounds through it yesterday and it didn't jam once. It's so lightweight, compact. and handles like a dream. I've ordered a 100 round dual snail Beta drum magazine so I can really put down some serious firepower and not have to worry about reloading. I love my gun!

So HellioN, what do you think of the gun they are pre-selling on AR15.com? $745 + shipping seems like a good deal for an assembled gun. I'm more of a hand gun guy so any input would be appreciated.

All I can do is take the gamble though, if they want the rifle back at some point and I'm still in CA I wonder if they will reimburse me.
