Granted most, if not all of the media had the Yankees winning the division. I really do think the Red Sox may let this slip away because if you look at the Red Sox team, they are not the same team they were last year. Sure they split with the Angels, but I don't think the Red Sox are as good as you thought they were.
Schilling is a disaster in the bullpen to put it quite simply. Even whenever Keith Foulke comes back, that's not really a guarantee IMO because Foulke had a career year last season. He was never a lights out closer prior to the playoffs last year and I think that is a good indication that he happened to have a good run.
Not to mention their starting pitching is shot. The idiots in Boston can claim otherwise, but losing Pedro Martinez really hurt that team. I wonder if that may go down as the "Clemens decision" of 2004. The Red Sox thought Clemens was done after 1996 and here we are 8 years later looking at him dominating the way he did when he was young. Maybe the same thing will happen with Pedro. I still think the Yankees should have signed him over one of those 3 pre-season aquisitions.
I think the AL overall got a lot tighter than was projected a month ago. I can see a ton of different ways everything can go. You have quite a few teams in the mix right now...Red Sox, Yankees, White Sox, Indians, Angels, and the A's. 4 out of those 6 teams will be in the post season, the question is which...I'm not quite ready to make that prediction just yet. :)
