Considering regulars/starters
2005 Yankees homegrown: Mariano, Jeter, Robinson Cano, Jorge Posada, Chien-Ming Wang, Bernie Williams, some middle relievers (Proctor, etc). 4 position players, 2 pitchers
2005 Red Sox homegrown: Trot Nixon, Bronson Arroyo, very late season middle relief (Papelbon, Hansen) 1 position player
Realize that Varitek and the rest were from trades and free agency.
2005 Angels homegrown: Erstad, Figgins, GA, B Molina, F. Rodriguez, Donnelly, Shields, Lackey, Washburn. 4 position players
And from the great Yankee teams from 96-2001? O'Neil and Tino and Brosius were all brought in from trades. The pitching was by trade and free agency except for Pettitte.
What I'm saying is it's hardly JUST from internal talent. It's spending your money wisely. Sheffield was a good pick up for the money but was ARod? Sure he was. They never would have gotten to the post season without his numbers, but he didn't perform up to the massive contract. I would rather have a healthy Scott Brosius or even Charlie Hayes in there.
Yanks have learned though and you can bet there will be many changes coming. The upper minors (AAA and AA) are low on grade A prospects except for rhp Phillip Hughes, but A ball is LOADED. They have been drafting better and should start developing again. And the best use of money is for KEEPING the best talent you develop.
