The Official MLB thread

I didn't go back through and look for any posts regarding it but has talk of the MVPs come up yet? I didn't want to start a whole new thread since this one continues to have life breathed into it (I do love the number of baseball fans on here :) ).

I just got back from the Reds-Cards game tonight and finally got to see Albert Pujols live in person. Of the current crop of ballplayers, him and Vladimir Guerrero are my two favorites. Not suprsingly, if I had to pick MVP candidates for both leagues today, it'd be those two.

What I'm interested in hearing is who you guys think are the front runners. I haven't kept up with the AL players as well as I should have but on the NL front I've been watching the discussion revolve around Pujols, Dereck Lee, and Andruw Jones. I think Pujols beats them out as the Cubs aren't going anywhere this year and I don't think Jones and his hellacious amount of jacks is enough to merit serious consideration, Chipper Jones be damned. Thoughts?

You're ignoring the fact though that Andruw Jones is a stud in center, whereas Poo-holes is merely average+. Lee is a great 1st bagger though, but that ain't as impressive as a dominant center fielder.

Former Cub Andre Dawson won an MVP for the last place Cubbies before and all he did was hit 47 homeruns with a decent average. Lee will win the MVP and probably should.

In the AL it's really a two-man race, ARod and Ortiz. No two players can match their stats and ARod has finally become the big man. Clutch hits, huge bombs, etc. Remember him beating Schilling in that relief appearance with a monster homer? And the Yanks hold the season series advantage 9-7 and 4-3 at Fenway (where the last series is). If the Yanks take first, ARod should be the MVP.

The biggest races are the Cy Youngs. In the AL I think Santana is the best choice. Screw that fatass Colon. Mariano also deserves consideration and might sneak in if Santana and Colon split voters.

In the NL it should be Dontrelle. That dude is money. Gets a decision nearly everytime out. He's 21-9 in 31 starts. Did you hear me? 30 decisions in 31 starts. The only other pitcher like that is Jake Westbrook of the Indians at 15-14. You want that bitch on the mound.

Not to mention a 2.48 ERA and 5 shutouts.

Carpenter can suck a fatty.

It's not really a race in the NL since the entire NL West is a joke. The East is feasting on the West so there's the only reason the East is in a near dead heat.

The top 6 in the AL, 2 each division, are pretty evenly matched.

Rivera Should Definiltly win the MVP.

David Ortiz is a late inning hero occasionaly but Rivera's Late inning Heroics are Legendary.

He's come through like 50 times this season and come up empty like 5.

A-Rod is a statistical Marvel but He doesnt do much to help his team with the bat. I'd always rather have Jeter or Sheff up with the based loaded, down 2 runs in the bottom of the 9th.

Arod has really picked it up this year. He was carrying the team through most June and July. Jeter I have nothing to say on that but I'd take Arod over Sheffeild.

AL MVP-Arod clutch hits and gold glove D(maybe Vlad)
NL MVP-Andruw Jones no question about it he carried the Braves this year
AL Cy Young-Cliff Lee undefeated 2nd half maybe Rivera
NL Cy Young-Clemens or Willis

Vlad isn't even in the running for MVP this year.

He has been so spotty this season there is no way he would be MVP.

Ortiz and A-Rod are the top 2 choices.

But I think A-Rod should win because in addition to having a great season offensively, his defense at third base has been amazing.

The guy is the greatest all round baseball player in the game today, and is a first ballot hall of famer. There's a bit more to A-Rod than statistics. Not to mention he has seemed to be more of a leader than Jeter has. Jeter rarely says anything, A-Rod is more than willing to say stuff to the media.

Has anyone noticed how much the media loves the guy?

Hell, Peter Gammons even likes the guy a ton which says a lot considering ESPN's bias towards Boston.

Ortiz does not deserve the MVP because he cannot play defense. He's a DH because Terry knows better than to stick that fat ass in the infield.

Without some of the plays A-Rod made so far this season at third base, the Yankees are more than 5 games back.

The only reason I said Vlad as my second is because I'd take him over Boston's duo. But I'd say Arod an the MVP easily just like Andruw Jones. Vlad has no chance to win it.

He hasn't even been mentioned as being a potential candidate for winning the MVP.

The only two names that matter are A-Rod and Ortiz.

It's what Jeter DOESN'T say to the media that makes him a leader. In that clubhouse you know who rules that roost.

Eh you know what though...Jeter IMO does not hold a candle to the late Thurman Munson as a captain.

I love Jeter, but again like I said, I don't feel like he is a leader...of course I am basing it against Thurman.

I was having a conversation the other night with my friend about Munson.

My question to him was, if Thurman Munson does not die in 1979, do the Yankees collapse in the '81 World Series? After going to the playoffs in the 1981 season, they never made it back till 1995. (The fact that most Yankee haters overlook quite convienently)

My feeling is that they win that World Series regardless of Fernando Valenzuela.

His style of play, leadership and intensity are unquestioned. There is a reason that A-Rod is playing third.

Major League Baseball should really really rename the MVP to "Hitter of the Year" and they should Re-Name the CY young award to "Starting pitcher of the Year".

Nobody is as valuble than Mo Rivera. He's been on the mound at nearly nearly half of the yankee's wins. He has more wins than blown saves. And only one of his Blown Saves resaulted in a win.

No Rivera=No chance at a title.
