Blazing Saddles is the greatest movie ever made

Fact.

I know it's been said before, but that movie could NEVER be made today. You'd have every special interest group and soccer mom bitching after its first day in theaters. I'd like to see something remotely this offensive get made today. The only thing that comes close I can really think of is South Park the Movie and Team America.

Mostly because it's a really old film from 1974.

How many films from 1974 do you see is going to be priced at retail price years after its release? Studios just sell their library to increase quarter profits.

You'll also find most DVDs end up in the bargain bins after less than 6 months now, largely due to consumer consumption practice and emptying shelf space for newer releases.

Well if I'm ever bored enough or can remember to at the time I'll rent it. Then if I like enough I'll be 31 years too late telling everybody how I just saw it and that it's like Teh Funnay!. Hell it was because of that reason alone I didn't see The Breakfast Club, Sixteen Candles until 1995, and History of the World until sometime last year.

...as for "Imma' git you sucka!" all I'll say is if you haven't seen too many blackploitation films like Black Caesar, Bucktown, or SHAFT it probably won't be funny to you at all since it borrows heavily from them, including Issac Hayes in a Psuedo Truck Turner role with Jim Brown as Slaughter.

As much as I love Blazing Saddles, I would have to say that The Producers and Young Frankenstein are his two best movies.

How can you not love a movie that has a musical number called Springtime for Hitler. For my money The Producers is his best movie

I agree with this, IMO. But it's hard to put Blazing Saddles down. It was a great movie that sort of combined ideas. To make a comedy that takes a poke at mentalities and racism of the old (gold-rush era) America. Even to the point of how far it trickled down. Harsh racism from otherwise nice and innocent people. How they integrate that 'good honest living' with the perpetual stomping down of another race. However, it puts that whole thing through a Warner Brothers-style comedy filter, with crazy characters, humorous (other film) references, and a truly mind-bending 'what if' situation that pushes the envelope to fantasy. A truly imaginative and classic way to face such issues, all the while, disarming the audience's idea of taking offense, by always reminding them that this is just a movie, laugh and have fun. The movie still gets an anti-racism message across and may hit home in a few places(where you can find them), but the use of over-exaggerations (typically borrowed from the old cowboy movies and such) do keep it tongue and cheek. In classic Mel Brooks style (just like with his Hitler refences), he had a flair for giving people a light-hearted look at a much darker time.

The Producers and Young Frankenstein are probably his best material, but Blazing Saddles comes close (but excels in certain unique aspects). You also had Gene Wilder at his very best, in these films (though he is immortalized as Willy Wonka).
