Your most obscure game favorites

Use this thread to describe for most loved yet most unheard of game or games , just because its not poplar does not mean it isnt any good .

My favorite Obscure game would have to be SD Golden Fighter for the Super Famicom . "SD" for the laman stands for Super Deformed or as some wold call it "CHIBI" or smaller versions of original characters with oversized heads .

SD Golden Fighter is by Culture Brain as is its predesessor Golden Fighter as well as a more well known fighting game series for the Super Famicom called Super Chinese fighter .

SD golden Fighter is a great fighting game with great looking characters and beautiful super moves and is a jewl in my collection I love it

One of my personal favorite obscurities would have to be All Japan Pro Wrestling for the SFC. It's probably not that obscure in Japan, but I saw it in the bargain bin of a video game store for a couple bucks and I had to buy it.

Basically, it's your run-of-the-mill wrestling game that will frustrate the hell out of you until you figure out the timing of moves and how to counter anything the computer or another player throws at you. The sprites are pretty big and colorful and detailed, so it's pretty fun to look at, at least. Oh yeah, and Giant Baba is in there, so it can't be all bad. :D

As for me, my most obscure favorite game is probably Namco's Shadowland for the PC Engine/arcade. Tough 2D side scroller, but rewarding as hell once you figure out the mechanics of the gameplay. I much prefer the slightly different PC Engine version.

Flashback from Delfine software for the snes and genesis. It had fantastic graphics for the time. It also had a cool story and innovative gameplay. (It plays like Oddworld) :)

Do you honestly consider Flashback to be obscure?

Regardless, the 3D0 version is awesome, but I put the most time into the Sega CD version.

In this day and age, liking Street Fighter 2 is an obscure choice.

But if we have to be hardcorps about this, I would have to say Gain Ground is a pretty good choice (but even that may not be obscure enough for some of you).

I bought it for 5 dollars in the discount bin at KB toys years ago. I had no idea it was a well known game or that there was a 3DO version :loco:

Ok then I am pretty sure this game is obscure:


Miku The Metal Fighter for Sega Saturn. It is a werd adventure fighting game. It has cutscene fights where you select actions and they play out on screen. It is really fun once you get the hang of the controls. ;)

M3h, that's about it - most of the other stuff that I like would probably be considered mainstream by you g33kst3rz, and to a lot of you the ones above probably are too.

Huge huge fan of Microcabin's Kokuu Hyouryuu Nirgends on the PC-FX. The only RPG / ADV / Flight Sim combination I know of - awesome atmosphere, fucking stunning visuals (for when it came out). Overall, top notch game, maybe the best on the FX. Only ever released on the FX and for Japanese Windows 95.

Yeah, Flashback was pretty well-know and popular back when it came out. I mean, it even had a sequel (Fade to Black), so I don't think you could really call it that obscure, no? :p

Vandal Hearts was a fantastic little game, good call on that one. The death animations were hilarious and they really added a lot of personality- I don't think I had seen that much over-the-top blood since MKII.

I beat it once and then was going back through in an effort to make Ash a Vandaleer (or whatever his super-mega-awesome secret class was), and thought I had collected all the little hidden trinkets you needed. Then I got about 20-25 hours in and realized I had missed ONE hidden chest. Gave up and didn't try that again. Just an odd little aside there.

My fave obscure game is the most obscure thing ever! Its OBA-SAMA-KUN on the Pc Engine by Namco.

Its a fun little platformer where you play a guy who turns into a cat when you pull down, changes into a bat, has a helper who throws chicken legs at enemies, has a helper who is a helicopter with jesus's face and does karaoke infront of turtle shells to get items.....

And thats just on the first Level!

I loved Chew Man Fu for the TG16. I don't think that sold a lot.

Ninja Crusaders (Sammy) for the NES.

Angel Devoid (PC) - Old as shit cyberpunk point-and-click adventure game, really good atmosphere though
Metalstorm (NES) - An excellent shmup that nobody ever mentions
Crusader games (PC) - Are these obscure, or just not well liked? They're awesome regardless

One of my all-time favorties-

Mad TV for the PC (available as abandonware if you look). An awesomely well put together TV station tycoon type game long before tycoon games were popular.

I love that game.

Also Uniracers for the SNES. Again with the 'x before y'... in a lot of ways, it was Tony Hawk's Pro Skater before THPS. If you at least consider the trick/combo aspect.

A super game that I honestly and truely regret giving away.

All of mine are for the PC (or DOS to be more precise), and from the day and age when literally anybody who knew some C or Assembly could make a game, so hundreds were flying onto the shelves every week. They just don't make 'em like this anymore...some would say that's a good thing... and if I ever played any of these again, I'm sure I'd be one of those people...

Lurking Horror - Old DOS "Zork"-like read-and-write game.
A Mind Forever Voyaging - Ditto
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Manhattan Missions - One of a hundred games I want to try and track down and play again before I die. A bizarre adventure game for the PC that I played to death when I was 8 years old. Really, really different and much longer than any of their other Turtle games. You had to equip characters with certain weapons and use different people for certain bosses. I consider it the best of the games that used the license.
Castle Of Dr. Brain -- "Edutainment" begins and ends with this title. A fun puzzler than "taught" you crap, too. I remember "Program the Robot" puzzle the most.

And last, but certainly not least...

A bizarre, ingenious, click-and-point adventure game mixed with puzzles. I remember playing this alot when I was little but losing horribly at it. They made a couple sequels, but I remember them sucking.

Also Battle Beasts, a Street-Fighter like fighting game with great, cartoony graphics but horrible controls. You picked either a dog, a cat, a fish or some other robot animals to fight to the death, working your way up to the frog robot.

I played Poy Poy and its a pretty cool game but Treasure made a similar game for PSX called Rakugaki Showtime if you like poy poy youll absolutely LOVE Rakugaki .

Oh dude! I loved that friggin game when I was a kid. If you track it down, let me know too lol. Funny thing was, I think my version was broken, I literally couldn't win without using the level skip code. One of the bosses, I don't remember which one, but when he died, the level never ended, so it just kinda got stuck until I used the level skip.

One of my favorite PC games that almost no one I come across has ever played, Afterlife. A great LucasArts sim from the 90's that gave you control over Heaven and Hell simultaneously. I easily lose hours playing this game, and anyone I show it to wants to know how to find a copy.

I think there were 2 sequals, actually, but I'm not too familiar with the series. The same team did a similar game for the PSX called "Heart of Darkness". Much worth playing if you enjoy that style of "game".

Another World/Out of This World and Heart of the Alien are independent (storyline-wise) from Flashback and Fade to Black.

Most obscure arcade favorite game for me always was and always will be Psycho Soldier. I own the pcb and haven't seen many around in the arcades even when it was a new game ;)

Critical Blow is a really good fighting game. I used to own it. I'm almost certain a sequel came out.
