Trying to beat PS3 to the punch...
Makes some sense, given the MTV unveiling coming so soon and all.
Still, releasing first probably won't be enough to beat Sony's unexplainable brand loyalty.
if it's true i can't wait, it's gonna be a good xmas, and it could be a smart move, as long as it's not rushed and they have a solid launch of titles, because there will be no Halo this time to carry shit, because they will sell a SHITLOAD of those this xmas, since nothing else new will be out. all the systems are old, esp. the PS2, people want new shit.
if they can sell 3 million units in 2005 like that article says, that would be a huge blow to sony, since the PS3 isn't expected till mid 2006 or later. and who knows what nintendo will do, but i doubt anyone cares at this point, they'll have their niche like always, but i don't see them outselling anyone.

Hopefully the XBOX sequal doesnt look as shitty as the first.
and unless a new company comes out with a new system, i don't even think it matters whether the PS3 or xbox 2 sell the best, there have always been room for two systems, and nintendo isn't gonna outsell anyone anymore until they realize it's not 1992 and not everyone is 12 years old
Whenever Sony launches Nintendo has said they will launch.
This is a horrible move for Microsoft. While being first to the market looks good on paper, it really isn't. They will undoubtably get some of the 20,000,000 Xbox fans and others who want something new right now, but in the end I don't see it being a good thing. I see the DC all over again, except Microsoft will stick it out in the war.
you're joking, the dreamcast?Quote:

the dreamcast also didn't have major 3rd party support from companies like EA, which the xbox has.
i think its a good move. ps3 looks as needlessly complicated/expensive as the psp with crap supposedly in it that i dont care about. this gen seems so old even though the games still look nice enough so if the box is released in october that will be a huge blow for sony. the xbox was an EXCELLENT intro system for microsoft and it got them alot of fans. the hype meter is already going overload with the supposed support by various popular japanese devs so i see nothing but good things for m$ this time around. if they offer FREE live i think this is where sony loses its hand and within 2 generations its game over and were all on somewhat level playing fields.
AS long as they don't force a bundle with 5 games down my throat I'm all fir it.
I'm pretty excited about this, and I think it's a smart move by Microsoft. That being said, I think Microsoft is also going to have to pay a price for getting in this early. To make sure that their machine isn't underpowered when the other two big systems come out next summer/fall, they're going to have to make their system cutting edge by today's standards, and I predict that they're going to again have to take a big hit on hardware losses.
Anyway, I'm hoping that they go ahead and launch early. I've been rooting for M$ since they've been very open-minded about the whole 2D scene. I think that's what this business needs to stay thriving.
The decision to go with flash ram over a HD seats the 360 in the lame and/or ghey section.
hard drives are dated technology, so i don't see your point.Quote:

The Xbox is about a dozen systems in one thanks to its HD and emulators, without a HD and emulation there really isn't any reason for me to bother with the 360.Quote:

i don't know if you've noticed, but the north american market has made or broke a system more than the japanese market since the 32bit era. the saturn tanked in america yet did respectable in japan.Quote:

That's just stupid. You can't win if you don't take Japan. Which is why Microsoft has been snapping up all the developers of popular Japanese games for the past months to get them to develop Xbox 360 games. Cause it constantly was outsold by the damn Dreamcast and is really an afterthought there.Quote:

The ps3 if i remember has Blue ray and i know for a fact theyre using Cell Technology Which is a chip owned by sony and claimed to be an amazing piece. Sony has many technology ups in this round, but at the same time with blue ray and HDDVD being new their games could make neo-geo carts look like bargain bin stuff. Also cell technology hasn't been perfected. This is really a toss-up between technology VS durability and if after X-box1 we know which system is on what side
I'll get it if it has good launch titles. I was pissed when I bought my PS2 and wound up playing my 64 and Dreamcast all the time. And whats flash memory? And is it better then a HDD?

It's just portable. I like it for my MP3 player, but I'm not interested in it much. I thought the HDD was one of the best things about the Xbox. I was even happy when Sony annouced theirs. Without support though it was pointless. I guess its considered a cost that was never really used so it became pointless.
Depending on launch titles, I will consider buying it. I think the xbox 1 had a pretty good run, and I definitely favor it over ps2 any day.
im gonna get the xbox2 and the ps3 of course but the xbox2 looks really sweet! games like morrowind 4 and ghost recon 3 have me drooling (have you played ghost recon 2? wow!).
i think the 7/8 month window on sony could actually pay off big time. with a lead on the installed user base, a 7/8 month lead on game generations (1st generation games always seem like shit when compared to those of later generations in hindsight) and a much bigger range of games on the market by the time the ps3 hits with maybe 10 games at lauch, well.... microsoft might just take the crown off sony..
You say that because you live in the US. Maybe the Turbo Grafx failed in the US, but the PC Engine was a massive success in Japan. About 1000 titles released there and and along life time (1987-1995). And the games are almost always released in Japan first.Quote:

All that said, I don't think MS will pull ahead with this. It is very much like the DC launch in many respects. Yes, MS has more support from 3rd parties, but realize that all 3 platforms are being highly touted now at the same time, even with little info. Everyone is now aware of the disaster the DC was from a marketing and sales point of view, so steps are sure to be taken that the other companies won't let you forget about the coming of their machines.
And also look at the PSP as an example of technology not blasting down doors. It is brand new and very high tech, but it is not blowing away the technologically inferior DS by any means.
And yes the fact that the XBox has a harddrive is a huge reason many people buy it. No, the company doesn't plan on the mod/emu scene, but that's the reason many many people have it (that and Live, which MS would be stupid not to make free in the next gen). But you can bet that they will not have hard drives standard or maybe even at all on the new product. They are VERY aware of how easy that makes piracy.
The DC has launch has almost NOTHING in common with the potential XBox 360 launch. Sega's name was mud in the US after the failures of Saturn and the numerous Genesis add-ons. This doomed DC from the start, since consumers were quite enamored of the PlayStation brand name (and you can't underestimate the importance of selling the PS2 as a DVD player at that time either). Microsoft's XBox, however you want to cut it, was quite a success. No, it didn't dethrone Sony, but it's got them in a prime position to take advantage of people jonesing for a new, sexier piece of hardware. PS2 had the clear-cut advantage of offering DVD playback right out of the box, and that was a large boon toward helping them sink the Dreamcast. There isn't going to be much of any significant technical advantage between the systems this time, these may be the most similar consoles ever released within the same cycle, so I believe timing and word-of-mouth is going to be a hell of a lot more critical. Sony's the king of the hill, and there's only one way to go when you're on top.Quote:

Sega screwed the Dreamcast up on their lonesome. Poor marketing, poor job securing 3rd party support.
Without any significant software release coming with the XBox 360/2/Next launch, there will be little reason for people to buy it in the face of a huge marketing blitz that is sure to precede the PS3 and possibly Nintendo Revolution launches. The $250 that it's going to cost is not a decision made lightly.
I don't see how being first will hurt anyone either. The PS2 came out before the Gamecube and the XBox, and the PS2 is still considered to be the frontrunner for the current system wars. And look how dated the games appear on PS2 compared to the others.
It's all about the games, just like before. Whoever rounds up the best 3rd party titles will win. XBox 360 may have a better chance this time around, signing deals with huge game designer names in Japan. I really hope that the system wars are more competitive for the next gen, because we all win if great content keeps churning out.
BTW, when is PS3 slated to come out in Japan? If it's this year, then I don't think it would be as different as XBox 360 coming to the US this fall.
I believe a TG-16 with the CD add-on at the time was about $400, correct me if I'm wrong. Hell of a lot more expensive than the average CD player at the time. Standalone DVD players were hovering around the $150-200 range when PS2 debuted. It might not have been huge for you, but I know a LOT of my customers thought of the PS2 as a smoking deal, being an all-in-one video game/movie player. I believe it really helped the machine, and NO, you didn't have to drop any extra coin, in the US it played DVDs right out of the box (in Japan, 1st gen machines had to have the DVD drivers saved on the memory card). With XBox you had to buy the remote.Quote:

The grapevine says that MS has made some massive headway amongst the big Japanese developers, due to their hardware power and ease of programming, so we'll just have to see.
Some of you guys are blind.
The PS2 does not have the worst looking games by a long margin. The Ps2 is capable of ground breaking graphics with the right team and money spent on it.
GT4 runs in 1080i at 60fps.. And look at Burnout 4 :loco:

That is a PS2 screenshot.
Sure most PS2 games are crappy looking, but its not the hardwares fault. Every console has its hot shot games. Anyway, I hate people that judge a game by its graphics, my favourite games in 128bit are Ico and Prince of persia SOT. Hardly graphically advanced in this day and age.
The PS2 is essentially a last gen system along with the DC. The Xbox and GC were really an entirely new one. That's where the problems arose. Currently the market is being forced to advance. It's only been 4 years since the Xbox and GC launched. The PS2 did 5 years ago, and games like Phantasy Star Universe and Gran Turismo 4 have maxed it out. The GC and Xbox seemingly have a lot more potential though.Quote:

Games... where are the new games?
I think microsoft will have a hard job lauching this new console without a killer app (i.e the same effect Halo had)
That is a PS2 screenshot....taken directly from a development system with a hell of a lot more RAM and shitloads of anti-aliasing which doesn't f'n exist on the actual PS2.Quote:

There is almost no comparison between PS2 and Xbox as far as good games go. If you want to be really serious about it, there are probably about 100 MUST OWN titles for PS2 and about 4 for XBox. Hell, Gamecube has more...which is even more sad.
So, I think I'll be staying home instead of waiting in line this XMAS.

This is the biggest BS argument ever. There's plenty of excellent XBox titles.Quote:

Those are all either games that are US XBox exclusives, or offer online play not present in the PS2 counterpart. MORE than enough reason to own one.
I love a lot of PS2 games, but seriously, you're only deluding yourself about the quality of the XBox library to make yourself feel better about not owning one. If you're a serious gamer who wants to play the best titles out there, realistically, all three current systems are worth owning.
Racing is a sport :cool:Quote:

Halo/Halo 2 - overrated. 1 was OK, but 2 was pretty weak.
Star Wars: Knights of the old Republic - SUCKED
Panzer Dragoon Orta - Great game!
Doom 3 - So far i like it (though im playing 1&2 more)
Rallisport Challenge 2 - havent played it. there are many rally games on PS2 as well.
Splinter Cell - i doubt you would notice the difference if you only played the PS2 version.
Jade Empire - out yet? sounds similar to kotor anyways, which sucked.
Outrun 2 - MEH. i suppose if you like outrun its ok. I dont.
Street Fighter Anniversary - available on ps2, online sucks ass with lag.
Project Gotham Racing 2 - shit game. GT3 is better, and GT4 even more so.
Crimson Skies - gets old fast. worth renting though.
Metal Slug 3 - on PS2
CVS2 - on PS2
That was a pathetic list, if thats the best its pretty sad.
I have an xbox, and i like some of the games, but i wont be getting xbox2 unless there are more good exclusives.
Maybe live will be better for fighters by then, as thats the main reason i got an xbox. Im completely off the idea for now, as the lag really ruined it.

Why is Microsoft spending money out the ass for Japanese developers?
To make more money. Of course Microsoft wants money. But that doesn't mean Japan is the "make or break" country anymore. Hell, we saw this with the Saturn.
Of course they want a better showing in Japan, if they want more money they need the Japanese market. But to say Microsoft's consoles couldn't survive off the European and American markets alone is plain ridiculous.
I never said they couldn't survive, but they can't win. 80,000,000 PS2's > 20,000,000 Xbox's.Quote:
