Anyone miss Dataeast?

I miss their games, even the crappy ones.

Not to mention their logo intro owned.

Of course. They brought out some decent arcade ports during the NES days.
Kid Niki, Ring King, Karate Champ, and Breakthru were great.

And the arcade version of Heavy Barrel is still one of my favorites.

rockhoward 01-18-2005 01:35 PM

I would love another Magical Drop...

BioMotor_Unitron 01-18-2005 01:48 PM

Their RoboCop arcade game kicked arse, as did many of their other games. Supposedly the RoboCop arcade game was supposed to come to GBA back in October 2002, but I don't know if it ever did.

Dallas_Five 01-18-2005 02:13 PM

Without Dataeast, the world would have been deprived of one of the best and brightest videogame stars of all times.

http://firteen.com/articles/karnov.jpg

oh yeah, and Burgertime fucking rocks.

More importantly, if there had never been Karnov, there never could have been Dance, Dance Karnov!

Yes, BurgerTime fucking rocks.

Magical Drop is probably the crowning achievement of Data East, in my eyes. Even though they made some nice other games.

I'm just so glad to have the priveledge of having the only great Magical Drop portable game in existance, on the Neo Geo Pocket Color.

Still, MD3 is one of the best puzzlers ever, and I'm kind of mad that I could never get the Saturn port of it.

I have Chain Reaction, MD2, and MD3 on Saturn. :D

My favorite DataEast game is Midnight Resistant :)

Bad Dudes and Captain America are good also
Don't forget those FMV games (Road Avenger, Cobra Command, Time Gal, etc) :drool_2:

Well said. That was the first arcade game I remember playing, after the MVS and holds some of my fondest gaming memories :)

did you mean to post this in your Wolfteam topic?

edit- shit, my bad. Road Blaster/Avenger and Cobra Command arcade games were by Dataeast, but i guess Time Gal is from Taito according to http://www.dragons-lair-project.com/games/ and KLOV.

Garland Russell 01-18-2005 03:05 PM

To be honest, I'd rather have them stick around than EA, even though they do have some great games.

John Mosby 01-18-2005 04:01 PM

Great games from the Data East era: Magical Drop 2 & 3, Cobra Command Laser game (they also marketed a scroll-shooting version of CC). Heavy Barrel, Robocop, Karnov and of course the classics BurgerTime and Bump & Jump :buttrock:

Midnight Resistant owns, and no snes port. ;)

John Mosby 01-18-2005 04:25 PM

Data East List of Games over on the KLOV site. Many cheesy games but many bring back memories :D

Crazy Horse 01-18-2005 04:50 PM

I miss the fact they're no longer around as a company, but I don't miss their games as I own a good deal of them. Shit I'm playing through Dragon Ninja right now... err... well I was playing it like 20 minutes ago anyhow. Shit, I'd rather have them make a "Come Back" than to see EA buying up everything.

I was thinking yesterday that Bad Dudes would make a good 80's spoof movie. Much like Starsky and hutch was for thier genre.

roker 01-18-2005 05:24 PM

I miss them, but not as much as I miss Technos

I loved their beat'em ups, high quality (though title for the best beat'em up ever goes to Capcom's Final Fight)

I wish I could agree on this, but something tells me Hollywood would find a way to fuck up even a Bad Dudes vs. Dragon Ninja movie. ***Remember what happened to Double Dragon???***

:oh_no:

Now in the right hands, I could see it. It have to be filmed in the manner of the old 80's Golan-Globus Production movies, where it's a camp film but the film actually takes itself seriously... American Ninja was one of their films along with Invasion USA. Campy but serious... but today it wouldn't be a Israeli film company making extremely violent/campy flicks to entertain, instead it be made by the likes of Jerry Bruckheimer and be over the top and just stupid.

Well Michael Dudikoff is "THE MAN" anyhow. I don't care what ppl say about the dude. He was bad ass as Joe in the American Ninja movies, he was bad ass in Platoon Leader killing Viet Cong and NVA... and he single handedly took on the middle east in The Human Sheild. Don't know what ole' Dudikoff is doing these days though.

Captain America and the Avengers (great beat-em-up)

Heavy Barrel (terrific overhead shooter)

Karate Champ (one of the first great vs. fighting games)

John Mosby 01-18-2005 06:56 PM

Always wondered if there was a plain "Magical Drop" game before the 2 or 3 and I found it. This came out a year before Magical Drop 2:

Scuz39 01-19-2005 01:30 AM

I was always a fan of Side Pocket for the genesis myself... for some reason that game was a blast to me as a kid. (great into sound to :) )

barf 01-19-2005 02:08 AM

I loved their pinballs... (found memories)

John Mosby 01-19-2005 07:50 AM

Data East has some good pinballs. Laser Wars was their first one and another our game room use to have was Secret Service(in digital stereo). Data East left the business and sold their pinball line to Sega, who in turn sold it to Stern, which today is the ONLY pinball company left in the world.

Tron 01-20-2005 06:01 AM

Yeah i miss DataEast for.

Magical Drop
Robocop
Heavy Barrel
Bad Dudes
Bloody Wolf
Burger Time
Karnov
Etc.

Befor i forget *cough*cough*

I always liked the artwork from dataeast corp. As well as the game two crude dudes on the mega drive, not a great game but still quite fun none the less.

jeff bogard 01-20-2005 02:06 PM

windjammers was actually fun. I can't think of more titles as of right now that i've played..

Tumblepop was played a lot in the arcades, if I remember right...

And Spimmaster was very fun, this is one of the best games for the Neo.

Ah! A great Bubble Bobble/Snow Bros-esque game with the memorable "YOU DID IT!" voice upon completion of a stage!

I have Chain Reaction for Saturn, as well as MD2 and MD3. There is a game for SuperFamiCom that is simply called Magical Drop, if I recall correctly.

Gideon Welles 01-21-2005 06:08 AM

For the company that's responsible for making my favorite puzzle game.

One love.

And yes, Bad Dudes was the shizzle.

Tron 01-21-2005 07:28 AM

Does any body remember this old DataEast game?

And we bumped a year-old thread, why?

I assume you ran a search on "night slashers", found this thread and decided to post. Meh, I guess that's okay.
