Halo 2 Reviews/Opinions: Mine and anybody else's
I figured that I'd give an "average" guys view of the Halo 2 campaign. I wasn't a hardcore H1 player, but I did enjoy playing through most of the first game's levels 2-3 times. Warning, Spoilers may abound.
I just finished H2 about 2 hours ago, on normal difficulty. I played thorough about 70% of the game with a friend in co-op, so much of the game I saw in "wonderful half-screen vision".
I enjoyed the game. Finishing it wasn't a chore by any means. The graphics, sound, and gameplay were all as good as I expected (i.e. fun, but I wasn't "OMG my brain is melting this is so roxxxorz")
Highlights of the game were numerous, but my stand out moments are the "return to halo" levels and the point where the arbiter and the sarge join forces.
Bad bits of the game were pretty much universal to most non-retarded reviews I have read. Some of the levels were confusing, expecially in split screen. I can't count the number of times I lost track of which direction I was supposed to be going, and had to wander down generic corridors until I saw something recognizable.
Dark areas were also too common. What is this game, Doom 3? .The flashlight helped some of the dark areas, but playing as the arbiter was occasionally sucky as he lacked a flashlight. The level designers apparently never clued into this when lighting the overly dark covenant-viewed levels, and the game suffers.
Onto the ending: Yes it sucked. Unless Halo 3 (or more accurately, 2.5...) is waiting in the wings for a release within the next year, I don't understand why they would end it the way they did. It ended mid-cutscene, almost as if they had footage that continued, but just said "cut" and we'll split the game in half here.
Also, considering the ending, continuing the game on a next gen console would be retarded. Where are all the new weapons and vehicles etc. supposed to come from? Mid battle, a bunch of new stuff appears, gets new textures and abilites, and the battle continues on? Methinks not... (most good games get around this by actually finishing the story, and picking up somewhere else...)
It was a stretch just to add the brutes to the game. They were decomissioned, then recomissioned sure, but how much more of that can they pull out of their ass?
Again I'm left with the suspicion that bungie dropped the ball, or they've really finished the game.
Oh well, I'm sure I've left out 80% of what I should put down here, but the mystery surrounding the ending is probably the most discussable point!
