Finished Halo 2... *minor spoilers*

Ugh....

Ok, I love bungie.. I really do.. and the game rocks.

I'm pissed.

If there's one thing you can count on, it's that bungie will deliver a great story with their game.

What I got today was BLUE BALLS, CLIFF HANGING bullshit. I'm livid. This game is basically a fucking Halo rehash. It's the story of the first game all over again, except with more characters. The Arbiter stuff is interesting, but a bit contrived.

I know they were going with the whole Trilogy/Empire thing.. but it's been done before and better.

I'm gonna play it over again to see if I like it more.. and maybe beat it on the hardest level today, because you got more ending in the first one when you did that.

I mean, that's a pretty fast run through the single player.

Haven't even fired up the campaign yet, all in the multiplayer man. I'm sure I'll be somewhat pissed too when I get to the end as well, but you'll forget it all in the multiplayer. :)

Maybe they concentrated too much on the multiplayer to really change up the single player mode.

Maybe they spent too much time working on ilovebees.com.

I got it a few hours earlier than most. I think I only ate it 3 or 4 times. Once was against the Prophet, twice between the Towers because I kept respawning with the covenant sniper and an energy sword and barely and ammo... and right before the end when you have the room full of brutes and turrets with the Hunters that run into the room.

Tartarus was a joke... simple to beat.

I'm dissapointed in a lot of ways with this game. It's solid.. it's a better game than 95% of the shit released today, but I'm let down by the story.

I've also been playing bungie games for YEARS... they're just not that hard to beat anymore. ;)

I did like how they made the flood MUCH harder to beat. My adrenaline was pumping.... they also did a GREAT job of reducing the amount of ammo and weapons available and where it was placed... it made the flood a real challenge, not just backing up, pumping the shotgun and hoping you reload fast enough.


The dual wield machine guns suck, but that's because it's a realistic recoil.

Those Scarabs.. FUCK I wish I could drive one..... I thought I was at the end.

Preface some of that with a *spoiler warning* next time, mkay. I could have guessed it but I'd have rather been surprized bout the flood anyway.

Heh..

The vehicles suck, also.. taking them out with two rockets is cool when you're fighting them, but not when you're driving em... the bridge scene at the beginning is fucking AWESOME though. The Africa level *is now* my favorite level of any game... ever. It's that cool and the way it's paced and its scope is unbelievable.

Also, I'm a little annoyed with the lock-on rocket. Takes the skill out of using it. That was the great equalizer in bungie games.. if the weapon is brutal, it's hard to use with little ammo. Throw the balance off....

Can you confirm that the level from the E3 video a couple years back is not in the game? New Mombasa or whatever? Because I saw the cinematics for level two and it was the same as in that trailer, but the level looked totally different.

Nope, completely different. If I remember it quickly, it was a large, on-foot battle zone. this one is only like that for a short while and completely unlike it.

I was looking for it too, but I like this version WAY better. Taking the bridge in a scorpion is fucking unreal....

The thing is, when you translate the rocket to multiplayer it becomes completely worthless. It doesn't become a skill-less kill, because the thing tries to lock on and hit you chest level so side step and it whizzes right by. Whereas in Halo everyone knows to aim at the ground not at the body. Rockets are worthless in 2 :/

Back to Halo 2: Nice work setup you got there, our biggest claim to fame is just getting a conference room and taking an hour lunch for deathmatch.

Of course the errands of the day have multiplied about a bajillion times. I'm going to go fix some blinds and then head on Live. If you get on live at home tonight check me out in your friends list and send an invite or just join the game I'm in. It'd be nice to face off in something other than a fighter, but something tells me I'm gonna get my butt whooped by the Bungie fanboy.

EDIT: You wouldn't happen to know what ports XBox Live tries to use would you? I was thinking of setting up some forwarding to boost speed because of the NAT.

I was really interested in hearing VT's take on the game, since he's the biggest Bungie fanbois I've ever seen. I'm really torn over this game, I feel immensely cheated, but at the same time, having started playing the English copy (I beat the French one twice, I'm not in a real hurry to beat it again) I have to say I'm really enjoying this game, despite my best efforts. And despite the fact that people were saying the leak WAS final, it is not, as I'm noticing some minor differences in legit version I picked up last night, hopefully lithy will comment on this:

-SMGS now hold twice as much ammo as they do in the leak, I was never able to go above 180 rounds with dual SMGS, now I can hold 360
-The damage ratio seems to have been tweaked, Elites go down slightly faster than I remember in the leaked version, as do Ghosts. I haven't encountered the Brutes yet, but I hope to shit they go down a bit easier.
-The Covenant Carbine now blows, I was a machine with it in the leak, now on the first Arbiter level, I ditched it in favor of dual Plasma Rifles
-Plasma Rifle/SMG combo is deadly for the MC, I don't remember it working so well in the leaked version
-The Warthog handling seems to be more in-line with the old style, in the leak it was very precise, as opposed to the "fat-ass" handling from the first game.

Most of these are probably subjective, but the SMG ammo count is not. Whatever, I really want to LOVE this game, I just can't so far.

I'm now a sucker for the dual needlers, though. Finally a use for it!

I prefered the carbine, but only for specific instances and as a secondary weapon. They're real good for taking out those bug thingies.

I don't like the way the dual wield was done 100%. I'd have rather had my dual combat shotties back from the Marathon series, though.... I think it unbalances the game because of all the uses it has.

I'm used to Vid Master challenge type of shit and being able to mow down both sides at the same time (flood and covenant) takes the skill and excitement out of the game. Give me two weapons and make me choose who to fight, not left hand for the Elites, Right for Rangers.

I understand where they're going and I'm not going to cling to it. This game was built for Live and multiplayer with the story, while still big, taking a backseat to that. Single player was just too easy with the dual wield. I may play through again on legendary and just limit myself to single wield or one weapon altogether and see what happens.

Couple more questions bout the game:

Is it just me or are grenades just far less effective in this compared to Halo 1?

Is there any way to change the battle rifle from firing 3 round bursts to single or full auto?

I've also found that the covenant pistol/smg combo is great in multiplayer. Charge the pistol, nail them and spray with the machine gun, takes people down real quick. I'm still working on getting the timing down to keep charging the next pistol shot for the next victim. Lots of fun with this combo.

Wasn't the needler supposed to be good this time around? The thing seems useless when I get online with it.

The Warthog can turn pretty precisely (at least do incredibly short 180's) with the handbrake. You can take some nice drifting like turns with that thing now, it's almost like playing Burnout 3. God bless that handbreak.

Also, it seems that you get a lunging melee attack when you have someone in your recticle with the SMG. I haven't really tried this much with other weapons, but I've noticed a few lunges when doing melee's with the SMG.

Oh and the plasma sword PWNZ. It really is the bitch stick.

Something else that I'm on the fence about is the AI. They took a couple of things away, tactically, but left a few tricks in. I don't know if I like it as much as the first (while stupid, did present a challenge in parts) or even as much as M:Infinity (the apex of FPS AI intelligence)

Circling large groups while firing and getting them to off each other is still there... that's a great tactic for later in the game when you have a large group after you....

There were a few too many parts where throwing on stealth or just skipping through the section altogether worked. Fight or Flight is ok, but it's supposed to be HARD to skip through, not just a quick run through a section.... it should be a challenge either way.

I kept thinking throughout the game... this is the first game with better graphics. Not all the time, but for siginifigant stretches. I like how it harkened back to their Marathon style more than Halo, but it was more than that... rehash, especially on the halo levels.

I will qualify that with the fact that it was another halo... so I can't say if it's chicken/egg.

The new levels were good, though... specifically the First Arbiter/Station level... FUCKING WILD!!!! The earth level... and the homeworld. The homeworld, however ws repetitive.

The fight against the prophet really reminded me of "All roads lead to Sol" from Marathon 2, but it wasn't a carbon copy. just a nice "impression" from that. M2 players may know what I mean by that.

Ehh.... I'll have to play it more to really decide..

You *need* to dual wield. When it puts seven needles in someone in a sec, and takes out their neighbors, it's bliss. It's only good for large groups and QUICK firing. I was making sure to stand right near more ammo when I had them and could just keep steady firing up. Works INCREDIBLY well on the prison level and you're firing down on the brutes.

After putting in about 5 hours into the game. Half online and half in story, I can say that the story really is a let down. If I were to play the story on one or the other, I would keep Halo 1 for the story mode.

With that said, the online part is GREAT. I mean really really great. I've played one on one all the way up to 16 player matches, and it's all kick ass. When J.Hendrix, Milk Man X, Loopz, and Stinky all got on last night, we were just sitting there amazed by the game online. It's really that good.

So, the single player is a joke. And yeah, I'm with JHendrix: I thought the needler was supposed to be worth half a damn this time. Seems to be the same gun. Oh well.

I played co-op for about 5 1/2 hrs as soon as I got in at 2:00. It didn't think much of single player and I am glad I didn't. Bungie kept it a secret for a reason. They blew it or just only cared for multiplayer. So far I only had a few exciting moments in SP (new enemies and vehicles). Other times its just "I did this before". At least MP is 10 times more fun. Maybe I should finish it to see how it ends.

Agreed, it is a piece of shit. I don't care what other people say on this board, it was nothing like the first. Sloppy looking, Worse graphics, Worse multiplayer, Worse weapons, the list goes on...The worst thing of all is that I bought it.

I will play it online though, since that is atleast decent and trading the game in now would only give me around $25 credit.

I guess you never played the original Halo online via XB Connect...I mean Halo 2 isn't bad online, but it is nothing compared to the first. I really wish they would release a Live version of the original Halo and get off the drugs they were on when they were making Halo 2 for 50,000 years.

Poor guess. I've played it for years on XBC. In fact, every other friday we have a huge get together, and play about eight of us vs all challangers with two big screens in the same house. The fact is H2's multi is just better. More options, voice chat, and better overall graphics and settings than the first. The bomb run with rounds, for instance, is much nicer. With that said, H1's multi-player online was very nice, too.

But, I say H2's best part, hands down is online. If you don't think so, then that's fine. Nobody's going to force you to play the game....

Other notes:

Dual Needlers = Insta-death; especially against Brutes, they fall pretty fast to needles

Plasma Grenades - I've gotten more use out of them this time around then in Halo, for whatever reason I'm just managing to plant them on enemies more often this time

Enemy A.I.- Laughably bad at parts (ESPECIALLY on vehicles, I can't even count the times I've seen Ghosts go rocketing up the side of some building, ejecting the pilot, or get stuck in corners, or simply RUN AWAY from me), sneaky and irritating at others. I don't know what Bungie changed about their AI code, but its really back and forth in this game.

Heh, I think our takes on the weapons are more because of what we were playing, you on single and me on multi.

Well I haven't used dual needlers in Multiplayer yet, but I'll make sure I give it a try.

The plasma sword on MultiPlayer is PWNZ, haven't gotten to it in SP yet. Just did some quick co-op with a friend of mine and yeah the cutscenes were pretty bad with things popping in. I mean it can't be that hard to get someone to fix that.

The framerate in co-op really dips down sometimes. Just awkward.

Oh well, back to the glorious, glorious multiplayer later tonight. :D

Is there a way to make your name online your profile name and not your XBL tag? Just curious...

The single player flaws dont mean much to me, although the texture-pop-up shit is pretty damned annoying. Honestly though, Halo 1's story was entertaining but far from original or groundbreaking. I played through it once with a friend, never went back since.

Online MP is un-fucking-believable though, despite how much I suck.

No offense, but even the greatest examples of basically ANYTHING you can think of aren't ground-breaking. They're recycled ideas that have been re-packaged and presented in a much better fashion than the source they were stolen from.

Jesus, just because your mind isn't expanded and your perspective unchanged doesn't mean the stimulus you encounter isn't the best of the best.

I honestly forget the number they told me in my Intro to Fiction class, that there's something like 8 basic plots ever or something to any story. And yes Halo's story isn't groundbreaking, nothing really is, but it was presented great and done well. 2 on the otherhand is a repeat of 1, in the same series that's just a little stupid.

Everytime I was going to start the sigle player someone would send me an invite to play some multiplayer. I like that you can play on single player and still get messages and invites via Live. I really never liked halo ever but the multiplayer is very fucking fun.

Well, what do you expect from an over hyped game. It's been hyped so much, Bungie knew they could have put out anything and people would have bought it. Halo 2's story is like those hot dogs that roll around on metal all day at your local gas station: they have been heated up all day long, but once you take a bite, they are nothing but nasty pig crap.

Nades have much smaller blast radius now, both in SP and MP.
SP Plasma Nades get a LOT of heatseek.
MP Plasma Nades get no heatseek.

Needler still sucks in multi :(
The thing just travels too slow, and the heatseek still isn't enough. Better, but not good.
I'm almost certain that the Battle Rifle can only fire bursts. It's supposed to take the place of the Halo1 pistol. Single shots aren't powerful enough to do significant damage.

Best combo I've found so far is plasma rifle and SMG.
1. Both rapid fire.
2. Plasma rifle can fire while SMG reloads.
3. Plasma rifle's stun effect makes SMG bullets hit more too.

I've yet to try the melee charge JHendrix spoke of... sounds interesting.

Defintely agree with most people's thoughts on this. Just picked it up yesterday morning, and have been on single player ever since. I never played or even saw the French leak. My thoughts:

- Enemy AI, as remarked on, is rather uneven. To me, Halo 1 had fairly predictable AI after many plays, but was at least even. With 2, it seems to me that enemies are oftentimes unbelievably stupid, or fairly smart.

- Graphics are definitely uneven - the first two levels have plenty of glitching, while the first Arbiter level is completely stunning.

- Music is great.

- New weapons are fun and mostly useful. I must say though, that I almost never use the Plasma Rifle anymore, although it was a bread-and-butter weapon for me in the first game.

- Look sensitivity seems way more jerky than it did in 1 - I had to set mine all the way down to level 1 to get what felt like a similar feel. Maybe this is just me.

- New health system certainly makes the game a bit tougher: it seems designed to prevent charging full-on into the midst of enemies.

- My main complaint is the uneven encounter scripting. Halo had terrific pace - even at its most frenzied, there was a smoothness to the encounters that really worked well. In 2, it seems like there are too many massive encounters punctuated by wide open spaces with no enemies. I really felt like the encounters weren't thought out or paced together well.

All this said, I'm still loving the game. Everyone seems to be raving about multiplayer - I played a bit of splitscreen with a friend, but maybe this'll be a good reason to finally get Live.

Chnaged my mind on single player a bit. The Earth levels, I feel, suck. It wasn't until I got to SPOILERS............. the second Halo that I thought it was good. It got much better for me, now. I am enjoying it yet again.

Exactly. It gets better in later levels. The 2 last levels are the best in Halo yet.
I love fighting Brutes.

Halo 2 gets a 9/10 from me now that I beat the game fully awake.
The only cons are the story and ending, the graphical problems, and the repetitiveness in some levels.
I wouldn't mind if they added all the stuff taken out, it would definitely improve the game if it worked right. The music is perfect. MP is awesome.


edit: YES! I got the unlockable map Foundation! And its in fucking Chicago in the future! I beat the game on Normal went back and replayed the last stage again and got it.
