Only the Dumb voted for Bush?

Seems to be the general feeling from the left that only the most ignorant of Americans, and the super ultra mega ridiculously rich, voted for George Bush last week. Except the truth is somewhat different according to some election polling done by Gallup: http://www.gallup.com/poll/content/?ci=13957

Scroll down that page and look at the demographic subgroup that shows percentages of votes according to education levels.

Postgraduate degrees: Kerry %53 Bush %47
College Graduate(no postgraduate): Bush %58 Kerry %42
Some College: Bush %56 Kerry %44
High School Education or less went to Kerry %54 Bush %46

Seems like the uber-elite(relatively small pool of people) and the GED group went to Kerry...while the regular, typically educated average American tended to go for Bush.

I read that in the NY Times today, they had it all laid out in their exception Week in Review section. It was striking how the far ends of the education system agreed.

As much as I hate the Bush administration, I won't even buy that theory that only the 'dumb' voted for him. Bush portrayed himself as the stronger candidate on questions relating to terror and national security, and a by a margin of 51 to 48, the public believed him. These are unparalleled times in terms of national paranoia, and in such times, the public tends to hang with the incumbent. Kerry served as the 'anti-Bush' candidate, but people really never came to actually support him.

The other funny story is that the largest voting block for Bush came from people earning $30000-50000 per year...not exactly the ultra rich. This is the middle class average American family.

I think this was a big factor. I heard that an incumbent president has never been voted out during wartime.

Well, those poll results fit well with party affiliation.

Many Canadians were kind of upset by the Bush victory. But this time there is really no reason to cry about it anymore. He won fairly and got the popular vote. Even if it was from stupid people it's no big deal.
Under Bush Canada can still dump all it's garbage in Michigan. Bush will leave us alone on the Iraq thing while Kerry would have hounded us to help. Some of the jobs that move out of the US tend to also come to Canada which kind of helps our economy get better. Kerry would have removed them.
As much as I hate Bush, at least Canada will still be a comfortable place to live :)

Right now all the columnists, exit pollsters, and 527 are tripping over themselves in the rush to dissect the electorate, as there has always been. It was John F. Kennedy's good looks that beat Nixon's, it was Dan Quayle's sex appeal that helped Bush defeat Dukakis, Clinton courted the Soccer moms, Bush in 2000 won the Arab-American electorate bloc in Florida, and now Bush won the security mom electorate bloc.

Let God sort them out.

A postgraduate degree doesn't always equal UBER-Rich either....and those %'s are pretty close....always 40-something to 50-something.

I personally think a lot of people just didn't trust Kerry because of his bouncing around on a couple of topics. Almost everyone at my work was rooting for Kerry and they all have postgraduate degrees and none of them are uber rich. There was even a cake in the staffroom saying have a piece if you voted for Kerry,lol!!!

I am glad Bush won....that's right, I said it! :glee:

I don't understand this statement. Of course the largest voting block for Bush was not the ultra rich. The whole idea behind 'ultra rich' is that there aren't that many of them. If there were, they would be 'average income families'. Even the ultra rich only get to vote so many times per election. The big campaign contribution money, influence and whatnot, is where their help comes in.

Your question shouldn't be "what percentage of the people who voted for Bush were ultra rich?"...the question should be "what percentage of the ultra rich voted for Bush?"

There's a big difference between the two questions. I'm not pretending I have the answer, although I have a strong suspicion which way it leans.

After listening to some stories on NPR last week, I have also concluded that many of those who voted Bush actually talked better about Kerry. Countries who support Bush also had Kerry supporters but those people were afraid of showing it.

You guys think that a little bit of "Election Oppression" was in the mix here? Some Kerry types almost pressured into "seeing the light" and voting Bush as per the status quo or something? :spock:

I can't buy that people voted for Bush because of paranoia. After all the people who are most in danger of terrorist attack voted Kerry. The average Texan or midwesterner isn't worried about terrorism. In fact I imagine that the spectre of a draft would bother a Montanan more than anthrax dusting the eastern seaboard.

The election seems to have been a triumph for negative campaigning.
Its been said that the more 'moderate' elements of the republican administration are more than a little uneasy about the price that this new 'evangelical' extreme voter is going to expect by way of payment for their support.

I don't think that its fair to simply say that those who voted bush are 'dumb', and I don't think that's what the non-dubya voting half of the US electorate (and the majority of the rest of the world) is trying to say. Many people in and out of the USA see the negative campaigning as being based on fear (of terror, the weakening of christian beliefs etc) and that the republican party has managed to capitalise on peoples fears which they have outrageously exaggerated, and spun with more than the usual political bias.
Fears are of course often founded on ignorance, although its a natural human reaction to forget that when gripped by the fear/flight response.
Some of those not 'gripped' by these 'fears' (or at least not believing of the spin) that pervaded this election think that it was won by fear caused by ignorance.
Hence the simplification, that dubya voters are in some way 'ignorant' or 'dumb' for falling for it.

Look at the pic in my sig, from a big UK national newspaper (albeit a shite one).
I think the answer is: 'They made a dumb decision, because they were scared into it!'

BTW, I DO think dubya's a dumb tool of the far right.

a lot of Americans who care enough to vote may also own or respect the right to own guns. Though I think I might be in a minority.

Even though there was a stint of time where the Ninja Turtles didn't have weapons, now once again they do, and they have fun using them against ninjas and other mutants. Perhaps people in general will also come full circle and understand how cool guns are, and we can get back to having fun and shooting people who drive badly and kids who egg houses and cars.

I said it in jest to tell you the honest truth. When one imaginary composite electorate bloc is proposed as the voting majority to pander to, everyone else loses out. Plus, just ask yourself these questions for a second:

Are you mega rich?
Are you less educated and without a graduate degree?
Are you l337?
Did you vote for Bush because you are, quote unquote, dumb?

Can you answer 'yes' to all four of these questions? If no, then I manage to carry the main thrust of my argument home, that the demographic in and of itself is irrelevant, and is not a revealing indicator of 'dumbness' and 'undumbness.'

Issues and policy is at the heart of the electorate, although there had appeared to be far too little of substantial debate on both during the campaign trail.

I am not saying that I wouldn't take more money if they wanted to give it to me, but I don't think a life long occupation should be chosen based on how much money you can make. Unfortunately what you may not realize is that the majority of people in this country do not want gay marriage. It's not a fear, people just don't want it.

But if you had any knowledge of things you wouldn't call it a perceived weakening.

I'd really appreciate it if you stopped trying to comment on situations in the USA because you don't live here and you really don't have any idea of what is going on in everyday life. I wouldn't comment on life in whatever country you live in regardless of how much I read about the country because it's not the same as actually living the life daily. Till you move here, don't comment.

It's kinda like Al Gore in 2000. Had he just won his home state of Tennessee in that election, he would have been President, regardless of the Florida outcome. Same idea. You have to look at the real reasons, and not sidetrack on to blaming these little subgroups of voters. The main issue was the War on Terror...Kerry lost that issue, thus he lost the election.

Actually he has every right to comment on what happens in the USA since it tends to affect the rest of the world a fair bit. There's no reason to attack him for expressing his views. So don't whine. Its a free world. He can say whatever he wants.

As for your problems with his comments, your view is fairly twisted. I know plenty of people who give their own time and money to fantastic volunteer-supported organizations, almost all of who really didn't want to see Bush back in office after his first 4 bungled years. These people do care about helping our world to be a better place, and aren't just focussed on themselves (unlike many who probably voted for Bush who could care less). I can't imagine how Bush could have done a worse job than he has already done over these 4 years.

You can't really effectively judge Bush currently.

In fact it really won't be something that can be judged for another few decades.

Reason being we don't know how his plans will essentially effect what happens in the future.

Historians initially slammed Dwight David Eisenhower as being a not so great president. The opinion is changing slowly.

Also keep in mind every president spends their first 4 years in office trying to get hopefully re-elected for another 4 years.

Let time tell how Bush turns out.

Meh, it's all about finding a reason why "real America" got "cheated" in the election. That map is quite ridiculous. So...whats it mean? That all the states that voted for Bush are slave owner states in 2004? I take it that map is supposed to suggest that the 'racists' voted in George Bush for president. Oohh..haha..heehee...so funny.

SHADDAP, YOU....I'm not making any assertions here...if there's anything that's to be found amusing here, it's KCs post where it suggests that the same states keep voting for the same party over and over again, regardless of who's the better candidate.
