i know there's going to be a few rejects who feel they have to voice how much they hate egm, or how cool it 'used to be'...but i'm making this thread anyways because it's interesting news.

Outrun 2 seems hit n miss across the board.

Goddamn, I can hear the money draining out of my wallet. MGS3! I didn't care for 2 that much but I'm desperate for 3 to turn me into a MGS fan again.
Halo 2 is just about out. I think I'm gonna wait for the initial hype before I get it.

I'd really LOVE to know why all ppl go nuts over Halo 2. Is it because of online play? Graphics? IMHO, the first one looks drab and gameplay is quite slow. Overall it plays kinda well but whenever I hear ppl talking about the new one, they say it'd be the end all and be all of FPS. Sounds highly unlikely to me.
Could anyone of you Halo fans step up and clear me up please. I promise I won't mention Quake! or Q3A. :)

The Single player isn't all that good. Tons of PC FPS have done better before and after Halo, but Halo still offers a great experience though it has a few dull moments.
Here's the thing with Halo. It's like a classic mix. Nowadays everything is either off the wall crazy space weapons (Unreal tournament, Tribes, etc) or super realistic war stuff (Call of Duty, Battlefield, etc). Halo is the good old classic mix of realism and fantasy, it walks the fine line between the two creating something fantastic but still believable. It has charm, it has style, but most importantly it's just plain fun. The story is also pretty good. Not overwhelming, but it plants seeds of greatness and it just makes you want more. There is also a TON of backstory material for you to delve into, which is great. I can't wait to see how the story goes in Halo 2, which is supposed to be much more story driven than the first campaign.
It also doesn't hurt that it's really the only FPS game to do this on console in years.
Multiplayer is also great, well implamented, and has an incredible feel of "pick up and play" that you don't get with PC FPS with newbies. It's also got a great pace. Not too slow and dumbed down for console, but not super PC FPS fast trying to be run on a controller. Of course it's hard for us FPS people to go using a controller and the slower pace, but if you can adjust and get some of your buddies to sit down and play I gaurantee that you'll get the same good old warm fuzzy feeling like you did when playing some classic Quake or TFC at a LAN party.
So yeah, Halo 2 takes all that and gives it online play. Happy are us in XBoxLand.
I bet that the fact that these 2 games were made in the US helped them getting perfect scores. that's what gamespot.com has been doing since the XBox launch. obvious bias toward US games.Quote:

I think A lot of people are going to be dissipointed when this hits.

All the hype surrounding this game has blinded people to the simple facts,
The Controll is garbage & the graphix are sub par.
The story is laughable with repetive missions & stupid characters.

Thanks for filling me in... thing is, I attended some Halo LAN parties but I didn't catch fire, so to speak. After playing older FPS games for years, I felt that Halo was a step in the wrong direction. Sure, the mix between reality and fantasy is kinda cool, but the whole humans-vs-aliens thing isn't really all that hot anymore, personally I prefer a darker tone and kill-em-all, maybe I'm just spoiled by all the old stuff.Quote:

I disagree with you on Halo's score, but you may be right about being let down by it. The amount of hype can't stop that from happening. As for GTA, I couldn't agree more. The shooting controls suck, the fighting is lame, the driving controls suck, and the graphics stink. That's a LOT wrong with the game. I mean, don't get me wrong, I bought it and was excited, but after about 10 hours I thought "wait a minute, this isn't really THAT great". The scope? INCREDIBLE. I mean wow. But the play control really sucks. Why can't people see that? I mean, sometimes the view in your car while driving is hindered by the car itself, so I find myself pushing down on the right stick alot so I can see over the car. It's fun for a few minutes, but quickly turns to "meh" the more you play it.

I haven't played GTA: SA yet, but if the controls are like the previous games (and I'm pretty sure they are), then straight 10's is a little bit ridiculous. I have trouble believing that GTA is a better game than Metroid Prime 2, just based on history. The verdict's still out on Halo.

the games core is flawed as fuck and the ONLY thing it has going for it is its grand scale. straight 10's? fuck that. i have like 120+ egm mags from back in the day and i wouldnt touch that shit with a big ass stick unless i got a free subscrip over the net.
i just see way way too many 10's in those reviews. i mean 10 = perfection wtf is going on here i seriously doubt any of those games are perfect. the closest prolly being metroid.

I liked PSM's old scoring system:
5: you will like it no matter what, if you set your ass and played the damn thing
4: this is actually a perfect score if you're a fan of the genre
3: solid game. defenetly worth a try
2: suffers from minor problems that steal the fun
1: avoid and forget
thus, games can easily get 5's and 4's easily and you wouldn't bother deciding which is better than which. getting a 3 also means the game is actually excellent and high quality.
I think GTA:SA is a fun game. probably deserves 5 or 4. look at all the details and stuff. who cares about the control being "not perect" or if the graphics weren't as great as X game, as long as the it's really enjoyable at the end.
the problem however is with rating systems such as gamespot's and EGM's, when they use speciefic criterias to measure the overall score of the game, like how it utilizes the system's graphics capabilities, or whether it uses certain features or not .... etc.
naw that system is way too vague. i think ign has the best rating system and they rarely hand out 10's. egm needs to drop the 0.5 increments and adopt the 0.1 system. that way they can drop the score down as much or little depending on what they find wrong with it.Quote:

even Zelda OoT, the most admirable game, has problems such as low frame animation rate and annoying camera. just name one game in all VG's history that is flawless.
the point is, there can be problems yes, but how big these problems determine the game's score. also I can give both MGS1 and Castlevania SotN 5/5 for example, but I don't need to mention which one of them is better than the other.
this rating system will help as a guide for those who want to buy games, not for criticals.

Also, did anyone really not expect Halo 2 and GTA: SA to get perfect scores? The thing that really surprises me is that they scored MGS3 as high as they did. I assumed it would get straight eights. A lot of people have the whole "Raiden is gay, MGS2 sucks balls" attitiude, and a lot of EGM's reviewers strike me as this type of person. Like the chick reviewer, I can't remember her name. She writes some of the stupidest shit and it's obvious they just wanted a token "hot girl gamer" on their staff.
Yeah Jennifer Tsao writes some stupid shit in EGM. It's obvious that she doesn't "get" certain genres including RPGs and Fighters. Having owned the previous iterations in all of these high profile releases, there is no way Halo Me Too! or GTA: Same Game as the Last Two are better than Metroid Prime 2: Bad Ass Echoes.
Well, I have only played one of these high profile games, and so far it pretty much deserves what it got. I wouldn't go as far to say that GTA: SA deserved straight perfect scores, but it is an incredible game. I'm also sure that if any game deserves perfect scores it will be Halo 2. And it's not as if they gave MP2 BAD scores really, just that I know the things EGM will bitch about, and it's stupid.Quote:

It probably doesn't deserve all 10s but I like the game better than Vice City and 3. In this game at least they have changed a lot. You can also respond to random comments.

There are so many sweet things in this game, a faq about the timing and scoring systems alone would fill several pages, and don't get me started on the cars and tracks... but in the end, it looks that all this wonderful stuff will be doomed to go unnoticed just because some slightly biased game magazine reviewers (and not only them) obviously didn't bother to play it for more than a day before passing judgement.

i played or2 for like 10 minutes at eb the last time i was there and it seemed fun. id buy it for $30 or possibly even $40 if i really wanted a racer (doesnt happen often but i love arcade racers).

In my opinion I am tired of the GTA games. They are fun, no doubt, but littered with graphical and gameplay bugs THAT COULD BE FIXED! I know they are "legacy bugs" but come on Rockstar. The blatant pop-up, the flickering textures, and a lack of aiming can be and should be fixed.

Yeah, EGM has softened a bit to roll with the times, but it's still the best print videogame magazine, at least in the States anyway. It's just part of the experience.
I still get a bit of a buzz whenever there's a new one.
