So I'm currently running my retro stuff through a PVM-2950Q and the audio through the same.
for speakers, its a set of polk audio bookshelf speakers using the built in amp.
I'm not against throwing a little bit of money at it, but I'd rather not toss another $100+ at my setup right now.
but is there anything wrong with the built in amp of this PVM?

The service manual says the amplifier is 7W+7W for 8-16 ohms speakers, bundled ones being the SS-X6A kit. Basically it's rated for tiny speakers and more thirsty ones will not do well at high volumes.

Technically speaking, any half decent second hand 40 dollar hifi amp will be an improvement. If this is actually a noticeable improvement is up to your ears though.

I picked up an old Sony receiver at the thrift store and run the audio out to it. Sounds great.

I use an 80's Kenwood stereo amp and a set of headphones, best way to hear any old hardware you throw at it. One could say it's quite powerful when a Neo Geo is hooked up in stereo through a good amp.
