DVD bonus content, yea or nay?

Do you usually watch bonus content/features on DVDs or do you just say fook it and only watch the film? Are they a selling point for you?

Sometimes I do, sometimes I don't. I typically have no interest in watching the movie again with commentary from the director or actors, but, I usually will watch a stand alone "making of" featurette/interviews and I always watch deleted scenes or alternate endings. I usually read character profiles too.

I generally won't pay more for them, but, if price is negligible, I'll get the more complete version.

I will watch deleted/alternate scenes and the gag reel if there is one. Usually skip the rest.

I use the commentary analog tracks on laserdiscs to justify still owning and spinning them from time to time. I don't go out of my way for them, except in some rare cases commentary/extras are more interesting than the movie itself and you can't get them elsewhere.

Same. I usually watch one movie twice in two days, once without and once with commentary. And then I'll check out the extras / read the book if it came with one. Also, any movies with atypical effects are usually worth watching - A Scanner Darkly, for example.

Oh the commentary on stuff like The Office and Arrested Development are hilarious, by the way.

depends what it is. If it's a director I like, I'll listen to the commentary. Watch 'making of' stuff. Like John Carpenter, although he'll often go off topic and start talking about his kid's hockey game or whatever if he's doing the commentary with Kurt Russel.

I enjoy watching the “behind the scenes” and “making of” videos for pornos. Watching those remind me that the actors are just normal people like me.

Not big enough into anything to bother with the commentary track. Have tried it before but I really would rather just watch the movie with the regular audio. The making of/featurette bonus features I will check out depending on time. I watch most of my movies in the evening, so if it ends at a time that is too early to go to bed, I might check them out.

trailers are awesome, especially if you are ripping them for a media server. I have a whole playlist of trailers that I sometimes run as background TV.

Sometimes, there is a short film on there that is related to the main title or the director.
Coven (american movie)
It's Impossible to Learn to Plow by Reading Books (Slacker)
Boats and Hoes uncut (Step Brothers).

Some of the twilight zone discs have radio shows.

People still watch DVD's?.

This is the only true way to "own" a film. I think it's like records, retro vidya games, books etc... some people just like physical copies.

I have a dvd/blu-ray collection of about 500 films. I also collect books, I like having a small library at my place.

I only have a handful of DVDs/Blurays left but I'm mostly all streaming now. I almost never watched the special features and I almost never rewatch films in general.

That being said, streaming doesn't hold a candle to physical media. You don't realize how shit streaming makes the quality until you plop in a bluray and see how much better the bitrate can actually be, even now.

Absolutely - I'm more inclined to watch all the extras if its a serious film with a lot of context to learn about. I do generally buy based on whether or not this content is there for such films, but overall, similar to games, books, and records I enjoy just having a physical collection besides just everything digital, so for my favorites I'm buying the disc either way.

I've been watching Solaris and finally popped in the second DVD. It's mostly interviews but there are some decent tidbits. The booklet is great too - it has one really nice quick analysis and one quick story by Kurosawa about meeting Tarkovsky.

By the way, I don't have a ton of movies on DVD, but I have a shitload of '80s and '90s anime. I was kind of kicking myself for being dug in on DVDs for so long and now having to rebuy a ton of Blurays but I'm now seeing that a decent amount of Blurays / UHDs have been fucked with. One recent example is Ghost in the Shell. They changed the outro song! So I feel less bad about having one low res and one high res version when applicable.

I've never been one for the commentary, but I do enjoy the gag reel, deleted scenes, and making of features.

When i was a kid, I was into "Making of" features. This is of course, before DVD.
