HI, sorry to sound ignorant, but is there an actual difference between the Fatal Fury series and teh Real Bout Fatal Fury series, or are they just different names/regional differences etc? I have fond memories of playing Fatal Fury Special on holiday as a kid but have no idea wether it was real bout fatal fury special....

The Real Bout games are a continuation of the Fatal Fury series.
Fatal Fury 1991
Fatal Fury 2 1992
Fatal Fury Special 1993
Fatal Fury 3 1995
Real Bout Fatal Fury 1996/7
Real Bout Fatal Fury special 1997?
Real Bout Fatal Fury 2 1998
Garou : Mark of the Wolves 1999

Garou is essentially what Fatal Fury is called over in Japan (I think so?)
I think those years are right, someone correct me if I'm wrong.

I always thought Real bout was a remake of FF1. RB2 a remake of FF2 and RBFFS a remake of FFspecial. And I thought MOTW takes place 10-13 years after. The Special games are dream matches arent they? Wild ambition is also a remake of FF1. At least thats what I thought.

Nope.
Though there is a gap between RB2 and MOTW.
Right on the Wild Ambition too.
