This is just the tip of the iceberg (I've seen many applications asking your sexual preference !!!)...literally the top 3 ways employers discriminate. People fought VERY hard for these questions to NOT be asked of people applying for work. Insane. Anyone who doesn't see this as a huge step backwards is mentally retarded.

I can do you one better. The university I work for regularly puts "women and POC strongly encouraged to apply" in the descriptions of available positions on their jobs website. While it's not outright discrimination I'm not sure how that type of bias is legal. They've been doing this as long as I've worked here though.

¯\_(ツ)_/¯

EDIT: It's almost always listed in research positions in STEM fields.

Highly HIGHLY illegal - just currently normalized. All it takes is the first firm to take all of this on in a class-action lawsuit.

I can’t say all organisations are the same, but many I have worked for use this data for gender and diversity monitoring only as it gets reported on each year in their annual reports- it’s not so much used for ‘you must pick a asian guy to fill this role, you must pick a women as we have too many men, oh dear we don’t have enough hindus and non-binaries in roles…’

Right? The first time I noticed I showed my boss and she had no idea how the university was getting away with putting something like that in a job posting. Not like she could've done anything about it.

Oddly enough, one such research position that I was interested in and qualified for had that "strongly encouraged" blurb in their posting. I looked up the team via the school's website. Half were East Asian and the other half were Indian. I didn't bother applying. Still a wee bit salty about it.

Are they allowed to ask if the applicant is mentally retarded?

Technically no, but they DO! It's usually the last question with a drop-down of alllll the handicaps to pick from. So fucking doomed.

I’m hiring a Drexel University Intern this Summer. One young woman who applied put white, straight, female, Lutheran on her resume in its own section.

I did get my share of he/she’s on the resumes too, but they were actually less than last year.

Par for the course sadly, at least in tech. Curious, what type of job is this for?

Hasn't every online job app that isn't for a mom and pop company asked for this stuff since forever? I remember seeing it in the 00s.

Most of these drop downs have "prefer not to say" which is what I select every time. This is one of those cases where truthful answers can only be used against you.
I remember getting into the first wave of covid vaccinations in the city specifically because I selected my race as "prefer not to say". The local media said it was supposed to be POC only in the first wave of covid vaccines because... they were hit by it the hardest. Nevermind that I actually require to travel for my job. Either way, I got my jab with "prefer not to say" as my race.

I just left my job a few weeks ago and thus applied for a bunch of things and would just select "Prefer not to say" and I still got a slew of callbacks and responses. Not trying to diminish your outrage as you do you, but if you're not forced to answer then I don't really see an issue personally (being forced to answer is a different story.)

To an extent - it really sort of depends on the field as well. For instance, ad agencies are notorious for overly enforcing DEI to a fault. Its all contextual, but you are right -the "voluntary" loophole is at least something. But companies still file this data as part of their taxes, so there are a ton of variables that can lead to discrimination/abuse of said data. Regardless of it being voluntary, it needs to go.

I can add that my company gives all leadership quarterly reports on their POC and Women percentages. The recruiter also made sure all my new applications had POC and women before I could start the process.

Meanwhile, my wife works in an industry where 95% of her team is consistently women. One department was 38 women, 1 man.
HR/Payroll.
