Mercury Rising (1998) -- The first take in this movie is a methodically filmed chopper, that slowly, very slowly, approaches a small town, accompanied by another excellent John Barry strings arrangement. It accurately sets the pacing and the mood of Mercury Rising since it's not an action packed pop-corn flick, it's an odd-ball buddy movie.
I always liked Harold Becker films, though not perfect, they had this biblical morality inherited, to turn their viewers into better human beings after the screening, without entirely resolving how. It's not different here, because, despite all efforts of a heroic because nobody else is F.B.I. agent, the condition of a savant won't and can't be healed. Bruce Willis fills the shoes of the story's beleaguered hero with ease and a 12 year old Miko Hughes is stunning as the teenage version of Hoffman's Raymond Babbitt. Alec Baldwin's baddie, whose patriotism is only surpassed by his love for premium wine and a long-haired German shepherd, is a nice extra. Recommended.
