Finally got around to watching Thor: Ragnarok and Last Jedi.

I thought Thor was really good. Funny, good action sequences, not too long, sets up Infinity War.

Last Jedi I don't love but it's not as terrible as some here led me to believe. The casino scene should have been cut entirely. Still not a great movie without it but a better one. As it stands it's still better than the prequel trilogy or the theatrical Clone Wars animated film.

12 Strong - slow as hell for the first hour, then it gets into usual war movie territory for the second half. Leans into more tropes of the genre than anything I've seen in a while, and I can't decide if that's endearing or not. Oh, and William Fichtner looks pretty weird bald.

Saw Avengers Infinity War. As much as I'm sick to death of comic book movies, I was actually looking forward to this one as it's supposed to be the end of the 10-year arc of Marvel movies. Reminded me a lot of a season of Game of Thrones: there's 8 different sub-plots with various people we like making witty banter while they wait for winter/Thanos to come and fuck their shit up. While it was gutsy to end a major summer blockbuster movie the way they did, the ending is a giant who-gives-a-shit because death has zero stakes in a comic book movie where anyone can come back at any time for any half-assed reason. Plus a lot of the sub-plots are a giant waste of time and have the same basic theme ("I refuse to sacrifice the thing most precious to me to prevent Thanos from getting the stone!" <Thanos pops up> "I'll take that!" <yoink>). Not sure what they're trying to convey when Thanos is the only one willing to make the huge sacrifice to achieve his goals while the heroes are all selfish and/or lack foresight.

That said, there's a lot of fun hero-on-villain punchy-punchy and they don't waste a lot of time on the gratuitous, unnecessary CGI battlefield scene that seemingly all these movies are required to have now. Plus there's some pretty great deep-cut banter between the various characters who hadn't met up until that point. If you had told me 15 years ago that Marvel would get to do a long series of superhero movies, that most of them would be pretty good and that it would culminate in the Infinity Gauntlet story with like half of the Marvel universe in it, I probably would've laughed in your face but here we are. I guess what I'm saying is that I'm grateful that these movies exist but I probably would've cared a lot more if this was 15/20 years ago.

All The Way: when I think of famous presidents or presidents who would make for good movies, I didn't think of LBJ at all, but I really enjoyed this movie. Bryan Cranston was real good. Not an expert of American politics at all, but if this movie is accurate at all LBJ was a pretty interesting guy and president during a pretty volatile time. Is it true that Georgia had never voted Repblican before? They haven't voted Democrat since? Interesting stuff.

Also recently saw a movie about John McCain and Sarah Palin. Ed Harris played McCain and I thin Julianne Moore was Palin. Another real good movie. Don't remember the name of the movie though.

A Quiet Place (2018)

It's Emily Blunt who does the really heavy-lifting here, but great performances all round and expertly directed.

A superb exercise in understated terror.

Hostiles - Movie had a great intro but overall was a good film. Great performance by the cast. Dont regret watching but not planning to watch again.

Big Trouble in Little China - Decided to introduce this classic to my kids. Man they enjoy the heck out of it, its been awhile since i watched it but this is such a fun film.

Avengers movie - I really haven't like the first 2 avengers but man this was so good & Thanos did not disappoint. Going to have to pick up that Thanos statue next.

Might watch the Karate Kid trilogy again to get a nice refresher before watching the Cobra Kai tv series thats out now.

Hostiles - pretty decent. Kind of heavy-handed in the messaging, but still mostly entertaining.

You Don't Know Jack: movie about Jack Kavorkian. Al Pacino gives a pretty good performance. Good supporting cast (John Goodman, Susan Sarandon). All in all, good movie about an interesting subject.

Hell or High Water (2016)

Old West meets the modern West. A soulful crime drama about desperate brothers pitted against the system.
Great writing, top performances. And superb cinematography to boot.

Saw Super Troopers 2 on its last day in the theaters before disappearing.

I enjoy most of the Broken Lizard movies and the original Super Troopers was one of those right place, right time theater experiences for me. This one was pretty meh. A couple of genuinely funny scenes but there's a ton of recycled jokes from the first movie and a couple of running gags that just aren't funny (Flova Scotia). Even Brian Cox seemed like he was phoning it in which just makes me sad. If you like the original, watch this on cable or Netflix. Don't spend money on it.

I saw Casino for the first time. It's sad and hilarious at the same time. Great editing (which is usually something you don't notice unless it's done wrong). I loved the scene where the two main characters are talking in code and the editors put in subtitles to decode what they're say. Like one of them says, "See you at 6PM at my place," and the subtitle is "See you at 9PM behind the convenience store" or something like that. :lolz:

watched get out.

It was OK. Jordan Peele is a pretty good director, and a great comedy writer. But its like he wrote this after he got home from watching Being John Malkovich and getting pulled over by a jerky cop.

Bad movie? No way. Decent watch? Definitely. Amazing shit your pants at the oscars? Probably not. I want Key & Peele season 6.

Finally saw Black Panther. It was fine, as are almost all MCU movies, but not great. Nowhere near the level of, say Logan, just to name something recent. I kind of like how straightforward the story is, I guess.

I thought Logan was pretty mediocre. Took itself too seriously, some parts didn't make sense, got really cheesy, etc.

I rewatched Back Panther last night. I still think it's great. Probably in the top 5 of Marvel Studios stuff.

Marvel being cheeky getting a dwarf to play a "dwarf", I guess. Tyrion gotta eat too.

Is that Karou-speak for "you're a miserable fuck"? I'm great, thanks. Just not big on lazy comedy.
