Sega Mega Drive should work OK, but check which rev Neo you have first.

If it says pro-pow E or pro-pow 3 under the console a MD PSU will be fine.
Pro-pow or po-pow 2 and you need a stepdown

The PSU will probably say Pro-Pow as well as the console, and it'll be 5v

The PSU has the following written on it :-
AC 100v 50/60Hz 18VA
DC 10v 850mA

Nothing about pro pow or it being 5v?

Is this the wrong psu could this be why the system was sold to me as faulty?

Cheers for your help

It's worth a shot. They're not that easy to find so they aint too cheap. Eg:
£22 shipped

See if someone will lend you one first. I would but I don't have one ;)

Using the wrong psu on the machine won't blow it up or anything. All you get is a black screen.
I know as when I had 2 AES' I had them both out at once and put the wrong psu in and booted up.When I realised my mistake and put the correct one in all was ok.

it won't fry it if its the wrong PSU,I know as I have put the wrong psu in both machines in my time and suffered no adverse effects to either machine.
As your jap psu that you have already is

"AC 100v 50/60Hz 18VA
DC 10v 850mA"

Then you should just stick a megadrive psu in the back. They are usually 9v 1000ma and work fine.

The only way to be 100% positive on what you need is to open the Neo and look at the board. If you can take a photo and send it my way or post it here, someone can tell you what you need.

I have seen numerous Neo systems that stated one thing on the bottom sticker only to use the opposite power adapter.

Also, plugging a 9/10v adapter into a 5v rated Neo *can* do damage if left on long enough.

Saw the photo - you need the 5V power adapter (I sent you an email)...

As long as you haven't left it on for long, it should still be ok. You'll know more when you get the 5v adapter and test it.

If something is wrong and as long as the damage isn't in one of the SNK custom chips, then most likely yes, it can be fixed. I've had a couple people damage their Neo boards with the wrong adapter and it usually hit the video ram first.
