PlayStation 2 Fliptop Problems

First off, I really don't need any wiseass comments about how I should have just gotten a Japanese PS2 or a modchip. I'm looking into it more seriously now.

I finally got my version 4-6 PlayStation 2 fliptop cover and I'm sure I installed it correctly. However, whenever I try to load the SwapMagic disc, my system makes odd noises, like there's something tapping the disc every few seconds, stopping it from speeding up all the way. It will usually load after 30 seconds or so, but sometimes some of the graphics are garbled, obvious it's having some kind of disc read error. A huge problem though, whenever I try to start up any legitimate US/C-region game, there is what sounds like a rhythmic scraping and it doesn't start up at all. I've heard about fliptops being a little bit tricky and having to get the hang of it, but I don't get what the problem is. Looking inside the system when it is off, I don't see anything that could possibly get in the way, unless the disc is scraping thetop of the fliptop, I assume meaning it's unbalanced and wavering. Yes, the TOC disc that was included with the fliptop is in properly. This is driving me absolutely and I am really frustrated. Any help whatsoever means me love you long time.

Wonderful. Now that we've gotten that out of the way, can anyone actually help me?

I've got a fliptop and have never experienced this problem.

Did you note the orientation of the white disc that you had to take out of the original PS2 cover and put into the fliptop lid? From your description, the only thing I can think of is that you installed that white disc incorrectly, which would lead to any CD or DVD you put in there to not be held properly in the drive.

Yes, I did. I tried flipping it over, just in case, but it didn't go in.

Just out of curiosity, do you have the standard flip-top of the push button version? I've heard that the older push-button covers have some problems holding the disc in place.

I'm not entirely sure what you mean. It does a have a button that you press and it springs up, yes.

The originals, and the one I have, don't have that button, or the spring it is attached to. You just open the cover by hand.

Anyway, the problems I've heard about the older push-button lids is that the spring holds the lid (and the white disk in it) a little higher than it is supposed to rest, so the CD or DVD isn't held securely in the drive. The quickest fix is to put something heavy on the lid to hold it down. I forgot what more permanent solutions people have come up with, but I'm looking into it now.

Ok, found something that might solve your problem.

I had the same problem when I installed the fliptop...there was a loud scratching noise that was caused by the disk spinning. From what I have read, DO NOT put any sort of weight on it or your drive motor will get damaged!

I fixed the problem:...on the fliptop cover take out the white magnetic disk and there should be two very small screws holding the white disk in place. Loosen the screws(not too much, they are short). Put the white disk back and try again until the noise disappers...this will lower the white disk so the magnet can completely stick. The noise comes from the white disk rubbing inside the bottom of the holder. Lowering it just a touch will give it more room.

i'm totally missing something here what is a ps2 filp top?

Incredibly, PS2 users have found a way to make their wonderful machine even more unreliable - enter the flip top ....

:buttrock: :buttrock:

P.S. I'm not really sure why these things exist either. Anyone wanna give us a brief rundown?

First of all that "tapping" could be the disc having all it's tracks read. Flip it over, and look at the data side. Are there a bunch of rings breaking up track sections? My disc takes a while to load, and slows up and speeds down like you said. And the disc is seated correctly, as it's being put in the tray like any normal game/dvd/cd.

Might be the same disc as this. I have this product by the way, all I had to do was take off the little plastic front to the cd tray. Then use that little black plastic dongle thing there to push a lever back, and then pull it back.... Uh yeah I should have bought a import ps2. But it involves less destruction than the flip top.

Basically, it allows users to employ a boot disc method of playing imports. Whenever the disc drive opens, the PS2 resets, thus preventing swapping discs. With a flip top, you can change discs without using the the PS2's tray. Essentially, it is for those of us who don't want to install a mod chip.

added:
The other benefit versus the product SamuraiShodownSensei posted is that you don't have to force the drive tray out everytime you need to swap discs.

Yeah, mine is like that. That makes sense, because no other disc (besides the DVD disc - with the same pattern) does that.

Anyway, it seems to be working a little better; it's loading games pretty much fine now, but there seems to be a bit more noise than I remember, though I guess I could just be imagining that.

Crovax - That could be the problem. I'll give it a try.
